Eiichiro Oda (尾田栄一郎, Oda Eiichirō) is a Japanese manga artist, best known as the creator of the manga and anime One Piece.
As a child, Oda was inspired by Akira Toriyama's works and aspired to become a manga artist. He recalls that his interest in pirates was probably sparked by the popular TV animation series titled Vicky the Viking. He submitted a character named Pandaman for Yudetamago's classic wrestling manga Kinnikuman. Pandaman was not only used in a chapter of the manga but would later return as a recurring cameo character in Oda's own works.

Wanted is an anthology of shorts created by Oda before One Piece became the phenomenon that it is today. Oda’s storytelling prowess and art style is clearly blossoming here as much of the presentation is echoed in his later work. The characters are akin to personalities we find in his most famous body of work, but it is nice to explore how they may have come about, and to see other genres explored. There are also notes made by the creator after each story, giving an insight into the creative process. This is well worth a read for fans and casual enjoyers.

Even in these early drafts you can see Eiichiro Oda's budding talent and skill. They're all pretty good to some extent or another - and the second story is genuinely excellent, four stars. The last one's a bit rougher than the rest, though: it's one of the two proto-One Pieces, and perhaps compares particularly poorly with the final work.
Before he created his masterpiece, One Piece, which turns twenty-eight this year, like many manga artists, Eiichiro Oda had produced a series of one-shots before jumping into the long-running format where they are able to showcase their art-styles. Considering that One Piece is a few pieces of media in which you feel every idea that the author had in their entire life injected into this one story where every island feels its own genre, reading these initial short stories showed that Oda was experimenting with different genres.
The first of these stories is “WANTED!”, Oda’s spin on the American Old West, in which Gill Bastar is pursued by bounty hunters, including Wild Joe, who got gunned down by Gill, only to come back as a ghost to haunt him. With the exception of the witty if antagonistic banter between Gill and Joe, the storytelling is rather loose and more about the kinetic energy that Oda brings to a gun fight, mixing action with his brand of cartoonish humour.
Oda improves his game with the next story “Future Present from God”, where the pickpocket Branco becomes the target of God himself, which leads to the pickpocket being forced to rectify that God made by saving a bunch of people from a building that is about to be destroyed by a meteorite. Like the previous story, the banter between the two flawed protagonists is a big driving force and whilst Oda isn’t trying to make a big statement about religion, he is having fun writing God as an almighty buffoon. However, what makes this a step-up of how Oda leans hard on the humorous side, from the exaggerating expressions from his characters to the pacing of the outlandish situation.
The next storyline “Ikki Yako” takes a more sombre tone where the wandering monk Guko arrives at a village where he is welcomed with open arms, only with the hope that he would vanquish a ghostly monster known as a “man-eater”. This is perhaps the weakest of the bunch, as there isn’t much comedy, though there is the attempt of a dramatic arc with Guko ridding of his cowardice to face this threat. If anything, it feels like a precursor for Oda’s next story that is far more successful.
“Monsters” focuses on Ryuma, a wandering samurai who finds himself in a sticky situation where he provokes someone who summons a dragon that will bring destruction to the town. It is here where you see Oda developing a number of ideas that you would associate with One Piece, from a tragic backstory, the author’s unique way of illustrating a sword fight, to even a double-page spread visualising an attack in the most satisfying way. And for One Piece fans, they will enjoy who Ryuma was before his fate as revealed in the Thriller Bark arc.
Last, but not least, “Romance Dawn” – the pilot chapter for what would become One Piece – where Monkey D. Luffy saves a girl and her best friend, Balloon the Roc, from the vicious pirate Spiel the Hexagon. Although there are notable differences between this and One Piece, Oda nailed what he is going to do with his magnum opus, with Luffy being exactly as he is, a rubber boy who may not be the brightest, but his ambition and adventurous nature is just contagious. Even Oda’s art by this point nails that bounciness that would define the look of One Piece.
At the end of each one-shot, Eiichiro Oda would give some insight and witty remark about their development, showing he has always had a sense of humour, which cements what this collection is about, whilst also being a precursor for the author to create one of the greatest pieces of fiction. Go read this, but definitely read One Piece!
This is kind of cool to see what made One Piece, One Piece. You can see the similarities and the differents form then to now. It was very cool to read theses mini stories.
Pretty interesting that each subsequent short story showed how Oda developed himself as a storyteller, especially at such a young age. You really got the feel of his evolution to coming up with a story as grand and epic as One Piece. It’s especially fun that Oda even canonized one of the short stories as part of One Piece.
Collection of short stories Goda-sensei created, before his Magnum Opus "One Piece".
In the first story you can even tell from the artwork and drawing style, that it's one of his earlier work, it's not as clean and refined. The faces are often contorted to the extreme which makes their expressions/mimic really fun to look!
The last of these stories is one of the two "Romance Dawn" stories, which both were kind of prototype versions of the eponymous first arc in One Piece. It's really fun to see what things stayed the same and what didn't! The narrative is arguably worse then the real thing as everything's crammed into one chapter, but it's nevertheless all the more inspiring to see the improvement and how even the greatest of mangakas started small.
All in all, the stories are quite witty and quick to read through, but also lighthearted and as they're brief they're not as intricate as one may be used to for Oda's most famous masterpiece. I like how each one - while being a shonen-type story - has it's own distinct flavor and setting (one story is even a mix of different settings).
Now that I've read 78 books of One Piece, I tried this out of curiosity. Well, this was very funny and loved the art even it was very rough yet. Even Dragon Ball is quite visibly inspired these, I can clearly see Eiichiro Oda has his own style already in here. It was interesting to see how Luffy and his world came alive here. Funny stories and lively drawings.
5. Romance Dawn Cerita terakhir. Awal mula One Piece *mungkin*.
Menarik sih semua ceritanya. Pantas aja banyak yang suka karya Oda-sensei. Mungkin kalau One Piece dicetak ulang lagi, bakal koleksi ^_^v
A collection of five early manga one-shots from One Piece author Eiichiro Oda, including the titular Wanted! cowboy manga short which earned him his first accolades. All of the stories here are fun and very readable, it's impressive how fully formed his style is even this early on (the earliest of these stories was drawn when he was 17) with plenty of the fast-paced action and comedy that would permeate his later work.
Wanted! is the earliest story and probably the least distinctive in terms of character design, but it's a fun romp with some great set pieces and some decent slapstick comedy. The influence of Dragon Ball author Akira Toriyama is very evident, even more so in the second short Future Present From God which is a more absurdist comedic tale similar in tone and style to Toriyama's Dr Slump. The third short Ikki Yakko is possibly the weakest here but is still a solid supernatural actioner, whilst the fourth - Monster - is a samurai fantasy with much more distinctive character design and art. This one is more in the style of his most famous work and obviously stuck in Oda's mind considering he would later call back to it in the Thriller Bark and Punk Hazard arcs of One Piece itself.
The final short, Romance Dawn, is a pirate story and direct precursor to One Piece - even featuring a pretty much fully formed Monkey D Luffy (complete with gum gum powers and straw hat) and characters very reminiscent of ones that would later appear in One Piece proper. This is an interesting glimpse of a version that never made it, with some different concepts but a very consistent style and tone to the version we did get and it's a fun read in its own right.
Over all a good selection of short stories showing Oda's development as a writer and artist. It's surprising how consistent his style is even early on and his eye for action, comedy and drama is evident throughout. These stories are more than mere curios, they are all enjoyable reads with solid concepts that could easily be spun out into longer series, well worth a look.
A big old anthology of all the master's mishaps before he hit it BIG with his most iconic work, with one of them being the 2nd prototype of what would become "One Piece."
His cowboy & samurai stories worked in showing how some of his crazier ideas would become mainstays in his main work. The one about a proto-Death Note tho? In retrospect that seemed like what would happen is "Death Note" was written by Akira Toriyama, lots of gags & the seriousness of the situation mitigated by hijinks.
Apparently episode 901 of the One Piece anime is an homage to this one shot of Luffy fighting a magic man with a weird face and his origin story's pivotal role model shifting from Shanks to Garp. Imagine right? Garp being a pirate...RIDICULOUS!
Baca ulang. Dulu awal baca sekitar tahun 2010, namun yang diingat ternyata Romance Dawn (cikal bakal One Piece) sama kisah Ryuma. Haha.
Nothing in here makes the same impact as One Piece, except a couple of the twists in “Monsters”. “God’s Gift for the Future” feels like a (much more comedic) inspiration for Deathnote. Overall worth reading for a fan of Oda. Not sure why it hasn’t released in English.
3 stars most of the way through. I skimmed monsters as I’ve seen the anime adaptation but rating bumped up to 4 for the last chapter which is the other other romance dawn I had never seen before.
