Not at all what I expected but I really enjoyed it. I'm familiar with other books written by Mary Monica under the name of Monica Ferris. It is a cozy needlework series and is a lot of fun to read. One year when she was at Magna Cum Murder in Muncie, Indiana we were able to talk to her and she recommended the Peter Brichter series which she wrote (I think there are 4 books) and so I bought them all. Heaven knows how long ago that's been but I have finally just gotten around to reading the first one. This is certainly not a cozy read...as fair warning, some animals die, so if you're not up for that don't read this one. However, once I got over the shock of the content I discovered that I really enjoyed this intelligent mystery. I'm ready...at long last...to move on to the next in the series.

Peter Brichter is a skilled detective with the Charter, Illinois, police, but is unpopular with his colleagues because of his abrasive personality. Now part of an organized crime unit, he has some strong incentives to change his ways. He genuinely likes his boss, and he has met a young woman---Kori Price--- that he really wants to impress. Peter has a lot on the line both professionally and personally as he investigates Kori's guardian, gangster Nick Tellios.

This mystery was first published back in 1988 and is available to a new generation of readers via Kindle. I enjoyed following the interesting characters in the novel, especially Peter and Kori.

Good read

A story with good detective/police interaction and a fast-food ending. Moved right along with no dead spots. Would definitely recommend.

I found this book free on my Kindle. After the last free book I read, I wasn't expecting much... but I enjoyed this story (even if I knew the 'who-dun-it right away....just not all of the who-dun-it.)

It is the story of a small underfunded Organized Crime Unit that stumbles upon a serious operation. Det. Brichter, a smart-aleck know-it-all with little patience, but who makes an excellent rock-solid detective, sifts through the facts and people to uncover a rapidly worsening plot and learn some things about his own inter-personal skills in the meantime.

I enjoyed the banter between the detectives and found myself liking the main character, Det. Brichter. I'm not sure I love the woman he falls for in this novel,.. but if she is in others, she might grow on me. It was an easy, entertaining read.

Unfortunately, this book only earns a weak 3 stars from me. I like the characters well enough, but there were several things that didn't work so well for me.

First off, it wasn't much of a mystery. It had so many scenes from the bad guys' POVs that what should have been mysterious was blatantly obvious.

Then the POV generally shifts too much and at times is a little unstable (shifts suddenly when there isn't a clear scene shift... things written that shouldn't be known by the person whose POV it had been).

I am also surprised to see this book had been published as a mass market paperback. It needs an awful lot of polish.

I do want to note that I read the second book in the series first and it was MUCH better. So perhaps part of the issue here is a writing learning the craft.

I thought this book was amazing. It made you think and kept you guessing, not necessarily whodunnit, but what would come next?! This is the FIRST book in this series, not the second which seems to be a common mistake online. This is where Peter (the main character) meets Kori, the Murder at the War book is definitely set after the events in this book have already taken place. Keep that in mind.
