In the backward way I sometimes do things, I read the last book in this series first, but it in no way diminished this story at all. It is a well written story that captures your attention and holds it throughout the telling of the tale. This is a historical romance and you could say there is also a mystery involved.
Lady Annica Sayles is a woman determined to remain a spinster and never rely on a man, except for her Uncle, cousin and servant/confidant, Hodgeson. She turns suitors away before they have a chance to even get to know her. She has a wonderful circle of female friends and she is loyal to these people. She has taken it upon herself to champion womens causes where she sees injustice and to meet out her own brand of justice where she feels it is warranted.
Tristan Sinclair, eighth earl of Auberville, recently returned from his Naval duties in Africa and the Middle East, has finished settling his late father’s estate and has decided it was time he put his own house “in order”. He has decided to find himself a wife, one that would be manageable and not ask questions, one that was capable and had her own business to attend to so that she wouldn’t hinder him in his duties with the Foreign Office. One of his friends points out Lady Annica as a “capable” woman. Tristan decided she was worth pursuing even though it was known in the Ton that she would probably turn down any offers. Being a patient man, and one used to dealing with tricky negotiations, he sets about to woo the Lady without her realizing what he is up to.
Lady Annica has secrets of her own and whilst trying to “exact justice” for the atrocious deeds done to her dearest friend, bad things begin to happen in their little circle and she herself may be a target as well for some nefarious persons.
I really liked the interactions between Tristan and Annica. I found the characters and their actions to “ring true”; meaning I could see these things playing out in real life situations, albeit historical ones.

I am not really sure how I got stuck on Harlequin authors? This book is a part of a series that involves the Wednesday League. The Wednesday League is a group of ladies that have decided that women get no justice when a man is involved in meting it. Therefore, they take it upon themselves to avenge any wrong to a woman...in order words, they are a vigilante group. I am not sure if such a group existed in this period, but it is a little far fetched. When this heroine/vigilante has the opportunity to avenge a wrong with the help of a willing and powerful man, she goes off on her own. She has no regard for whom she puts in danger. Actually, I think she has a need to receive all the glory for herself. Oh well, the League will continue on...I know because I read two of them out of line. I liked the Hero in this one, but the heroine was not worthy of him. IMHO!
