Just when Kou Reirin has gotten the dysentery outbreak in the Untouchable Village under control, the village chief mysteriously shows up on death’s door. Reirin fights tooth and nail to keep her new friend alive—but it might not be enough to get him through the night. Meanwhile, Shu Keigetsu is all fired up and ready to get her tea party for the Maidens underway. Now that the outwardly meek Ran Houshun has shown her true colors, it’s time to best her in a game of psychological warfare!
Some really excellent, and much needed, character work going on in this volume — mostly for Reirin, but Keigetsu gets her chance to shine as well. I really enjoyed the arc of Unran, and… this may be contradictory to the purpose of the story, but the less Gyoumei and the “love interests” of the story, the better as far as I’m concerned. The story and writing really shines through when focusing on the female/platonic relationships, whether they be positive or antagonistic.
I just love the way this series explores such a wide range of emotions through its characters. This book, in particular, was a standout for Rerin’s character development. Watching them grow, stumble, and find their way made the whole read even more meaningful. I enjoyed it thoroughly.
