I find that I get asked “What’s this organisational development thing really about?” quite regularly.
More often than not, people in front of me will then proceed to try and steer my answer in such a way, that it reassures them in thinking that OD is actually “just do this one thing, and everything will be ok”.
Which is in fact a very natural way our mind reacts to overwhelming complexity. So of course, you’d prefer a cookie-cutter action to add on your to do list between 4 and 4.30 pm.
Except OD (or whatever current term the concept has evolved to by now) isn’t shallow, or cookie-cutter.

From now on, this book will be the one to which I will direct people who’d like to understand what It’s about, and delve into the subject.
I’ve read previous books from the authors, and I feel we’re not going to a different place. This is more about going deeper and wider. As if you’re accompanying someone as they're honing their craft.
I find its scope is perfect. It goes wide enough so you see just how broad the topic is, but keeps it practical and below 500 pages.
It also goes deep enough, for you to actually get some actionable ideas out of it.

Want to go wider, or deeper? Well… That’s not an issue. The book does a great job of highlighting crucial quotes every few pages. Those quotes always come from the giants upon whose shoulder this domain of expertise has been built in the previous decades, and recent years.
Too scientific for you? The book alternates models with a fictional (yet embarrassingly recognizable) case, for you to really connect with. Not a fan of fiction? Skip the italic part (although I wouldn't... They make it so true-to-life, without falling into clichés, that it'll help you to get more people on board, if that is in fact your goal).
If you need “how to evolve organisations” to be summed up in a blog no longer than a screen, you should stop your search anyhow, and come back later.
If not, this is a place anyone (Leader or expert professional) can start, or come to for new inspiration.

This book serves as an invaluable guide for societies, organizations, and individuals seeking to effectively navigate the overwhelming influx of information and profound changes that characterize this new era. It emphasizes the crucial importance of involving a broader range of people in decision-making processes to manage these challenges successfully. However, this approach can only be fruitful if leaders are willing to undergo personal transformation in order to facilitate such inclusion.

While E. Goldratt's "The Goal" provided insights in the 80s on enhancing the performance of industrial organizations to meet societal demands, this book tackles the 21st-century imperative of providing individuals with a sense of purpose in their work and their contributions to society. By doing so, it propels societies, organizations, and individuals into an invigorating transition process.

This book is a must-read for managers, politicians, and board members who are genuinely committed to granting individuals the opportunity to discover purpose in their work and enabling them to contribute to the trajectory of their organizations.

3,5 sterren. Superveel inzichten opgedaan, maar het was zo enorm beschrijvend dat het ook lastig was om helemaal tot het einde geboeid te blijven.
