"Florian provides near perfection through simplicity in this re-creation of a joyful winter experience....Lovely for wintertime story hours."--Booklist.
The text in this book is very basic and the illustrations feel a bit sloppy, but my two-year-old really enjoys it, possibly because of the mention of pancakes. As a very basic introduction to winter for kids under three, it works well, but there's not much a story to engage older readers.
I read it to my Pre-K class. When I asked them what they thought about it some said it was boring while others thought it was fun and related it back to the snow day we just had.
A Winter Day by Douglas Florian is a very simple look at a winter day for young children, using just 23 words in a rhyming pattern.
The large font, rhymes, and small vocabulary used make this a strong choice for beginning readers. This would work well for Baby or Toddler storytimes and as a short read-aloud.
The illustrations were prepared with a combination of pen and ink, Magic Markers, and colored pencils. The style is simple, yet detailed with mostly double page spreads. Details shown include gray skies, snow and snowflakes, family breakfast, fireplace blazing, winter clothing, skating and sledding.

I believe I came across this picture book at a used bookshop. It immediately became a winter~time favorite read aloud. I love to recite it first, as a poem. Then I read it as we all enjoy the artwork and compare it to the pictures we visualized as I first recited the poem.
I got this book from the scholastic book order in first grade and I read it so often that I would say the next line before turning the page. I was really proud of myself!
This simple book was perfect for my ELL kindergarteners. They loved talking about the pictures. The text did not overwhelm the book. A really nice simple winter read for the young crowd.
