Ah, the things I'll do to up my Avalon/Battlestar Galactica game - like study an entire textbook to learn how to more effectively scam my friends into thinking that I'm always on their team. ;)

Jokes aside however, I'm actually not sure how this book got onto my list. It's an interesting read, especially if you're a) a police investigator or b) someone planning to commit some kind of heinous crime. I'm neither of these things, obviously. But after going through the list of tricks a police interrogator can use to manipula- sorry, I mean, to uncover the truth - in an interview or interrogation, I can safely say that someone finding themselves in this situation should:

1) Invoke their Miranda rights; and
2) Keep their damn mouth shut at all costs.

It's amazing to read all the things an investigator can do to increase their likelihood of obtaining a confession - everything from carefully reading your body language, to setting up the furniture in the interview room, to deliberately shifting moral culpability to a victim ('she was asking for it by wearing that, you couldn't help yourself, you're not to blame' - I found this one really disturbing), to not putting a ________ at the end of the written confession just in case the suspect refuses to sign at the last minute, removing all reference to the consequences of admitting criminal activity, shifting their chair imperceptibly closer while they speak... the list is endless.

It's also interesting to see how the instructors tread a fine line between trick- sorry, I mean, 'setting up the right psychological environment' to obtain a confession that can be submitted as evidence - and behaving in an ethical manner. Sometimes it seems like this line is drawn arbitrarily. For example, the investigator is encouraged to refer to non-existent evidence when talking to a suspect, or to bring in an evidence folder filled with blank paper, to give the impression that the conviction is a done deal. But they're not allowed to bring in 'hard' fabricated evidence, like a made-up report or DNA test results. They do also caution the reader that interrogations performed on minors or the mentally unwell can result in false confessions, so that's nice I guess.

Anyway, this book is an interesting peek into a slice of society that I hopefully will never have to witness.

Text book style, not the easiest free flowing to read but jam packed full of good information for any criminal investigator. This book should be read by any new detective learning about interviewing a subject. After all that’s one of the most important skills of an investigator.

A fairly comprehensive detail of John Reids investigative and passive interrogation techniques.
It may seem tedious to some, but Reid proved that an Investigator has to invest time in a suspect in order to extract a confession, usually in baby steps fashion.

It's kinda scary how much people can be manipulated by some simple techniques. Moral: innocent or guilty, just don't answer any questions from the police.
