In 1880, Rebecca is convicted of murder. There is talk of witchcraft and she is committed to the Asylum. She moulds tallow and wick into two candles and hides them into the wall. In 1988 Matthew and Cathy visit the asylum and find a candle which she takes home. Cathy's personality begins to change.
The book starts with the events in Australia in the 1880's which led to the creation of the 2 tallow figures - this part kept me reasonably entertained.
In the second part, newly wed Cathy discovers one of the figures while on honeymoon in Australia...just waiting for her after all those years - imagine that! She take it back to England with her where she under goes some severe personality changes...is this down to the tallow figure? And of course the second figure is lurking nearby... I found this second part disappointing & it didn't live up to it's potential in my opinion. A passable read but not one I'd really recommend.
From the beginning of the story things got interesting. It is dark and lovely. This story does not describe things that may happen normally in life but may be summarized as justice beyond a generation in the Norman family. But the other family which became victims of another man's sin was injustice at its peak.. Good nevertheless.
