TO THE BARRICADES

Cosette, having grown into a lovely young woman, has attracted the attention of student Marius Pontmercy. Jean Valjean, ever suspicious that his past will be uncovered, stands in the way of the budding relationship, but Marius discovers another threat to Valjean–a murder plot masterminded by Thénardier! Thénardier’s daughter Éponine has fallen for Marius, and must choose where she stands, as will the entire city of Paris when the barricades go up and the June Rebellion begins! Who shall be redeemed, and who shall die in the streets, in this stanza of Victor Hugo’s immortal hymn to the human spirit?

Painful Love

Telling the tale of poor love sick and honorable Marius up to just before the revolution truly begins this series continues to convert the classic tale of love, redemption, and revolution fantastically even though the visual format is surely limiting (and my remembrance of the original story is a bit hazy at times after not only taking a long time to listen to but being a while back.) The visuals used such as seeing people as animals, the emotions portraited by the various characters, and even the backgrounds continue to captivate me as I realize regardless of the length of the original novel that this omnibus series is soon to reach its end. It is clear that Takahiro Arai has a passion for the story giving life to the world even with limitations.

Speaking of bringing characters to life one of my favorite characters, being Éponine, is lovingly portraited as she discovers her own place in the world and although I know her fate ultimately I still march forward to the sound of revolution as we quite possibly reach the conclusion of this masterful series soon.

This is the Marius volume! The character designs were a bit too similar in this go about- and there was a lot of off-screen action that made for a clunkier narrative. My biggest peeve was the ending with the revolution seemingly coming out of nowhere. But Volume 4 should be the Enjorlas volume so that'll be the focus; just little set up for it.

Easily the weakest of the volumes I've read. I do not like Marius at all, and he takes up most of these two volumes with his whole thing. And his romance with Cosette is just so annoying, I feel so bad for Eponine like girl he's really not worth it. When Cosette and Marius kiss I felt nothing but was distracted by how the gate looks really weird in that scene, I think it was a scanning or printing error. Anyways idk if that's the source material's fault, because I have not read the original I know. I will have to ask my les mis friend. I think they did shorten the Enjorlas/Grantaire "be easy" scene BUT they did put in a shoulder touch (which my friend says is new).
I found myself way less emotionally invested in this. In the last two omnibuses I had parts where I was super emotional, and I geninuely was picking up things that made me see the world in a new light. But here, I mean there's a few. But it's usually when Valjean is on the page, not Marius.
Seriously there's so many characters I do like in this why focus on Marius!

Goes from Marius falling in love with Cosette at a distance to the outbreak of the June Rebellion. Which means that the next volume will both have all of my favorite parts and be incredibly depressing, in the most beautiful way possible. This adaptation is still extremely impressive, and the bonuses at the end of the volumes show just a tiny bit of the research that Arai put into all of this.

Another wonderful volume in this series! I love how many characters we get to meet and the emotion expressed. The illustrations are so beautiful and I am in love with these main characters. I can't wait to read the final volume!
