It didn’t take but a few pages to get sucked into this story. The author has an easy, readable style that draws you in from the get-go. Terrifically developed characters, spot on historical elements, and a story with a message attached. I loved it! Both Jessica and Colwyn come into this story with baggage but not so much that it bogs the reader down. It only made them more interesting and approachable. I enjoyed the supernatural elements drizzled throughout the story. It brought out the horrific nature of the villain and also a means for bringing the hero and heroine together. Beautiful, beautiful story... one of the most passionate and sensual inspirational romances I’ve ever read and so beautifully written. If you like fantasy or historical, this is a must read!" Long & Short Reviews "This book was amazing! If you can't afford to buy another book then ask your library to order a copy and borrow it, but whatever you do...read this story ASAP... I was in another world the entire time I read this story and it was a fabulous experience. What an escape. I felt their emotion, all of the characters' fears, their joy, their longing for love. It was amazing. I can't say enough great things about this story. The spiritual thread was incredible, too. And the gritty themes and edgy aspects of the romance were scrumptious. The end of the story brought it full circle and concluded in one of the most satisfying endings you can imagine. Not many books leave me smiling and sighing at the end. GALLIMORE was perfectly excuted from start to finish. I saw no weaknesses whatsoever. This is being added to my best fiction of 2008 list." Michelle Sutton, Editor in Chief, Christian Fiction Online Magazine "Time travel, handsome knights, bone-chilling castles, breath-taking romance, an ominous battle between good and evil, and much more, Michelle Griep's splendid debut novel, GALLIMORE, will capture your heart and your soul and leave you begging for more."Author MaryLu Tyndall "...An historical love story with twists and turns that may leave you breathless at times, tearful at others, hopping mad, terrified and wistful." Author Kelly Klepfer "This book is billed as historical fiction, but it is a very fine time travel tale. The author does a wonderful job of capturing a twenty first century woman’s trials and tribulations in the thirteen hundreds. Tarne and his mother are creepy, strange, and evil. I loved Colwyn, who is very strong and stoic, and his page Tagg is an engaging little boy.
I hear voices. Loud. Incessant. And very real. Which basically gives me two options: choke back massive amounts of Prozac or write fiction. I chose the latter. Way cheaper. I've been writing since I discovered blank wall space and Crayolas. I seek to glorify God in all that I write...except for that graffiti phase I went through as a teenager. Oops. Did I say that out loud?
I would have never guessed that this was Michelle Griep’s debut novel. It is a wonderfully written adventure that rivals her later works. I was captivated by the descriptions in this story…not only the characters, but the surroundings. I could totally picture myself back in the times of castles and knights, caught up in the romance and excitement, the danger and intrigue. I love the pluckiness of the heroine of this story, Jessica, she is strong and takes nothing from no one. And the knight, Colwyn, is a character I won’t soon forget. These two characters are linked together…past, present, future…and finding out where it all ends is a great ride. This is indeed a love story, but it is more than that, it is a lesson in forgiveness and redemption. While reading Gallimore, I found myself laughing, gasping, tearful and surprised at times.
I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves medieval times, romance and soul touching stories.
I won this book from Michelle’s blog, but I was under no obligation to give a positive review.
What an odd ending. I liked this book. Griep is a good author. Her characters change and grow through her stories and it feels very believable. I really liked her last book The Captive Heart and was looking for something similar but set in the mid ages. This is very different from that book in style and feel and that threw me a little. I like a good time travel but this was different then others I have read, but more reality then fantasy and that made it tough to try to figure how a happy ending could be realized. There was also some serious darkness in this book. The bad guy had dark evil powers and worshiped evil. Nothing was ever detailed but you got the picture that this guy loved to torture and rape and use evil arts to get what he wanted. The end was a happy one but one I never would have guessed in a million years. I am glad she gives a little prologue and ties it all up nicely but I still felt grief amidst the happy ending. There was no sex, only a couple kisses from the main characters, but the bad guy always wanting to rape the girl was described too well, one scene was too detailed and really was unnecessary. There was a lot of violence, but more was talked about then actually done.
I only discovered Michelle Griep a little over a year ago and I've been trying to get all her books read. Gallimore has lain in my 'to read' basket for months! I picked it up the other day to read and boy, was it ever good! I love, love the medieval era, for one, and I love Christian fiction, for the other. She knocks it out of the ball park on both counts.
Jessica Neale lost her faith the day of her husband's death, and on a journey to England to find peace, encounters a gentle, green-eyed stranger who leads her to the ruins of the medieval castle, Gallimore.
Colwyn Haukswyrth, knight of Gallimore, comes face to face with a storm the likes of which he's never seen, and a woman in the midst of the storm who claims to live centuries in the future!
The product of a family rooted in pain and evil, Colwyn has focused on naught but himself...until now. To a mysteriesou prophecy stitched on a tapestry, through the invasion of Gallimore itself, Colwyn and Jessica are bound together by a lesson in forgiveness and love...a bond that just might be strong enough to survive the grave.
Michelle Griep has done a very worthy job with this book. Her historical facts are accurate, including her descriptions of time, place, weaponry, clothing and food. There is a demonic evil afoot in this castle, but can Jessica find her faith to fight it? Will Colwyn allow Christ to forgive him and heal him from all the hurts heaped upon him by those supposed to have loved him? Will both these characters trust each other so that they can fight the evil together?
The characters are well developed, the gospel message bold, especially in a time where people were not encouraged to have a personal relationship with Christ, but pay priests to go to God for them. I didn't think I would like time travel, but this is amazing. As is her other time travel book. All Michelle's books are wonderful and the great thing is , she has another coming out in just a short while!
Jessica Neal is still recovering from the death of her husband. She travels to England for a peaceful getaway. Maggie finds the ruins of the castle Gallimore. A storm happens upon her and before she can find her way back to the main road, she crashes. When she wakes up, her car is gone and she is stranded in the forest. But she is not alone.
A medieval knight is there as well. When he wakes, he is rude and talks to her with a strange accent. Maggie thinks she has stumbled onto a strange tourist attraction, but the knight, Sir Colwyn, will not let up with the charade. He takes her to castle Gallimore, which is fully standing and filled with life. Jessica can find no explanation for it except that she has somehow traveled back in time.
She instantly becomes the target for Sir Colwyn’s evil brother who believes that she is the fulfillment of a prophecy. Can Jessica and Sir Colwyn overcome their fear and anger to fight this evil foe? Will Jessica be lost in the past forever?
What a well-written and fun adventure. Seeing medieval England through the eyes of Jessica Neal was delightful. Griep created a fearful and realistic place in castle Gallimore. Her medieval characters came alive with her descriptions and dialogue. I loved how Sir Colwyn and Jessica had similar fears and that when they discovered them, their anger melted away. I kept wondering as I read how Griep would end this tale and was oddly surprised and satisfied. I recommend this fun and romantic read for older teens.
I am truly finding this book different than any I have read. You feel like you've fell back into time just as Jessica does and that you walking through this story. It will leave you holding your breath, wanting to pray (but then the people aren't real), and looking forward to what will happen next. I have truly enjoyed it thus far. After finishing this book, you can find love in the midst of hard times. At the end you do find yourself praying and seeking a closer relationship. The story is so unique. If you love castles, knights, and such don't miss reading this book. At one point you are holding your breath and all at once you wake up from a bad situation. Now I hit a tree but so thankful it never spun me back in time. But there is so much you can gleam from this to help your life.
In the short time that I have been reviewing books on my blog, I have been directed (by the Lord, in my opinion) to some incredible books. The latest is ‘Gallimore,’ the debut novel by Michelle Griep (www.mmgriep.com). The tagline for ‘Gallimore’ is “a Wizard of Oz tale with a medieval twist.” Michelle, a resident of Minnesota, in addition to being married and the mother of two boys and two girls, teaches both Civics and Creative Writing for co-ops.
The story starts out with the main character, Jessica Neale, losing her husband in an automobile accident, leaving her to raise her ten-year old son, Jack, alone and to try to go on with life, broken-hearted as she was. Her heart was cold toward God after this tremendous loss. She is encouraged to take trip over to England for restoration and refreshment. On the plane, she meets a Cambridge history professor by the name of Cole Hawksworth, who is returning to his native land. They strike up a conversation, and he offers to accompany her to one of his favorite destinations, Gallimore Castle. A tremendous storm ensues, and Jessica finds herself in the presence of dashing knight named Colwyn Haukswyrth. He provides her the incredible news that the year is 1314!
Jessica is confronted with life as a woman in medieval England. She is suddenly surrounded by characters that speak Olde English, and that help her into what she describes as “a common medieval torture known only to womankind – a dress” (p. 60)! She is a very assertive woman, which does not endear her to the men with whom she encounters!
The scenes which take place in Fourteen Century English include dialogue as you would expect those characters to speak. I thought I was reading Shakespeare (which lived from 1564 to 1616) in some places! Michelle really did a wonderful job of transporting the reader back in time. I could almost smell the malodorous knights and could feel the film that Jessica described as growing on her teeth. We can romanticize the past, but, after reading this book, I am grateful for the comforts of the Twenty First century!
There is a strong Christian theme throughout this novel. The Lord showed Himself over and over, and many of the characters did turn to Him. And there was a character that followed the enemy and called upon the power of the dark side, and he was ultimately vanquished – as will be the enemy of our soul at the end of our story! Amen!
It is obvious from reading this novel that Michelle Griep is a very gifted writer. I found this book to be incredibly well-written. It warms my heart when I read a book that is so beautifully crafted!
Here’s a sample:
“The embrace of her Creator wrapped around her with as much reality and promise as Colwyn’s warm arms had held… A cancer had been removed, and a pink skin of healing knit its way around her bleeding heart.” (p. 160)
Another one is:
“With open eyes, he saw the filthiness of his own soul in light of the holiness of God. Every black sin he’d ever committed covered him like open, festering sores. Awful and inescapable. He wanted to hide, run away from the terrible light that exposed all the ugliness inside of him.” (p. 180)
I was incredibly impressed by the debut from this wonderful author, and I greatly look forward to reading more in the future!
In addition to this wonderfully written tome, Michelle has contributed to the following books:
Cup of Comfort Devotional for Mothers and Daughters
Life Savors for Women
Traveling Calvary’s Road
This book was preciously and generously provided to me by the author for review purposes.
If you can't afford to buy another book, then get your library to order it. But you MUST read this book if you love romance, fantasy, medieval stories, time travel, etc.

My review:
WOW! Gallimore is the most amazing time travel medieval romance novel I've ever read! I read most of the story in one day. I couldn't put it down. This story is ten times better than The Time Traveler's Wife and it's comparible to the best fantasy fiction on the market today. Michelle Griep has the plotting, pacing, and heart pounding suspense wrapped up in a tale that is one of the most intense, page-turning novels I've read this year.
Griep has a gift for describing details that bring the setting to life, and she doesn't give anyone in the story a break. Not even the reader. The sites, smells, and heartache of that day were all brilliantly portrayed in Gallimore. Griep can describe the grossest things better than most male authors. I could see it all as I read. And the battle/fight scenes will blow your mind. Her skill for writing this type of story is impressive because to have a truly fabulous medieval novel there has to be conflict, terror, and impossible feats of chivalry to make the story compelling. Griep has all this perfectly crafted in Gallimore.
I'm so impressed. Truly.
Gallimore was perfectly excuting from start to finish. I saw no weaknesses whatsoever. This is being added to my best fiction of 2008 list.
Gallimore was published by Black Lyon Publishing and was released in December 2008
Knights & Castles what more could you ask for in a book? That is what drew me to the cover and book...but boy was I in for a surprise with the content! This book has it all! Immediately you are drawn into the story of a woman who is on a search for herself amongst grief! When she is in an accident and wakes up a few centuries in the past, she is drawn into a story of good versus evil of the greatest kind.I loved the story of Jessica - I mean she has my name so how could it be bad right - she is such a spitfire and has such amazing courage. She never gives up and has a heart for others. I loved how caring she was for Tagg. She stood up for evil and was willing to sacrifice herself to help others.Colwyn is a brawn man (ok I read to many Scottish stories) he is everything you think of when you imagine a knight. He is strong and courageous. I love how he develops over the story. I enjoyed learning why he seemed to have no hope. Jessica and Colwyn are a story I will not soon forget and I truly loved the story! I would encourage anyone who loves an epic story to read this book!
This author is a favorite of mine and while I thought I had read all of her books I saw this one in my kindle library. How did I miss this? I am glad I came across this time travel romance. It was easy to read and a different sort of a read for me. The characters were so likeable. I really enjoyed it. I hope Ms. Griep will consider doing a sequel. I would love another book and maybe see Geoffrey with his own story. ;)
Wrenched from her element into a world beyond her control - will it set her free from her self-enforced bondage? Can this wonderful historical experience tie her future to the past? Read on to find out.
This story kept me enthralled until I reached the end, wanting to know how it all would work out. Incredibly written!
Jessica Neale has shut down toward life and God since her husband's tragic death. For her son's sake, she allows her mother to talk her into taking a therapeutic vacation in England, and while there visiting castle ruins, she finds herself sucked into to a medieval world complete with castles, knights, and Old English jargon. Her arrival displaces Colwyn -- a knight on his way to battle -- and therefore puts him and the inhabitants of Gallimore Castle in a precarious situation with King Edward. Much to Jess' and Colwyn's chagrin, they can't seem to get rid of each other. But oh, they try. :-)
This was a beautiful, heart-wrenching story that wonderfully demonstrates the difficult but rewarding choice to show kindness and love to someone who doesn't deserve it. Jess and Colwyn are such wounded, tortured souls. I couldn't help but cheer them on with each step they took toward releasing their grief and choosing to love again.
I didn't really get into the book until the halfway mark -- not because of any fault with the pace or plot -- it was rather because I didn't like Colwyn at first. I wanted to smack him over the side of his head a few times. But by the middle of the book, I was biting my nails over his safety and how the book would end. I was so hooked at that point that I stayed up until three in the morning, anxious to find out what would happen. Griep gave it a beautiful, heart-warming ending -- it wasn't what I wanted for one of the characters, but after thinking about it, I realized that had it ended the way I wanted it to, that character would have been miserable.
Michelle Griep is a fantastic writer! Her frequent use of the five senses and graphic descriptions immerse the reader into the story rather than distract from it. No cardboard characters in this book. They're so real you can reach out and touch them -- they do the wrong thing, they struggle with selfishness, and they ached to be loved. And best of all, Griep knows how to write humor and weave it perfectly into a story filled with tear-jerking emotion. I'm giving it four stars, and waiting with bated breath for Michelle Griep's next release. :-) If you dig roguish knights, castles, evil villains, and a fast-paced, gripping story, you won't want to miss out on Gallimore.
Gallimore is a fantastic medieval-fantasy read. I was amazed at the way Michelle wrote it true to the time period. In some medieval books the dialogue and happenings are more modern than I would like, but that was not so in this book. She really captured the feel of the time period. Jess is an amazing character, with a lot of depth and you really get to know her well. Colwyn, though rough and mean at first, becomes a very lovable character. I never could guess what was going to happen in the end. It could have gone countless ways, but I liked the ending Michelle chose. I just wish the ending wouldn’t have been so sudden, and she would have used a couple more chapters to finish the storyline. Still, this is a great fantasy read that I believe readers will really enjoy.
After reading Michelle Griep's A Heart Deceived, I wanted to read another of her books. This one promised medieval castles, knights, treachery and danger. And time travel. At first, I couldn't quite believe the scenario, but as I read on, I was captivated by the setting—Gallimore Castle—and by the details of life in the year of our Lord 1314. This story may be a fantasy, but a well-researched one it is. Intriguing character development, ramped-up tension, and humor due to well-planted anachronisms, kept me reading. How would the author end this fascinating tale? Very suddenly, as it happened. But, I think, satisfactorily.
Sweeping tale about a modern day woman who is transported to the middle ages in England, Gallimore Castle specifically. The romanticism is worm off instantly in what she observes of the harsh realities of life then: violence, social classes, women's roles, hygiene, plumbing....need I say more? But, then in the rough yet noble knight that continues to show up and save her, a mighty tale unfolds. A suspenseful read with danger and unknown outcomes for Jess and Colwyn....it kept me guessing about how it would resolve until near the end! I love Ms. Griep's writing style and enjoyed her medieval tale.
This debut is such a great story and one I've wanted to read for a long time :) Jessica is an amazing character and my favorite in this one. Loved her courage, faith, passion, and the way she responded in every way! The black magic was soooo creepy, but it was true to the story and tangibly done. The ending wasn't quite what I was expecting, but overall nicely done and a good ending. Despite his many flaws, Colwyn really was my hero.
From the bookmarker: A Wizard of Oz Tale with a Medieval Twist :) Also from bookmarker: Castles and Danger and Knights....Oh my! *Love this bookmarker*
This was a really fun, light read. It was the fairy tale that all little girls dream of. Jess is giving the Knight in shining armor that rescues her. It will make you think What if, all through it. A very good read if you are looking for a light reading book.
I loved this book! I wish it was 100-200 pages longer. I really didn't want this story to end. Looking forward to reading Michelle Griep's other books.
Really enjoyed this book: it's a unique story with a very realistic setting. Griep does not romanticize the mediaeval period as is often done in our 21st century, nor does she shy away from the reality of the dark supernatural-as well as the truth that God is greater than Satan and protects His own! I thought the characters were 'gritty' but understandably as their past is uncovered. I also loved how everything was tied together in the end-though I wasn't thrilled with Colewyn's end! Overall, a well-written and enjoyable book!
This book surprised me. Too often romance novels with the heroine transported to a place in the distant past turn out to be overly sexual. This one had a good story with lots of interesting action.
I love historical fiction but not am not crazy about time-travel romances. I gave it a try based on other authors' recommendations and it was definitely worth it! It is amazing that this is a debut novel because the author demonstrates writing skills better than other published authors. The characters are well-drawn---we get into the minds of both the H & h, the setting is so well-described---you can imagine what it really was like in the 1300's. I liked that the author included humor (bantering between Jess and Colwyn), a strong spiritual message (forgiveness, letting go of grief, trusting God, etc...), and a H & h you can root for. This is a book I would have read in one sitting if motherhood wasn't calling me. Having said all that, I give the book a 4.5 stars because of the ending. *Spoiler alert* I felt the ending was a bit too short. Jess returns to the present day and is found by Cole after she has a car accident. He takes her to the hospital and then the chapter ends. The last chapter is an epilogue 4 years later with Jess and Cole married with a toddler. I would have liked to read more about Jess and Cole's relationship to get to that point because up until the last chapter, she was wildly in love with Colwyn. I think from what is stated in the epilogue, it can be inferred that Colwyn was killed by Tarne and I suppose that is the only ending that makes sense with the story. Jess would have returned to the present day and partnered with Cole (Colwyn's ancestor) but if Colwyn lived, he would have remained in the 1300s and lived the rest of his days without Jess. It was a bittersweet ending and further time spent on Jess & Cole's relationship would have assuaged some of the pain of Colwyn's death. Anyway, I still recommend this book and look forward to reading Ms. Griep's other works.
I've read other books by this author, and this one, albeit her first published book, compared quite favorably with them. An amazing debut novel! Griep does her research well. It almost seemed as if she had lived in the Middle Ages in England, and she painted a picture which did not ignore some of the less pleasant aspects of medieval life, including how servants were treated, as well as some of the gross parts of life back then.
Jessica, the main character, was in England to help her recover from the sudden death of her husband. A man she meets on the flight over recommends some places of interest which are not in the published guidebooks. She rents a car and sets off to visit the remains of Gallimore. A sudden violent storm arises as she approaches, and she has an auto accident. Upon regaining consciousness she is confused. Where is her rental car? Who is this man dressed in period medieval costume atop a huge horse? Is this a theme park gone bad? Or has she really plunged back into 1314? Being a 21st century girl she does not exactly fit right in, and Colwyn, her rescuer, does his best to keep her out of trouble. And trouble there is. And very dark evil.
The narrative is compelling, especially as the story builds. I did feel that the medieval part ending was somewhat abrupt, but that's the way with time travel. Now you're here ... and now you're somewhen else.
Some reviewers were not satisfied with the epilogue. It was, admittedly, not overly fleshed out. But that wasn't really the story. It answered the question, "So did Jess and Colwyn ever see each other again?" (I'm not saying -- read it yourself to find out.) The real story was in Old Gallimore. And a well-told tale, it was!
Interesting time travel novel. Jessica Neale is grieving over the death of husband. She decides to take a bit of a break and heads to England. On her way there she meets Professor Cole. Cole suggests that she visit the castle/ruins of Gallimore. They make plans to head there together, but something goes wrong and Jess ends ups in medieval times. She comes across a knight Colwyn, who is brutish and speaks in terms that she barely understands. She is held captive by his brother Tarne at Gallimore. Through her determination and perseverance she is able to survive in the old times with the helpful of some gallant characters. She also helps a young boy names Tagg who reminds her of her little boy that she left behind. Through her time there she begins to fall for Colwyn and despite his demeanor she begins to see his good and kind side. The ending was a bit disappointing, but I think it fit well.
Midevil adventure, time travel, and romance, be still my geeky little heart. I really enjoyed this story. I also appreciate the fact that salvation through Christ was boldly and clearly shown. Don't get me wrong. This book was not "preachy". In fact, there wasn't a strong religious theme present and I begin to worry that the author would do as so many others - take the reader right up to that point and then leave them hanging but that was not the case. This is my second book by Michelle Griep, and I look forward to reading them all.
I have enjoyed other books by Ms Griep, so when my Kindle "suggested" more by this author , I thought "sure"! I was NOT disappointed! In fact, my Kindle reading app helped me finish this book in 2 days! Thank goodness I had some routine book work to do at work and could listen part of each day! Time travel, a dashing knight on a steed, and a strong woman...watch how God works!!
This is a very good time travel story that does have an unexpected HEA to it. It is a clean read. It's been awhile since I read it and after reading the blurb on it I remember some of it and that I really liked it, but can't tell you much of the story without confusing you! It's definitely worth your time.
This is the second book that I have read by Michelle. I have another favorite author. It’s a story of loss, love & God’s healing of grief in the mist of mystery, adventure and romance. Couldn’t stop reading it and so sad to come to the end.
What a delightful debut novel! I've been reading all the recent books by Michelle Griep, and then decided to go back and read all her older books. If you love history, time travel, second chances, you will love this story!
3.5 stars rounding up. I really enjoyed this and it would have been a full 4 stars, maybe 5 except for the ending which I'm not sure how I feel about. It left me feeling a bit sad and wanting to know more.
