Do Something!: A Handbook for Young Activists

Rate this book
Kids want to do it. Parents want their kids to do it. Schools often require kids to do it. So do Do something and change the world.  And here’s how, in a fist-in-the-air book for every young activist.

DoSomething.org knows exactly how to reach kids. The largest Internet-based teen service organization, it supports 750,000 projects, receiving 15 million visitors a month, and, for the first time ever, broadcasting a Do Something Awards show on VH1.

Do Something! takes aim at the next generation of do-gooders. Written in a lively, in-your-face style, designed to be edgy and hip, it’s the kind of interactive, educational book every parent will feel good about giving because it shows kids how to get involved, in language they understand.

It’s an idea-to-execution guide. Quizzes help readers pinpoint their “thing”―a cause that fires them up. Then come the tools that show how to get something done, whether it’s making a poster, raising money, sending around a petition, or enlisting friends.

There are 33 action plans, touching on areas such as the environment, human rights, poverty, animal welfare, education, disaster relief―plus worksheets, facts, and outlines to help socially conscious kids create their own projects, and, for inspiration, profiles of DoSomething.org grant winners. Additionally, DoSomething.org is setting up a separate website for this book’s readers.

About DoSomething.org is one of the largest organizations in the US that helps young people rock causes they care about. A driving force in creating a culture of volunteerism, DoSomething.org is on track to activate two million young people in 2011. By leveraging the web, television, mobile, and pop culture, DoSomething.org inspires, empowers and celebrates a generation of   teenagers who recognize the need to do something, believe in their ability to get it done, and then take action.  Plug in at www.DoSomething.org.

This handbook is a great tool to get students thinking about how they can help change the world in which we live. We can read about different issues, but what can we DO about them? This handbook encourages young people to think about what causes they feel passionate about, and gives them some ideas for getting started with their activism. I really like that the book includes “The Super-Fast Find-Your-Thing Quiz” at the beginning to help students figure out what causes they are passionate about. Students will realize that they don’t have to get involved with every issue; but if they find one that resonates with them they will be more likely to make a difference and enjoy their work. The book is well organized. After the quiz, the different issues are separated into sections. Every section contains ideas of actions children can take toward bettering their cause. For example, under the category, animal welfare, one idea is to volunteer to walk a shelter dog. The book includes space for the children to write while they plan their actions and journal their thoughts. I think this book would be great for students to reference in the classroom. I could even make an assignment that has the children take the quiz, pick an issue, and come up with one thing they will do to take action for their cause. This might be good to do toward the end of the unit after we have been exploring some of these issues. I loved this book, an A to Zed march to find your "thing" then do something about it. May take a certain sort of kid or reader, as it's not simplistic. Graphics are fabulous and encouraging every step of the way. Can be used in sections and over a long time, then reused as a template the next time passion strikes. Encourages community, too, which is the bottom line in every solution.
