Hekate is, without question, one of the most popular goddesses in the world today, worshiped by Hellenic Recons, Wiccans, and Neo-pagans alike. Hekate has many roles and many guises. To some she is a beautiful maiden, to others the dark mother. She has been called the guide of souls; the protector of the home; the giver of wealth; the mistress of powerful magic and frightful witches; the dweller on the threshold and the place where three roads meet. These and other aspects of the goddess are explored in the pages of this unique book, which honors Hekate's diversity by collecting a wide array of offerings from her modern-day devotees, including poetry, essays, short stories and accounts of personal experiences. Whether you've worshiped Hekate for ages or are just now discovering the power of this awesome goddess, you will want to read Bearing Torches.
This was an anthology devoted to the Greek Titan/Goddess Hekate. There were authors' personal accounts, histories, poems, and other musings contained within this book. I found this book to be as diverse as the authors themselves which, for me, was a good thing. Overall, I thought that the different entries were mostly exceptional, with only a handful of the entries not really resonating with me. If you are interested in Hekate, or even the Greek Pantheon, Bearing Torches is definitely worth your time and money.
The Bibliotheca Alexandrina devotionals series are each a labor of love. I don't think that they are meant to be read straight-through - though you could if you wanted - and I make use of this book like a prayer book when engaged in worship or contemplation. I'll pick a page, read it, think about it and let it move me. Not all of the prayers or contemplation prompts work for me, but even the ones that don't have given me inspiration to look at things a different way or given me insight that I lacked beforehand. Polytheists, I believe, would adore this title. Witches who have a relationship with Hekate will too. The polytheistic and pagan communities need books like this, that delve into spirituality and knowledge of the Gods. I hope that Bibliotheca Alexandrina keeps up the good work, and I look forward to reading their other offerings.
I was actaully quite pleased by this book. I've been trying to incorporate the gods more into my practice, and some of the entries in here spoke to me enough that I could use them. There are so many different formats of poetry and prose that I'm sure everyone could find something that speaks to them in these pages.
