In ways of quick historical accounts this is a wonderful book. It puts forth within just 215 pages, the many voyages, exploits, and battles through which the Spanish gained control of the new land of Central America without making it seem rushed in any way. Exhaustive in its accounts from Columbus' upbringing to the conquest of Peru, the author introduces you not only to the men themselves but to their characters and personalities and explains not only the battles and conquests but the politics behind them.

A little dry and tedious. Several passages pack a punch and make this a worthwhile read. The bloody in-flighting among the Peruvian conquers was disapointing. The execution of Atahaualpa was sickening. The description of human sacrifice among the Aztec was shocking, but not supprising. The quantities of gold and silver absolutely unbelievable: Atahaualpa was perfectly willing to provide gold and silver for his ransom, because he prefered glass.

Page 181 give a precise and succinct justification for the Spanish catholics to take over the continent in the name of the King...and no it is exactly what one would expect!
