In the next two installments of the four-book arc that began with City Secrets, the tide has turned at the elite Canterwood Crest Academy….Will Sasha Silver dethrone Heather Fox and become the school’s Queen Bee? Packed with BFF scandal, lying roommates, secrets between teammates, and more, these are two of the most dramatic Canterwood books ever!
Jessica Burkhart is the author of the best-selling Canterwood Crest series which has sold over 1.6 million copies in multiple languages. She has also written the Unicorn Magic series, the YA novel Wild Hearts, and edited a YA anthology--Life Inside My Mind.
Sasha is still mad at Paige for what she did. Callie hates Sasha because Jacob told Callie about what really happened the night of Sasha's party. Heather is being, well, nice which can't last long. And is Brit a friend, or competition?
Only the strong survive at Canterwood, but maybe the obvious has taken it's turns.
Well even those this series might be a bit young and "fluffy" for the girl who has Divergent on her shelf and loves dystopian/apocalyptic...it really isn't. This series is my fun, guilty pleasure. Where I don't have to think I can just enjoy and laugh along. Not that I don't do that with other books, just saying. Anyway this series has been one that I have really enjoyed and I just keep picking them up! Despite the age difference :P
After all the Jacob/Ben/Callie drama that occurred at Sasha's birthday party Sasha felt like things were slowly getting better. She and Ben were friends again and she had just started to actually be "together" with Jacob. There was just Callie left to sort out all the drama with.
At the birthday party Sasha had lied to Callie and said that she had kissed Jacob, at that time Callie's boyfriend. But in reality he had kissed her. She knew that Callie didn't need to hear that. She was going through some tough stuff. And she still is, that's why she and Jacob still haven't told her yet, to you know, clear the air. Callie has some big YENT (elite group of riders) test coming up and she can't afford to be distracted. So Sasha didn't tell her.
Big oops, turns out that her best friend and roommate did tell Callie. This hurts Sasha, if you can't trust you best friend not to rat you out to your ex-best friend who can you trust? So Sasha has moved in with the new girl at Canterwood, Brit. Brit is another YENT rider and had been needing a roommate. Both she and Sasha come from smaller stables and were thrilled to have that in common. They're getting along great, but Sasha still hates that now there is a wall up not only between her and Callie but between her and Paige, her old roommate, too! But with the YENT tryouts coming up with three girls vying for the one spot? She has other things to be worried about!!
Pros:Okay okay okay okay. I just love this series. I really, really do! It's the perfect mix of fashion, horses, girly-middle-school drama, and girly things. And fun. Like I said, I feel like I don't have to think and like I can just sit back and relax and enjoy. These books make me happy and I really love reading them. I like the characters and the drama doesn't bug me. Sure there are a couple little things that rub me the wrong way (they'll be listed in the cons) but honestly there is like hardly anything that I truly dislike about this series. I started it a couple years ago and then the library didn't get all of them. Bummer. Now that they have I've been treating myself to them, haha. Because even though it's a little young and little more middle school-y these are still really good books. It's not all backstabbing and boyfriends. It's living at a boarding school and horses and routines too! It's well rounded and fun :)
Cons:Really the only con that I can think of is the fact that the characters don't seem 12 and 13, they seem older. So whenever it's mentioned I get drawn back to the whole absurdity of 12 and 13 year olds having boyfriends. *sighs* Personal opinion, but that's too young. It's really my only complaint, I tend to think of the characters as a little older, haha. Maybe nearing 15?
Content:Boy/girl gossip and drama. 1-2 kisses and possibly a couple minor cuss words like crap or suck. Although I really don't remember any other than maybe one use of suck.
Overall, this is such a fun clean series and book that I would just love to see other young teens and tweens enjoy. I'm not ashamed to admit that I like them :) Because I really do! I would recommend to teens and tweens...those who like a sort of middle grade drama with horses and lip gloss thrown in.
“I feel exactly the same way. So, in the arena, we’re teammates.” I smiled. This was going waaay better than I’d expected, “Definitely.” “But not friends,” Callie said.
YENT tryouts, Halloween and gossip bloggers - seriously love it!
This one wasn't as good as the previous ones. This one was filled with mistakes. a couple examples:
Brit telling Sasha about her best friend drama back home, when that was discussed in the last book. It's talked about as if they never discussed it before.
Sasha texts Brit about going to the slice. Then a couple of pages later reaches her dorm, and re-asks her to go to the slice. Again, as though the previous conversation had not happened.
There were a lot of little errors too. Example Halloween being spelled "Hallowwen" This one really wasn't edited very well at all. It's copyright date is 2010, and I just bought it, so they aren't keeping up on fixing mistakes after printing either.
The books also have gotten shorter, and end abruptly. It seems like they are pushing these out, and not doing proper quality control. This one was not worth the price.
Anything hinting at the title came towards the end, just like the last one. Basically a rehashing of anything that happened in the last book that wasn't a rehashing of what happened in the book before *that*. Then, just when things start to pick up and get interesting...it ends. Not even a clean end. it ends as though in the middle of a paragraph. I turned the page to read the next sentence and....nothing.
Pretty disappointed with this one. I most likely will not read when I get to the books with the new students. I read on the blog today that next winter it will end. This is probably for the best.
The pressure is on for the final slot on the YENT. And while things are still hard between Sasha and Callie and Paige at least she can relax in her new room at Orchard with new girl Brit. And it doesn’t hurt that she’s on friendly terms with all of the Trio for once.
Surprisingly, I really enjoyed the blog storyline. I didn’t think I would, I think I actually rolled my eyes when it was first brought up. But right away I had two suspects. The girl who was angry at not getting what she had worked so hard for or the girl who seems too perfect. I’ll leave it at that and not give anything away. Annoyingly, Jacob endeared himself to me through the book, I would have rooted for him all the way back in 7-8th grade. It definitely felt off to go through the whole book with hardly any Paige though, I miss her.
I know it’s hard keeping continuity in a long series, but the inconsistency I found in this book is that they said for the first yent tryouts the girls went into the office individually for final results but when it actually took place in book 5 they went in as a group for final results and individually for meetings with the yent instructor the day before results.
4.5 stars! Finally(!!!) this one got delivered and I finally could find out more about what happened. The last book ended with a cliffhanger (ARGHHHHH), so I just needed to know how it would continue.
In the last book there was a giant (but not unexpected) explosion between Paige and Sasha. Like I said, not unexpected, the whole last book was about the strained friendship between Paige and Sasha. Paige kept pushing and pushing, and more pushing. Sasha just needed time. And then that ending part. Finding out what Sasha found out, I could imagine she said no to her friend. That is not what friends do. I know Callie is also Paige's friend, but still, this was Sasha's story to tell, not yours, Paige. You already push to hell about stuff, and then you do that? I can so imagine that Sasha did what she did.
And that was leave and become roommates with Brit. I love Brit and I just felt so happy that we wouldn't have miss Push Push Paige, but instead would have someone who matches Sasha, who respects her boundaries, who helps her out, cheers for her. Brit is amazing. Though I am still kind of hesitant about it. It was just too easy and I am kind of wondering if this is the true Brit or not. I know, it is a bit strange, but I can't help it. Maybe Brit is truly just kind and nice, but it feels a bit too convenient. Maybe I am just reading too much into it.
This book also continues on the strained relationship between Callie (bleh) and Paige (bleh) and Sasha.
We also have YENT, though I wasn't surprised to see who won that one. I so hate it when it is obvious who will win from the get-go. Come on writers give us a surprise, no need to go through the road most walked.
Then we have some extra drama with a new blog. I am quite curious who it can be though I have at least one main culprit (Julia) and one I am not sure about (Brit). Especially after reading an excerpt on Amazon about the next book. With that information and with how Julia reacted? Or with how Brit is still so perfect? I am really curious to see who has that blog. I hope that Sasha won't get in trouble though. She finally settled in, she is finally letting go of all the drama, she deserves some peace and quiet.
We also have some lovely Jacob x Sasha romance. Again, I will stick to the whole: They don't feel the age they are. They are what? 12, maybe 13? I am sorry I don't believe for one bit that the romance is like that at that age. This is way too mature, especially considering how the girls and boys look at the relationships. I would still stick to my 16/17 year old theory. That fits way better. But the parts were they were together were super sweet and I was just aww-ing all the time. I also loved that Jacob invited Brit at times, he really cares about his girlfriend and her life.
The whole Eric and Jacob part? It had me grinning from one ear to the other. I won't spoil anything, but let me just say that it was about time this happened.
And then we have the tons of horse riding, the ton of fun training, and I have to say I loved it all!
I can't wait for the next book to be delivered (I ordered it when I was halfway through this book), at least it will be here sooner as that book is in stock (and I don't have to get it second-hand through Amazon). :D Though after that... I will only have that one bonus book, and then this series is over. I will really miss it.
Scandals, Rumors, and Lies By Jessica Burkhart Realistic Fiction 181 pages
Sasha Silver and her ex-best friend, Paige, had a huge fight so Sasha moved in with her new best friend in the world, Brit. Heather, the queen bee, has become a great friend of Sasha’s. Sasha’s favorite season, Halloween, is coming up. Her first official date with her new boyfriend Jacob was a beautiful, romantic scene. Sasha has been freaked out because Callie made the YENT team but is still being nasty. Jacob has invited Sasha and Brit out so he can get to know Sasha’s new roommate. Mean while, extremely mean and nasty blogs, one meant towards Sasha being too popular, and another calling Brit a small town girl, which is true but hurt Brit’s feelings. The last post is about Paige. It says she had a HUGE fight with her boyfriend Ryan. This was just gossip though!!! Halloween comes and a “spooky” trail ride had been set up for riders only where things pop out. While Sasha is on, she turns around and a guy in a black mask had replaced Brit. It was Jacob! When he apologized to Erik earlier that week for kissing Sasha when he wasn’t dating her. Erik agreed to give Jacob riding lessons though. This is a truly romantic, comedy with a twist of bad luck. I gave it 5 stars for its awesome, cute, powerful message of friendship.
I keep finding inconsistencies in this book about the way the girls found out who made the YENT team. It isn't a really big deal, but the way it actually happens is different from how Sasha recalls it. Honestly I thought the entire book needed another round of edits because I caught so many errors that were really obvious. Something I've noticed throughout all of the books is that Sasha loves to use the adjective "super" in front of every other adjective but instead of something being "super soft" it's written as "supersoft". That's how its written every time something is super which is a lot of times. I'm guessing it's just a publishing house editorial style, but it just pops out and glares at me especially because everything is super to Sasha. Everything is supersoft, supercool, superamazing, supercute and it's actually exhausting keeping up with the enthusiasm. Not much happened in this book except Sasha and Brit becoming better friends, actually being sort of mature with Callie and Eric (for once!), watching Callie, Alison and Julia try out for the YENT and the start of a new gossip blog which is interesting.
I was a little disappointed with the past two books I have read in this series. The plot jumps around and this particular installment seemed a little rushed. There really wasn't any substance to it. Also, the gossip blogger wasn't as dramatic as I thought she would be. She enters the plot about two thirds of the way through the book. Also, there are some problems with continuity.
On top of that the errors with spelling are atrocious. Worse than any of the others.
It also end abruptly. Plus it shamelessly plugs certain products to tweens, e.g. the BlackBerry. Instead of texting the girls BlackBerry Message and call it BBM in coversation. It makes things less believable.
Honestly, I'm glad I borrowed this one from the library instead of buying it.
This book is great for any horse lovers. It's a page turner and it was really hard to put down. I read it over the holidays and the book was a great distraction from other things that were going on around me. I've read almost all of the series because I find the book so good. They always end with either a relieving ending or an ending that leaves you hanging and makes you want to read the next one. I thought it was a really great book.
