Quick & Dirty Book Review:
The first book in this delightful series, Demon Princess: Reign or Shine was a light-hearted, hilarious novel with an intriguing storyline, compelling protagonist and a whole of demon butt-kicking action. In my opinion, Demon Princess: Reign Check surpassed its predecessor. With an exciting romantic triangle and profound writing dealing with deep issues of death, choices and the consequences of our actions, Reign Check has become my favorite book within the series. Michelle Rowen has crafted a thrilling world full of demons, faeries, dragons, slayers and much, much more.

Book Opening:

"Act normal, I told myself as I pushed through the front doors of Erin Heights High School. Everything's going to be just fine.

Unfortunately that thought lasted exactly thirty seconds."

Notable Scene:

“I was either going to burst into tears or go into a rage. I hadn't decided yet. But the fury I was feeling coursed through my body, and I felt myself start to change into my Darkling form again- this time under my own power, so it didn't hurt as much.

Her eyes grew large with alarm. "What are you doing?"

Have you heard about the prophecy?" I asked her. "The one that says I just might be the one that will bring about the destruction of pretty much everything and everyone?"

She swallowed. "I thought you said there might be another Darkling it applies to."

I fisted my hands at my sides. "Maybe I was wrong." -page 230

Full Review:

Nikki Donovan is hell bent on having a regular teenage life. She's back in the human world now, having fought her demonic aunt and saved the King of the Shadowlands from an agonizing death. As Nikki adjusts back to the life of a normal high school student, things seem to be back to normal. That is until Rhys, the teenage faery king comes waltzing into school and flips her entire world upside down. Now instead of worrying about little things like those pesky demon horns popping up when she gets angry, Nikki's got to convince Rhys she's not going to destroy the world despite the latest prophecy he insists is about her. Throw in the shocker that her best friend is in training to be Buffy-the-demon-slayer and ex-boyfriend Chris is mighty suspicious about her secret demon side, everything quickly goes straight to hell. Except in Nikki's case, that's more than just an expression. As news of the prophecy begins to spread, Nikki gets called to the Underworld to face a frightening demon council. This time, it will take all her wits, a little bit of power and the magic of the boy who loves her if there's any hope of making it out of the Underworld alive.

Michelle Rowen has a way of infusing so much warmth and humor into her heroines that you can't help but root for them and immediately be on their side. Nikki is an average teenage girl, just trying to make sense of her life. She isn't perfect. She has insecurities like we all do. But she also has tremendous strength, a lot of heart, and a hilarious sense of humor that makes this series really shine. Nikki impressed me with how determined she was to help Michael from not being treated as a second-class citizen and how she put her life on the line in the Underworld to do the right thing for him, knowing full well that every moment she lingered there, she ran the risk of ending up in the same boat as he was. I also loved that despite the fact that she was terrified at times (who wouldn't be), she never fell to pieces and still managed to make light of things with some really hilarious inner monologues and witty one-liners.

The romantic triangle between Michael, Nikki and Rhys was intriguing, and added some extra tension to the book. Rhys was the complete opposite of Michael. He was moody, dangerous and downright rude to Nikki, but their interactions really intrigued me. When he opened up to her and showed some depth and sensitivity, I began to see why she would be drawn to him. Michael was extremely lovable and the type of guy every girl dreams about—brooding good looks, strong, sensitive and willing to do anything to protect the woman he loved. I think should the series continue, it will be interesting to see who Nikki ends up with. Both guys have a lot to offer in their own ways.

The Demon Princess series was a real delight to read and I truly hope that this series gets another book. There are so many open-ended story lines I would love to explore including characters like Melinda and her demon slaying activities, Kassandra, Nikki's Underworld friend (sort of), or Chris, the ex boyfriend who has an interesting "gift". I'm also fascinated by what really goes on in the faery realm and would like to learn more about its inner workings. The Underworld itself, with its ever changing scenery, frightening creatures and harsh laws was also fascinating to me. I love how Michelle Rowen has created all these different worlds instead of one set land known as "hell". It keeps things mysterious and seems even more dangerous. With so many power players, things are fated to never be peaceful for long. I'm sure whatever Rowen cooks up will keep the series rolling with her trademark brand of humor, romance and action.

If you remember, I was not too pleased with the first installment in this series but babycakes, it’s all about the sequels because I totally loved this one. Often (in particular with Richelle Mead) I find that authors usually hit their stride in the second novel in a series because by that time they are done building the world in which their story is set to occur. This means that they can focus more on the plot details rather than structure and situating the mythos. Am I making sense so far? Yeah? Good.

Anyway, as I proclaimed, I totally enjoyed this novel. It has all the elements necessary to make a girl happy. Two hot guys, well, three hot guys but one of them is deranged so we don’t count them. Wacky characters, fortune tellers and hm… a subtle undercurrent of danger. Not danger that is made explicit right away but a foreshadowing that sends shivers skittering up your spine – and that’s totally meant to sound enticing. If it doesn’t, it’s because I have had about 8 hours of sleep in two days combined.

While this book is satisfying on so many levels, what makes it successful is the fact that it leaves the reader questioning – thirsting for more. Interested and intrigued. Yeah, you get the idea.

So what’s going to happen next to our favourite Demon Princess? I don’t know. But let me tell you, I sort of can’t wait to find out.

My Thoughts: I have been on such a kick of reading Young Adult books! And amazing ones at that! In the first book Demon Princess Reign or Shine. We meet Nikki Donovan who moved to a new town two months because her mom got remarried, for the fourth time! Her father left her and her mom before she was even born. She is just trying to fit it and becomes friends with the popular girl. She snags a super cute popular guy and her life can't get any better. Until, she gets herself a bit of a stalker and finds out that her father is dying and he is demon! What does that make her? Yes, thats right, his heir to the throne and a demon princess. We get to know her stalker whose name is Michael. Michael is a shadow and basically a servant to her father. Of course Michael just so happens to catch Nikki's eye in a more than friend kind of a way and she begins to have feelings for him. She realizes things may not may as they seem and she just wants a normal life.

Now I'm done with the refresher course! In Demon Princess Reign Check, Nikki is back, even trying to be more normal than before. She is going to school, not letting her being a demon princess control her life. But than, what has to happen? Rhys, the fairy who lives in the forest aka the King Of The Fairy Side enrolls in Nikki's school. There is a new prophecy that insists Nikki is going to destroy everything and Rhys needs to know if its true so he can protect his people! Rhys and Nikki slowly become friends and he learns many secrets during his stay in the human world. He even finds out the name of his future queen through a dragon prophecy. What he does not find out is the truth behind his parent's death but one person does know. Nikki.

Nikki's mind goes back and forth between Michael and Rhys. She has feelings for them both but how can you choose between a hot shadow and a hot fairy. I myself couldn't control the lust I felt for them both. Yes, I really do like Michael, but lately I have found myself falling more in love with fairies and Rowen throws a super cute super charming magical fairy into this book who just took my breathe away.

Does Nikki find out if the stories about her are true? Does she make any more friends along the way to take her side in a fight? What about Melinda, her demon slaying friend? What happens to Michael and Rhys?

Overall: I loved this book! This series rocks and I can't wait to read more! I hope there is going to be another book.

Cover: Love it! I think that is Michael on the cover? He's a cutie! Now I wonder what Rhys looks like. Love the pink cover and the horns on her head.

What happens when you combine faeries, demons, the shadow lands and a wicked scary prophecy? You get Nikki Donovan and her non-stop adventures of navigating life as a high school student while also being a demon princess.

With Demon Princess: Reign Check, Michelle Rowen continues her fabulous skills at keeping us glued to our books as we delve deeper into Nikki's role as a demon Princess and all of it's perks and downfalls.

Demon Princess: Reign Check continues shortly after Demon Princess: Reign or Shine ended. with Nikki and her mom (who is single again) maintaining their lives in the same manner, except that Nikki is really a demon Princess. It's a fact that she must keep secret from everyone, but she isn't the only one hiding some pertinent life-altering information. Yet, while trying her best to keep both her existence in both worlds in harmonious balance she receives some disturbing news that put her very existence in great peril. How is a girl supposed to enjoy being sixteen when everything around her is going demonically twisted?

I am so glad that that Michelle Rowen kept up with the adventure and humor factor from the series predecessor. I enjoyed reading about Nikki and her new adventures adjusting to life as a demon princess and thought the deeper world building a great asset to the storyline. I am a sucker for romance and Nikki and her share with her forbidden attachment to Michael and the inescapable attraction to Rhys, the young faery king. I am also a fan of the mystery involving both boys and how it all plays out...yummy.

The only thing that I had issues with is Nikki's BFF, Melinda and her storyline. I wanted a little bit more...and hopefully that will be explored in the next installment. Also, I would have preferred a bit more of a surprise but that was impossible because the story synopsis that basically spilled the proverbial beans with all the information given on the back cover. BOOOO!!! Why do publishers do that? It's not like I did not have an inkling to what might be happening but I would have liked to find out on my own terms.

Demon Princess: Reign Check is a fantastic summer read that will give you just the right amount of paranormal romance and demonic adventure.

★★★★☆ I loved it

I need to start off with saying, I can't believe that there may not be any more books to this series!! Please correct me if I'm wrong because I'll be so excited if I am. There is so much more left to explore in Nikki's world and I really, really don't want it to be over. It finished so open-ended, I want more now! Ok, time to calm down now. I hope I made my point clear. :D As you can probably tell by now I loved Reign Check. I may even dare to say that I liked it more that Reign or Shine. Only slightly more though because I loved that one too.

Nikki is so lovable and so are her boys. Even her daddy, the King of the Shadowlands, is too. She's thrown into a crazy world with extremely different rules and different people (creatures?). All things considered she does really well dealing with everything that is thrown at her and all the crazy rules of the demon world. I don't know who I like better out of her two boys, Michael the Shadow or Rhys the Faery King. I love the awkward situations Nikki finds herself in with them. Also, more is being revealed about those around Nikki and she finds out that they are more intertwined in her future than she thought.

I read almost the entire novel with a smile on my face. Michelle really knows how to do humour. The only times the smile slipped is when things weren't going so well for our heroine. There's plenty of obstacles for her to overcome and things don't always go so well. I won't give anything away in case you haven't read the first book yet. I strongly recommend this series to paranormal YA lovers. It's not too heavy, there's heaps of funny moments and you'll find yourself on the edge of your seat with what might happen next.

Cover: I like the one with the heart better but this one is much better than the one with the couple and the pink background. Also this suites the first cover to make the series look good.

After saving her father from death, Nikki gets to return to her almost-normal-life in Ontario, Canada. Peace won’t last more than a week end though, because Rhys, the faery king, enrolled in her high school to study the possibility of Nikki being a treat to his people. Everyone, demons and faeries alike are determined to shed the light on a prophecy saying Nikki will destroy them all, or end the princess’ life to prevent it.

I’ll start by saying that if you liked the first book, you will also like Reign Check. The tone of the story is as light as the first one, and you also get a fair share of teenage romance. I have to say that some themed addressed in this round were potentially more profound (death, laws, consequences), yet the story felt one-dimensional. If I had one critique for that book, I would’ve asked for more depth, but maybe it’s because I’m an adult reading a YA story.

That being said, I like that Nikki is trying to take in stride whatever is thrown at her, but she don’t always succeed and sometimes gets her foot in her mouth. It made her more real, and her insecurities sure added to that. Michael (Nikki’s servant/boyfriend) is as lovely as ever and I was happy to see him again. His forbidden relation with the Demon Princess is quite adorable and we get to discover more about Shadows’ abilities. If there is a third book, I would love to get to know them more, along with faeries abilities because we don’t know much about them either. They can use swords, cast glamour but I’m sure there is more than that. I also became quite fond of Rhys in this book and was kinda sad because he pretty much disappeared in the last 120 pages or so, of the book.

I liked the end, but I find myself longing for more. The sum of the two first books happens in a two weeks period, which doesn’t leave room for much growth and I honestly want to know more about this compelling world.

Young adult lovers looking for a light tone cute story will be pleased with this series.

After finishing the first novel in the series, Reign or Shine, I've been really looking forward to reading this one. Picking up almost immediately after Reign or Shine ended, Reign Check was another exciting and well done addition to the series.

To begin with, readers got to know Nikki even better, and she really matured in this book. I could understand her actions more and she was an overall more believable and likable character. I like Nikki's personality and it makes her narration way more enjoyable. Her witty and sarcastic remarks, along with her take charge attitude are all great. Again, Michael remained one of my favorite characters in Reign Check. Readers were able to learn more about his background and about Shadows in general. Rhys also played a large role in this book and I really liked him because of how much more I got to know him. There was a hint of a love triangle that will leave readers wondering who's better for Nikki and who she's meant to be with- Michael or Rhys?

The "bad" characters were revisited in Reign Check, especially Elizabeth and Keiran. I loved all the new plot twists involving the Underworld. I'd been wanting to know more about Keiran and the Underworld since reading book one, and now I finally got the chance. The Underworld contained some awful characters, but also some new favorites as well.

There was a ton of awesome action in this novel, that along with all the exciting plot twists, made this an overall really exciting read that had me anxiously turning pages. You never knew who was going to attack who next!

Learning about the other "species" like Shadows and hellhounds was an interesting side, and I really liked how all the sub-plots tied together. The dragon oracles, friends-turned-demon-slayers, prophesies, and more all made this novel exciting and interesting and even better than the first. I can't wait to see where Michelle Rowen takes Nikki and her friends next!

Overall: 4 out of 5 stars

After all the surprises in Demon Princess: Reign or Shine, Nikki Donovan I still trying to get used to being a Demon Princess. She’s attending school now and while things are going okay, Jason is still acting weird and worse yet, a new boy has captured everyone attention. But this new boy is none other than Rhys, the king of the faery realm who also happens to be in her class. And then of course, Michael shows up, she meets the Queen whose brother wanted to kill her father, and things get a little more complicated.

I loved this book just as much as I loved the first book. While these books are about demons, they aren’t all dark and gory but fun and light. There’s humor and romance and some danger along the way, but then again, I did say it was demons!

The plot evolved more in this book from the first which saw to the development of the characters and exactly what’s going on with Nikki and her father. While she meets some unexpected people, like her aunt and her lover (who still wants something from her), Nikki finds out more about herself and who she is. She becomes stronger and more controlling of her powers.

I loved the twists and turns and secrets in this story even though the summary pretty much gives it away. There were some surprises and twists that do get you. Such as Jason’s secret.

I love the fun attitude this series takes on. The first book DEMON PRINCESS was one of my favorite reads in the past, and REIGN CHECK didn't disappoint at all. Highly recommended for 7th grade and up fans of paranormal or fantasy and anyone who loves great humor and a fun story.

Quick read involving oracles, forbidden love, and a demon princess that won't settle. Cute, and even better than the previous book. In this novel, Nikki spends less time wondering at the new world she's fallen into, and more time getting things done. Mostly.

Nikki Donovan is a Darkling - half-demon and half-human. When Rhys, the Faery King, shows up at her high school and tells her that a dragon oracle has prophesied that she will destroy the Shadowlands and the Underworld, she vows to prove the prophecy wrong. Her visit for a second opinion from another dragon oracle only muddies the waters. Nikki is summoned to the Demon Council by Queen Sephina. When she is attacked by a hellhound by the orders of Prince Kieran, Michael, her Shadow servant saves her and is condemned to death. Princess Kassandra hatches a plan to save Michael who learns about what a Shadow can really do. No doubt there is a sequel in the works. This book was ok but was as much a teen romance as it was a fantasy.

This is the second book in the Demon Princess series by Michelle Rowen. I absolutely loved the first book Reign or Shine and this book was just as good. It is a fun read with a well developed world and a lead character who is believable.

Nikki has returned to school after saving her father (King of the Shadowlands) from assassination from her Aunt. She just wants things to be normal; well as normal as they can be with her Darkling (Half-demon) powers and a Shadow (Michael) for a boyfriend. But alas her life is not meant to be simple. There is a new student at school and he is no other than Rhys, the King of the Fairy Realm who tried to kill her in the first book. Then Nikki finds out that there is a prophecy saying that she will destroy all of the Netherworlds. Between trying to control her Darkling powers, trying to convince the Queen of the Underworld that she is harmless, dodging Rhys, trying to find time to spend with Michael, finding out that her best friend is a demon slayer, and hunting down a dragon to confirm the prophecy...when will Nikki ever have time to get her homework done?

This is a great book. Everything about it is just spot on. The characters are wonderful. The politics about Shadow rights are interesting. Nikki learning to control her powers is interesting as well and I loved learning more about this multi-faceted world. Nikki and Michael, as well as Nikki and Rhys, all have great chemistry and the tension between them all is delicious. Rowen does an excellent job balancing action, a great world, politics, teenage elements, and romance elements. The story is non-stop, never gets boring and is very engaging.

I loved learning more about the Underworld and Hell and also learning more about Rhys and about the Shadow race. The whole idea of Nikki having a horrible prophecy looming over her and having to prove whether or not it is accurate was great too. There are quite a few laughs in this book so things never get too serious. All in all it is a light-hearted read that deals with some serious issues. I love how balanced Nikki is and how well she is doing with coping with all of the things going on in her life. Rowen is an organized writer whose writing is easy and natural to read; I really enjoyed it.

My only complaint would be that we don't get to see very much of Darkling Nikki in this book or watch her kick much butt. Still the story was very well done and wrapped up nicely, while leaving enough things hanging that I really want to read the next book. I would recommend this for Vampire Academy fans or Blue Bloods fans that want something that's creative and bit more lighthearted.

Overall I highly recommend this book. It is an excellent young adult series that is fun, very well done, features a great new world, and has an admirable heroine. I am desperately waiting to read the next book in this series and seriously considering checking out Rowen's adult series as well.

Review brought to you by OBS staff member Dawn

Nikki is one of my favorite YA characters. She’s surprisingly mature, unafraid to speak her mind.
Case in point: when her father wants to see her, she confronts him about keeping his promise to set Michael free.

Middle books in series tend to suck, but this one is the exception. There’s a lot of action and problems coming at Nikki from all directions. The second book has several intricate plots going on with Michael, Rhys, Melinda (the demon slayer), Chris, Kieran …but it’s not so busy that you can’t follow. Nikki approaches each situation with a refreshing honesty and strong will to do what is right.

It’s hard to get a read on Rhys. He seems to care for Nikki but also pushes her away. He encourages Nikki to seek a second opinion on the prophecy. While Irena is unable to confirm or deny the prophecy, she sees that Nikki is in danger. Irena is able to tell Rhys that Nikki is not a danger to him because she is pure of heart. BUT….Rhys finds out his betrothed is Nikki which is not exactly welcome news. Nikki is hysterically horrified and I’m not sure what to think.

My heart broke for Melinda and Michael when they saw Nikki and Rhys kissing under the mistletoe but later Rhys is able to explain it away. He promptly asks Melinda out.

Whoa! I was shocked when Chris turned out to be Irena’s child. Chris must have inherited some of her abilities because he gives Nikki a drawing of herself in full Darkling form in the Shadowlands. I did not see that one coming but it’s a great plot twist.

When the council wants to see Nikki she chooses to go against her father and Rhys’ wishes. I felt like a proud parent as she made her choice to protect her loved ones. Kassandra (Kieran’s sister) and Nikki strike up an unlikely friendship. When Michael gets thrown in the dungeon for using his powers, Kassandra helps get him out. But, in the process, Nikki finds out a shadow (Jones who was a friend of Micheal’s father) killed Rhys’ parents. It freaked me out that a shadow can kill those they serve. Could Michael be hiding his true motives???

Nikki struggles with controlling her emotions which in turn control her Darkling form. She deals with a great deal of adversity in the second installment but she continues to handle everything with a maturity way beyond her years.

I can’t wait to read the final book in the series. Will Nikki stay with Michael or end up with Rhys? Will Melinda figure out Nikki is a demon? What does Kieran have up his sleeve?

Reviewed on Lili Lost in a Book

"A week ago. I was a normal, boring teenager.

Then I met my father for the first time and found out he was a demon. And not just any demon: he was also the king of another dimension, called the Shadowlands.

Which made me a princess--a demon princess.

So very not normal."
-Nikki

After saving her dad and his kingdom, Nikki goes back to the human world, knowing that the Shadowlands are now safe once again. What Nikki doesn't expect is to find the faerie king, Rhys, enrolled in her high school... all because of a prophecy. Said prophecy states that Nikki will be the destroyer of worlds. Kind of hard to believe, right? The demon council are nervous about this prophecy and ask Nikki to come to the Underwolrd just for a "chat." They want to see what this demon princess is really about, and see if she is really capable of destroying worlds. Her trip down to the Underworld takes a nasty turn when her life is put in danger and Michael does something crazy that lands him in trouble.

Annoying faerie kings, crazy prophecies, nerve-wracking trips to the underworld, and a forbidden love with a Shadow... how is Nikki supposed to deal with all this while at the same time trying to control her newly found demon powers??

I am seriously enjoying this series! It's so much fun to read, with a whole ton of action and crazy turns that will leave you speechless and break your heart. I ADORE Michael and I just cannot get enough of him! And then there's Rhys... I don't absolutely dislike him, but I'm really hating the feel of the beginning of a love triangle! I really, really, dislike love triangles -_-

Another thing is the deal with Melinda. There was some foreshadowing in the last book that was glaringly obvious to me, and this book just confirmed my suspicions about her. But it took Nikki almost half of this book to put two and two together, when I saw things come from a mile away... or in this case, from a whole book away. It's very disappointing that this series is so predictable because, as I said, I like being surprised.

However, some very shocking things happened when Michael and Nikki went down to the Underworld, and I think that made up a little bit for the whole predictable Melinda thing. This book definitely kept me hooked, especially when they were in the Underworld and things were just very tense.

This book, like the last, kept me hooked and wanting more of Nikki and Michael. I really love this story, the new magical creatures we came across, and just the whole world Michelle has created!

I think after having such a rough time with Reign or Shine, I was just not motivated to read this one. Though, I do have to say this one impressed me.

Remember that my one major issue with Reign or Shine was our Shadow/Prince/Servant/Thing, Michael. Well, he actually showed he had a backbone in this book! Again, he was kind of stupid (even he admits to it), but he was an idiot with a backbone. I mean, I guess I'd be a bit of a twit if I was stuck in a castle all my life.

So, yeah, respect for Michael went up a bit. Yay.

In this book, there were a lot more things going on (all of which are spoilers, so it's on the hush-hush), unlike in the first book where it was, more or less, Nikki getting used to her demonic self.

In Reign Check, there is a love-triangle introduced, the new addition being none other than King Rhys Oberon. Rhys was told by his advisors to go and keep watch on Nikki to make sure she isn't a threat to Faeryland. In doing so, he wreaks havoc on Erin Heights High...Only, not really. He was fairly harmless.

Rhys was by far my favorite character in the book. He was witty, sarcastic, and not a freaking moron. Not to mention he is super sexy. Sorry, Michael, but I do not like guys who sport shoulder-length, black hair.

Then, of course, there was Nikki. I will admit, the whole "I miss Michael" thing was getting quite irritating, but I have learned to accept that trait in the Young Adult community. I will also let it go because she still maintained her strong character. She rational, unlike a lot of heroines these days. Thank you, Nikki, for being smart.

The one problem I had with this is that is was, again, so horribly predictable. I was guessing on some of my predictions, and they all wound up happening. Like, really?

I'm surprised I liked this book as much as I did, with all the facepalms I got from the first book. I am left giving this book and 4/5 stars.

Note: There's seriously two more books coming out in this series? Kill me!

I really hope that sales of Reign Check are encouraging to Walker Books because I'm not done with Nikki Donovan, Demon Princess. This series is crying out for resolution. I guess it doesn't help that I read both Reign or Shine and Reign Check back-to-back. Rowen continues to deftly balance witty banter and dark events in a real page turner. I dearly love how sassy Rowen's heroines are and how they always rise to the occasion despite the odds being stacked against them.

Reign Check begins a week after Reign or Shine ends. Nikki has accepted the fact that she is a Darkling, is working to keep her powers under control, and enjoys her clandestine, forbidden relationship with Shadow boyfriend Michael. Suddenly, she discovers that the new boy in school -- BFF Melinda's new crush and Nikki's new biology partner -- is none other than Rhys, the 16-year-old Faery King, and he informs her that a new prophecy has been revealed about Nikki. After visiting her father, Nikki discovers that the prophecy states that the first Darkling born in 1,000 years will destroy everyone, and the Demon Council is sure it pertains to Nikki. As if being constantly scrutinized by the Faery King and having to appear at the Demon Council in the Underworld Castle weren't bad enough, Nikki discovers that BFF Melinda and Nikki's recent Winter Formal date Chris may be dangerous foes. Not knowing who are her true friends and who are her enemies and the twists and turns that occur on the way to discovering the truth behind the prophecy may destroy Nikki if she's not careful.

Lots of unexpected character reveals and plot twists make this novel an exciting page turner. Now, Walker Books, how about letting Rowen's readers and characters get the resolution novel they deserve!

My daughter had received this as a review copy. I borrowed it from her shelf. This is definitely a YA novel, but it has enough depth to the main characters to keep an older reader involved.

It was just one week since sixteen year old Nikki had found out that she was a demon and that her father is the demon king of the Shadowlands. This means that Nikki is a princess. Not the kind of pressure that a high school girl needs. Thankfully she has a wonderful friend Melinda at her side. To complicate matters, Rhys, the king of the Faery realm, has just enrolled at her school. Even though she already has a boyfriend, who lives in her father's kingdom, Nikki is oddly attracted to Rhys yet loathes him at the same time.

I enjoyed this story from the first pages. I didn't feel confused by not having read the first book in the series: Demon Princess: Reign or Shine, though I do want to go and purchase it for my daughter (I won't be allowed to read it until she has done so). Nikki and Melinda come across as true friends. Melinda is part of the 'in' crowd, but she doesn't dump Nikki when urged to do so by the rest of that crowd. All the interaction between Rhys and Nikki comes with double meanings. While they know that each of them live in two different worlds, no one else at the school does. What a challenge to keep stories straight for them.

I am not sure that I trust Michael, the boyfriend from the Shadowlands. He's a shadow and we don't really learn much about them. He is also distrustful of Rhys's intentions and keeps an eye on him. yes, jealousy even in the otherworld. At this time I am leaning toward Team Rhys.

A number of questions are answered by the close of this book, but there a few biggies left dangling. There must be a third book in the works.

Nikki Donovan, reluctant royalty of the demonic Shadowlands, is back for her second book -- and what a book it is! This is a series that is thought-provoking, plot-driven, and filled with world-building goodies that keep the pages turning. Accessible to younger readers but carrying darker themes that will still resonate with adults, Reign Check is high-quality.

When the king of the faery realm shows up at Nikki's (very human) high-school to spy on her and her half-demon motives, her life becomes even more complicated than it did a week before, when she learned of her supernatural abilities. The leaders of the Underworld have been made aware of a prophesy regarding Nikki -- one that claims she will destroy all of demonkind and that sets the powerful demons at odds with her. Only by personally visiting the Underworld and negotiating with them can she keep her family -- and herself -- safe from their paranoia, but some things are easier said than done...

"Top-notch fantasy" defines Reign Check-- that it's appropriate for young adult readers certainly should not dissuade adults from devouring this demonically fun series. The romance is as good as any in non-young adult; it's kept PG, but certainly doesn't suffer for it. Michelle Rowen manages to infuse her characters with such a wide range of emotions that it's easy to forget that they are still in high school.

Her books lead naturally into one another, and each is a thousand times more meaningful as part of a whole rather than stand-alone, but it is possible for a reader to start with Reign Check rather than Reign or Shine.

Five stars - this one rocks.

Nikki Donovan was a demon princess. Now she's a demon princess in love.

Fresh from finding out she is a demon princess and meeting her father for the first time, Nikki Donovan is looking forward to getting back to her regular high school life. But then Rhys, the handsome teenage king of the faery realm, enrolls at her school as a "foreign exchange student." Her conflicted feelings for Rhys and her boyfriend are getting in the way of her new relationship with the Shadow-creature Michael. But this love triangle from hell isn't even Nikki's biggest problem: There's a new prophecy that claims she will destroy all the demon and human worlds. Her best friend Melinda just might be a demon-slayer-in-training. Throw in a field trip to none other than the Underworld itself . . . and Nikki's going to be hoping for a rain check on more than just her homework!

The Demon Princess series is light, fun and a great escape. I read Reign Check last year, but needed a refresher when we received an ARC of Reign Fall (book 3) from Michelle Rowen. Reign Check was just as fun the second time around. The snarkiness between Nikki and Rhys is often hilarious. Nikki herself reminds me of a young Stephanie Plum, you know, if Stephanie were a demon princess.

If you are looking for something interesting, fun and completely endearing, then Reign Check is the book for you! The third book in the series, Reign Fall is available as a self-published ebook available from Kindle and Smashwords.
