"Freedman effectively integrates the economic, philosophical, and historical dimensions of Marx′s thought. The book is clear but not simplistic, succinct yet comprehensive, and thoroughly reliable. One will not find a better or more balanced survey on the subject."
I got this book for free from a library "free books that we're throwing away" cart. Thought it was a decent overview of Marxist thought, especially because I don't particularly fancy actually reading Marx himself. I don't recall it saying much of anything about "social perspectives" though.
