For as long as I can remember, I've always wanted to be a writer. A couple of years ago I found the first-ever story I wrote: it was 1987, I was 5 years old, and it was about a pink fish who liked lipstick. It went something along the lines of: 'There was a fish. She was pink. She had lots of lipstick. She liked it. The End.' Riveting stuff, clearly.

From that very simple beginning grew a lifetime fascination for storytelling; never mind that I couldn't read a word until I was 10, I liked writing my stories. Thankfully they evolved and matured beyond a lipstick-loving fish, and I am now proud to say that my debut novel, Enchantment's Deception, has been getting some great reviews - particularly from Goodreads members. It's a dream come true.

I received a copy of this book from my Lovers of Paranormal group on goodreads.com in exchange for an honest review. Disclaimer having been provided lets get on with it.

This is a fantastic world with so many facets and perspectives that there is truly no way to encompass it in a short review. Perhaps the best way to describe it is what it is in the book. A universe worth of possibilities. The sheer magnitude is mind boggling.

Having said that I had a difficult time sitting and reading this book for any type of extended period of time. I believe there were two major factors in this. 1). The format I received the copy if this book in would not allow me to size the font up so this was 500+ pages of some of the smallest font I've read in quite some time. Sometimes I felt like I'd been reading forever only to realize I'd barely made a dent in it.
And 2) the sheer magnitude and the volume of what the author was trying to cover was overwhelming and there were times I felt there was just too much being thrown at me too fast (although don't take this to mean its an action packed novel...it's more of a steady plod) that I needed time to simply decompress or I didn't think I would be able to remember key details. Any one part of this novel could have been its own book and still won the hearts of its readers but all together it almost seemed like the author was try to tell the storey in fast forward sometimes and I struggled to keep up and keep it straight.

If you are looking for a quick mindless and entertaining read this is not the book for you. However if you are willing to put in the effort to absorb this epic universe then I strongly encourage you to read it. It's a unique world with all your favorite fantasy characters woven in a new way so that you can't wait to figure out how they fit in and the role they play.

This book was SOOOOO out of my comfort zone as far as reading materials go. It was completely different. It took me awhile to get in to it (I think it was because in order to understand the alien dialog you had to read footnotes), but after about 30 pages I was finally hooked. The Red Aliens are fighting the Blue Aliens... then suddenly we're down to the planets surface and we meet a rebelous witch named Sigrid. I fully support Sigrid in all she does. She may be rambuncious and defiant to her peoples ways, but in a society that disregards women and puts them so far below men, she earned my respect. She may have earned my respect, but the other people of her world avoid her like the plague. Her inquisitive nature and carefree attitude leads her on one adventure after another, meeting Fae, Unicorns, Trolls, Minotaurs, Elves and Dragons. This part of the book was excellent (reading about Sigrid). The story keeps flashing to the Alien war taking place over their planet, and I just couldn't get in to that part of the story. At least not until 3/4 of the way thru the book when you finally figure out WHY the aliens are doing battle. Then the whole story comes together in spectacular fashion and then ends, with a few unanswered questions. I hope there will be a sequel.

Enchantment's Deception is an awesome blend of sci-fi and fantasy. It has everything from aliens at war to witches, dragons and a myriad of other mythical beings. It is rich in descriptive detail and the characters have depth.

I read this book in one day and was left wishing I had the sort of imagination that could create what will probably turn out to be an epic series. I hope the follow up book will be coming soon...

Enchantment's Deception is a novel that begins with two different stories, that seem mostly unrelated.

Plot A, which is the main plot of the story, involves Sigrid Medusa, a witch who lives on the planet of Zircondia - a place of magic that is the home of everything we believe to be mythical, from elves, trolls, unicorns to dragons and minotaurs. Sigrid is a troublemaker, who loves to go against the rules of her Elders and be her own person - which is very admirable. Although she does not know why, Sigrid is victim to very vivid visions (ooh, check out that alliteration) of a battle in space, which brings us to

Plot B, the galactic battle between the "Red Aliens" and the "Blue Aliens". Very early on we are introduced to Boston, a member of the Blue Aliens who has a very intriguing personality. As a reader, you are very eager to see how this alien war connects to Sigrid, which is a great way to jump start the interest in the novel. However, this plot, although well-written, is not exactly my cup of tea. Whenever I hear of aliens with "tentacles", it slightly turns me off. (Why does everyone seem to insist that extraterrestrial life would either look exactly like humans or be part octopus?) Still, I did not let this cloud my judgement, because as I said before, I found the novel to be interesting and well written.

The more that I read of Enchantment's Deception, the more that I opened up to it and thoroughly enjoyed the read.

Some things that I really liked:

1) The Characters: I thought that many of the characters were extremely realistic and easy to connect to. I can't think of one character that I did not enjoy. Sigrid is a wonderful protagonist, and an inspiration. I loved that she has an internal battle with good and evil, and good doesn't always win. (That fight is not something you see in female characters too much anymore.) Another one of my favorites was Pendle, the dragon. If anything, I wish I could have seen more of him.

2) The Themes: Enchantment's Deception had some absolutely excellent themes. Through Sigrid's character alone, it is demonstrated that one should always stay true to themselves, no matter what expectations are placed on them by others. That, sometimes, you have to stop asking for permission and act for yourself. The sexism and discrimination on Zircondia also brought up very important topics. I especially liked the major themes developed toward the end of the novel, but I will refrain from going into those, as I do not want to ruin anything.

3) The Mystery Aspect: I have to say, there were quite a few turns in the plot that I did not see coming. One could not say that this novel was entirely predictable, and that is refreshing. It really kept you reading, which is why I am typing this out instead of getting ready for bed.

4)The Translations: This is just a little note, but it is fair to mention that I enjoyed the footnote translations. Considering I read this as an ebook, it really saved my time and anguish not having to go to the end and look for a glossary!

Really, there was only one disappointment that I had. Because the plot was so unique, interesting, and had a lot going on, there are certain parts that I felt the reader does not see enough of, or wrapped a little too quickly. Certain topics I felt a bit unsatisfied on. Of course, this is not exactly a bad thing! It just means that I liked the characters and story enough to want to see more!

All in all, I believe that Averay did an excellent job with the novel, and fans of fantasy and/or science fiction will find a great story they can thoroughly enjoy!

I received this book in exchange for a honest review. (Lovers of Paranormal, r2r program.)

You got Fairies, Elves, Unicorns, Mermaids, Trolls, Minotaurs, Dragons, Aliens, and Witches! Did I miss any? A total fantastical world, that was so much fun and so enthralling to dive into.

The main character Sigrid comes across arrogant in some parts, but she is a head strong woman who is full of sass, and is not at all a boring lady. =P

The other characters are well done, described, like the world itself, in great detail. The twists and plots are super interesting and will keep you involved for sure.

And all this happening while an interplanetary battle is going on between the Reds and the Blues. Never a dull moment. And of-course I'm not going to tell you how it all ends...

(Nine weeks is all it takes for a witch to have a baby? Yes please! LOL)

This is a part of Sigrid's journey for answers, that speaks of how she is viewed by her fellows.
(And I just liked her honesty.)

"You are not like the other witches, are you?" The Troll didn't ask a question, but made the statement. His gravelly voice was shaded with thoughtfulness. It surprised me. The Troll continued. “You do not conform to their desires and ideals of what should belong in their perfect world. We are alike in that respect, I think.”
“We aren't that similar.” And I believed it. We were completely different. He was a Troll, cast out because of his evil acts. I was a young female witch, fighting against the stifling witchmould created by the Elders thousands of years ago. I was trying to show the creatures of Zircondia that beings could not only look different, but have different personalities. But I was not naive. I knew that personally I was considered far less than the other females of the planet; and they were situated extremely low on Zircondia's Ladder of Importance. I was regarded by many to be as filthy and repulsive as the supposedly fictional Trolls and creatures in the Labyrinth.
The crime of women in general is that they are not male. My crime was that I was different and flaunted it.

Let me start off by saying I think the author of this novel is extremely imaginative and the world may have been fully realized to her, but it was very difficult for me to get into the story and follow along with the plot. This may have been because I received it in a format that was not so compatible with a PDF conversion all that well, but regardless I can only review what I have been given.

One of the most exciting parts about reading for me is my ability to imagine the world the author has defined, for me to become part of that place and use my imagination to paint pictures of what I am surrounded by. This book unfortunately takes my imagination and forces in the minuscule details leaving nothing to the imagination. This is not to say the author did anything wrong per se, but when the story is overshadowed with so much detail it makes it difficult for the reader to engage in the world of fantasy; especially when some of those details are unneeded to tell the story.

The story was, at times, difficult to follow. This may have been due to the overwhelming descriptive details, but when I have trouble following the story it makes it difficult for me to get into a book. The editing was also an issue for most of the dialogue throughout. I had trouble following who said what, who was speaking when, and in some cases the phrasing and wording were awkwardly written pulling me out of the story I was already having trouble understanding.

Once I was able to get past the issues with the book, the story itself was good. The premise for the novel is there, I just think the execution was a bit too robust and the editing caused so many issues for me I couldn't really enjoy what the author had to say.

Sigrid is a 99year old witch, she is treated along with her siblings, like a child. Why they have not moved on in life nor married is beyond me. She is despised and feared by many even her own parents. Her siblings have become her caretakers
Sigrid has visions or rather tunes into a war being fought on Batral between the Red and Blue Aliens. She gets drug into Boston's view of this war unwanting and unwillingly.
The read was slightly confusing for me at first but soon I was taken into both Sigrid and Boston's stories. Young Boston a Trooper pilot with only four years of flying. Then in the middle of a heated battle his childhood friend is blown to pieces and he decides to ignore his leader and go after the enemy alone. Meanwhile Sigrid who is currently the "chosen one" to feed the "fabled" Trolls, who were banished long ago for luring witches to their death. Sigrid has a plan and she is taken on an adventure through the forest meeting forgotten or hidden species along the way. Making alliances and friends who know she is doing what she should. That even if she is unsure she is fullfilling her destiny. Her sister Jeanette surprised me the most. So much happens in this book you could give away the entire story just touching on the points. It was an epic adventure.
If there is a sequel I will read it.

This book is not for the impatient or unimaginative. :)

I received this book in exchange for an honest review.

If you're the kind of person who loves to be introduced to new worlds, new characters and a whole new way of looking at things, then you're going to love this book!
If you're simply a fan of Fantasy, you're going to love this book!
If you're a fan of Science Fiction, Space stories, you're going to love this book!

Amber has created her own very unique universe in which her characters inhabit. They are characters that have true personality, far from being 2d characters that just sit on the page, they truly come to life in your imagination!
Enchantment's Deception is a book that will wow you with it's thoughtfulness, the depth of emotion and the sheer thrill of reading. Once I picked it up I just couldn't put it down, and it's just left me wanting more more more!!

I personally loved the fact that the lead character Sigrid is a character of her own type, she's not your stereo typical heroine, she's not a stereo typical anything.... One minute you like her, and then you're thinking how annoying she is, but then you like her again. She's a complex character that you really do get a good feel for throughout the first in what Amber plans to be a 5 part series.
I rally enjoyed this book and I would reccomend it to anyone who simply enjoys a good read! You won't regret the time spent!

R2R: Enchantment's Deception

(I received a free opt, in exchange for a review)

Welcome to the world of Zircondia, where there are the Blue aliens fighting to Red aliens, where witches control their own stories and where we met Sigrid, the second female witch of a family who has no use for. Her older brother and sister become her family, since she cannot possibly be of any service to her parents. But, Sigrid is a curious person and she is on a mission to meet the Trolls, since she has entered into your time, where she is The Chosen One, to feed these beasts, from a distance. Since female witches are not suppose to use their magic, Sigrid is defying the Elders and trying their patience. There is much talk, of how to get rid of her, but she slips unnoticed, to meet the legendary Dragons. Nothing is as it appears.

'I felt my energy bleeding away, draining with the consumption of my history, and my thoughts became scrabbled and distorted. I wondered hazily if one of the witches had arranged for this to happen; a neat and tidy way to eliminate the life of the planet's most hated troublemaker.'

What a great world this author created. Interesting use of folktale and incorporating it all together, into a perfect blend. Highly recommend!

The only problem I had with reading this book was some of the phrasing and that when I converted the pdf file through calibre, it was at times hard to decipher. I think that the transitions between the different perspectives could be changed a little. In many of them, I had a problem deciding which
transition I was reading.

Other than that, I love the characters, I love the plot, and I am really hoping there will be another book in this series! If you love all things "mythical" .... minotaurs, faeries, trolls, witches, dragons, aliens, etc. I have to say that you REALLY need to read this book! The character development is exceptional, the plot is exceptional, the only problem I had was differing between the shifts in perspectives. I really look forward to seeing what this author writes in the future!!

I received this book for free in exchange for an honest, unbiased review through my Goodreads book club. All thoughts and opinions are mine, all mine.
Sigrid Medusa is a saucy young witch, living on her home planet Zircondia, where women are considered inconveniences who should be embarrassed for being born female. She has a fiery temper, & can't seem to help inviting the wrath of the coven of Elders, who can't wait for the opportunity to enact some sort of cruel punishment for her dastardly deeds.
I loved the character Sigrid - she had a strong, cheeky personality full of flaws, but an intense love for her siblings and friends. This story had it all - unicorns, witches, trolls, Minotaurs, elves, mermaids....the list is quite lengthy. Zircondia was vivid in its detail - the writing was wonderful and captivating. The beginning was a little slow for me, but everything is tied up in the end. This is a loooooong book, so be sure you have the time to invest!

Enchantment's Deception is the tale of two different alien races and along with the aliens live witches. I must say that Averay did a good job with writing this story, it's unique and different. The reason I rated it so low is because I just couldn't get into it. And because I couldn't get into it, I kept getting things mixed up and would have to go back. I don't believe it was because of the authors writing, it was just my disinterest.
I gave Enchantment's Deception a three because it's a number that meets in the middle. While I didn't particularly enjoy this book, doesn't mean someone who likes sci-fi wouldn't. It just wasn't for me.

I received this book for exchange for my honest review.

You have now enter the world of Zircontia where there are blue aliens fighting with red aliens. And where witches are in control of their own lives, unless you are a female then you are an inconvenience to your family.

This story is filled with all types of creatures and is wonderfully written, very detail in the beginning, but once it take off it a great read. It a long story, but a great investment of your time.

This was a great story!

It was a little slow in the beginning but I think that was just because I am not used to this genre. However if all the books in this genre are like this one I would read them all. The main character is extremely complex. Sigrid is amazing! She is a strong, independent witch and a loyal sister and friend. The author pulls you into the story and makes you care about Sigrid and what happens to her. By the end of the story I found myself begging for the next book.

At first I didn't get the whole aliens and witch thing. As the book went along I finally understood it. Its a whole new style of writing. I recommend reading the book not once but twice. When you read it a second time it opens up a whole new world.

Reviewer: Moonwalker

The story is fascinating, yet top heavy. There are so many twists and turns in the plot, it's easy to get lost, but it's worth the effort to stay on track. There are three distinct plot lines, and they intermingle without warning.

The first plotline consists of a constant battle between red aliens and blue aliens above a planet far removed from the planet of Zircondia, where most of the action takes place. These battles take place predominately in the mind of Sigrid, the main character. The reason for them doesn't become apparent until most of the way through the book. It's distracting as well as confusing until the big reveal, when everything falls into place, and makes total sense.

The second plotline consists of the daily lives of a trio of sibling witches. Stanford the brother, and Jeanette the sister are ever-present, but the tale is told through the eyes of the youngest, Sigrid. Her parents treat her as non existent, so her siblings basically raise her. She is a chubby outcast with massive character flaws who gets up to all sorts of adventures that are forbidden by the powers that be. You can't help but admire her courage and spirit, in spite of the fact that she is completely unapologetic about her troublesome nature. During her ramblings she spends a lot of time in the forest, where she isn't supposed to go. While there, she makes friends with characters that aren't supposed to exist, such as elves, faeries, trolls and minotaurs.

The third plotline is an intrigue where Sigrid finds out that there's been a seven thousand year old injustice perpetrated by the Elders, who govern the witches on Zircondia. Females have no say about anything on this planet, where characters live for thousands of years. Only male witches are allowed to use their powers as they wish, but Sigrid uses her powers anyway to uncover the truth about why witches have been disappearing for millennia. She literally risks her life to right the wrong done by
those in authority.

I have only one complaint. There's a good deal of contradicting information. Witches are not allowed in the forest, yet contingent plans exist for those who do go in. Sigrid is not allowed to go into the forest, yet relatives give her unicorns, who live in the forest. The unicorns are a free race, but Sigrid owns some of them. Although she loves them and treats them well, I don't much care for the idea of unicorns being bought and sold like horses, although they are obviously sentient beings.

There's some great dry sarcastic humour all through the story. It pops in and out when least expected. The languages that the author Amber Averay has created for her characters, is impressive. It's an excellent fantasy read. I thoroughly enjoyed it.
