A prequel to the events of Far Cry 6, this amphetamine-boosted comic introduces Juan Cortez, one of the central characters in the newest installment of Ubisoft's hit video game series. Collection includes the 4 issue series plus cover gallery and bonus material.

You know the bits in Far Cry games going on from Far Cry 3 and onwards, where the game's writers feel they have a serious story to tell, inbetween the silly violence you're dumping on the game's evil NPCs..?
This is that story bit, but only that story, and with all the fun, silly stuff omitted. It doesn't work. And it's still a Far Cry book, which means it's very hard to take any of it seriously, which makes it in turn read as quite pretentious.

For a computer game tie-in, this wasn't too bad. I mean, expectations are bound to be low, and this hokum is never really going to be able to deliver what it wants. An over-adept bounty hunter/guerilla fighter/whatever is on an island nation ravaged by politics, juntas and ruling hierarchies, especially since one of those rare earth metals has been found. Looking at all the sides in the current situation, he seems to have settled with his initial employers, but is anything actually that clear-cut? Reading this it's hard to see how it would convert to a computer game (apart from his risible explosive backpack rocket launcher thingy), but that's not my bag anyway. This wants to look at some action and pretend to know all about global politics, state corruption and guerilla warfare, but having the lead so unlikeably know-it-all really hampers things. Oh, and of the 120pp, a third are covers and galleries.

Alors, ce tome est un préquel aux évènements de Far Cry 6. Alors, dans ce tome, on va retrouver plusieurs personnages à travers les divers jeux Far Cry, même si l'histoire concentre sur le personnage de Juan Cortez.
L'histoire se déroule sur l'île de Santa Costa, où trois parties tentent de contrôler toute l'île et comme cité dans le résumé, le défenseur des ouvriers, Max Purillo, engage Juan Cortez pour organiser la rébellion et la guérilla. Juan Cortez prévoit toujours à l'avance, même en arrivant, il se doute qu'on le suit de près. En même temps, il a fait son chemin et sa réputation via des guérillas et autres et forcément, ça intéresse les trois camps d'avoir quelqu'un d'aussi expérimenté auprès d'eux.
Bref, on avance dans l'histoire et Juan entre en contact avec chaque leader de faction. Mais pour réussi une guérilla, il faut prévoir pleins de choses à l'avance, savoir traquer sa « proie » sans se faire voir, faire des filatures, enfin vous voyez le genre. De plus, que faut-il pour réussir une guérilla ? Des armes ! C'est là qu'intervient un personnage croisé dans Far Cry 4, Longinus, qui continue toujours son rôle de fournisseur d'armes. Néanmoins, quelqu'un a trahi la cause alors qu'ils tentent d'éliminer le président de l'île. De plus, on remarque qu'il est accro à ses pilules, quand il n'en prend pas, il tremble. Pendant ses délires avec sa fièvre, on recroise plusieurs personnages des jeux Far Cry comme Vaaz, Paga Ming, l'agent de la CIA Willis (qu'on a croisé dans un des jeux Far Cry) et même Anton Castillo.
En parlant de Castillo, Juan est natif de Yara et il était enfant lorsque le père d'Anton a été éliminé. On y apprend un peu de sa vie d'avant et sa jeunesse. Alors qu'il prévoit ses plans, on voit un comics de Juan que l'on va revoir dans Far Cry 6, un comics américain qui va lui servir d'inspiration pour le Supremo. Enfin, il y a une phrase qu'il a cité que j'apprécie assez : « Les sportifs sont les animaux les plus proches des politiciens. Si vous connaissez leur tatif, ils se couchent avec la plus grande docilité ». Pour finir, à la fin de l'ouvrage, on voit Juan retourner chez lui et il est approché par une rebelle du coin, Clara Garcia, qui a besoin de lui pour éliminer un ennemi commun : Anton Castillo.
En conclusion, ce fut un excellent tome, on en apprend pas mal sur le personnage de Juan Cortez, son passé et c'est un préquel à Far Cry 6, c'est assez sympa. Cela peut compléter largement votre collection Far Cry avec également Far Cry : le rite initiatique avec Anton Castillo et son fils, que j'ai également chroniqué sur mon blog. Bref, un ouvrage assez sympa.
