Art: 21 - Art in the 21st Century

Rate this book
This companion to a new public television series on the contemporary visual arts introduces some of the most interesting artists working in America today. In four sections -- on Identity, Place, Consumption, and Spirituality -- the authors explore such provocative issues as how artists address sexual or racial identity in their work, and how creativity is affected by changing notions of place in today's era of transnationalism and cyberspace.Accessible yet challenging, this richly illustrated work shows the direct relevance of contemporary art to everyday life. Richard Serra, Bruce Nauman, Maya Lin, Matthew Barney, and Barbara Kruger are just a few of the artists represented in a book that spans varied mediums to reveal the full breadth of art in today's America.

This is the companion book to the PBS series of the same name. A good introduction to some really great art and artists. The series has a little bit of everything-ranging the gambit from performance to traditional 2d media to space age computer installations. I like the mix of well know artist (Known outside of art circles) such as Michael Ray Charles and Maya Lin with some lesser know but equal as strong artist such as Pepon Osorio and John Feodorov.

To anyone that is interested in art pick this up! I'm really glad I did (and it was actually originally something I picked up when I was researching something). You gain insight on four major focal points of contemporary artists and their works. Not to mention the pictures are great too--so, it can be a coffee table book as well as a great book for a rainy day.
