I got this from EveningHour.com for those who want to have it. This is not at all a one time read. Whenever you feel depressed, read it once blood starts to pace up. My favorite is a poem regarding History, I loved it and then felt it. Brilliant stuff.
Are you asking me "What do I think about this book?"
Well I can tell you one thing that I'm not nurtured with such intellectual to review this books or comment on it.
But There are a few poems really touched and moved me. His ideas and thoughts and his revolutionary modern simple style of writing brought poetry out of the courts of Maharajahs to the common man.
As these were written in the hungry 30's of 19th century, they promise and aspire in giving a better future and a new world to the next generations and pass message that this can be done only by thyself.
This was one of the few books from the Telugu Poetry section of my dad's library that just took my breath away (Sometimes even literally so while reciting those long poems :) ).. Sri Sri addresses many social problems in this book and shows a unique perspective towards the philosophy of life. Its very addictive specially if you are a novice at reading Telugu Literature. The poetry shows panache and yet so crisp and pellucid that I so used to enjoy learning all the Poems of Mahaprasthanam and I ended up memorizing the whole book. Some may find his views extremist but being one myself I found it to be a veracious representation of the world.
i dont have maturity to comment. what these communist people doing always dreaming for another world which never comes into our lives. but ignites fire with words.
_ I don't have any words to describe about this book or how strong impact I felt while reading. It's Revolutionary, inspiring, funny, sad and much more, and yet I feel these words or nowhere near to say how great it is, this is the pure epitome of powerful writing skills of poetry. I'm really proud to call this is in my native language literature.
“Mahaprasthanam,” which translates to “The Great Journey to a New World,” is an anthology of poems that captures a profound poetic journey. I’m not sure I’m qualified to review the book, but I have some thoughts to share from various sources- During the post-war period, young poets sought new styles to express their poetic spirit. Movements like Impressionism, Dadaism, Imagism, Cubism, Symbolism, Futurism, Realism, and Surrealism captivated them. Influences from Russian developments and the International Labour Movement, which championed the working class, served as major inspirations. They were drawn to Marxist philosophy and began writing poetry from a progressive perspective, with Sri Sri emerging as a pioneering and transformative figure. This book demands multiple readings to fully appreciate its depth and enduring relevance. It remains a timeless masterpiece.

This book Mahaprasthanam by Srirangam Srinivasarao aka SriSri , is a collection of poems concentrated mainly about the difficulties faced by the poor who sacrificed their lives for the benefit of rich(capitalist) who try to rob the poor and demand them of their hardwork. This book approves and reflects the Marxism. Few of them are gems! I personally liked saisava geetam coz it reflected on the corruption and castism children are growing in and eventually following them..as Nehru said "The children of today will make the India of tomorrow ".. The language is not so simple and at the same time not very complex.. Poems are not soft sweet words but are harsh facts describing the difficulties of poor and an ordinary person who is stuck between hunger, disease, lack of employment and dead wife whose funeral is still due to his poverty. The poet trys to say us that the poor, common suffering human has to continue to sacrifice and struggle in order to reach that promised world of eternal happiness without any capitalism.
Like someone said "Sri ante amrutham,Sri ante visham Srisri ante kavitvam"
My favourite poem was Desa Charitralu where he presents human history in a refreshing and thought provoking way.And like all Srisri's works, the words used capture the reader's attention. And like all Srisri's works the reader is left either intellectually stimulated or sombre. His poetry makes one feel lucky to be born a Telugu person just so that we can read his works.
no matter how many times you read and reread still refreshing and amazes you with the way of putting simple words yet making underneath statement of world.,at times giving the goosebumps at description of mankind of world history in 5,6 lines while heart jumps with joy at how he describes children with such innocence and purity.
A collection of poems with revolutionary thoughts or at least that make you really think. One book that was very influential in shaping up by social conscientious. Taught me life, to live, to let go, and to care. One I would carry with me all my life.
The book “Maha prasthanam” by Sri Rangam Srinivas Rao, popularly known as “Sri Sri”, is about the difficulties and hardships of the poor “have nots” who sacrifice their lives for the benefit of the rich capitalists who in turn try to rob the poor. It is mostly an endorsement and reflection of Marxism. The telugu poetry is also in a way revolutionary, in that Sri Sri uses the words used in ancient epics to reflect the exact opposite meaning, thus piercing the heart of the reader. The telugu is also more revolutionary and uses harsh terms and not soft beautiful words. Poetry in his view is not describing the squint of eye of the woman with whom one is enamored, but to describe the difficulties and hardships of ordinary person who is caught between the disease, hunger with a dead spouse and no money to pay for the funeral!
“Maha prasthanam” meaning “ the great journey” , is the title borrowed from Mahabharata, where the Pandavas at the end of their life, travel to higher worlds and face different difficulties on the way to complete their journey to the heavens. Here also, Sri Sri says, to the poor and suffering, that they have to sacrifice a lot more in order to reach their heaven of human equality and there are no “haves and have nots”. One of the poems is “jagannaatha Chakralu” . It is a belief among hindus that falling under the huge wheels of the humungous chariot of Lord Jagannatha to die is a way sure to attain moksha. Similarly, Sri Sri brings out the sentiment that the poor, common, suffering human has to continue to struggle and sacrifice today, shedding his blood, in order to reach that promised world of eternal happiness where there is no capitalism.
Every social animal over the planet earth is simply bound by the rule of currency and ruled by that itself nowadays, but when i was highly influenced by my telugu sir even though at the age of 17 i did'not know the true meaning of those words for the first time when i read but upon reading it for many number of times i could really understand the true essence of the great writer where one human can stand for the other when really in need was depicted in the imaginary sense while reading only, and it created such a stance in me that you don't need a status to help someone, being human is the only influential reason you can help others. I can say it in short that a socialistic view of life from a revolutionary writer TO INSPIRE,IMBIBE n INDUCT more about the rule of nature for helpless....
Introduction read as poet felt all the pain in the world as his pain and wrote the poems, which I felt justified by the inner meanings of poems. The poems express the pain of workers class or shows the realty of their position. The flow make you feel that brain pumps blood and heart thinks.
Suggested to read with Laghu vivaranalu, as few poems and words are difficult to analyse and understand. The Laghu vivaran should have been given to all chapters which could help 21st century people to understand the context of poems.
True sense of some poems are not understood in absence of context which could make an average reader to understand. The subject is clear but little complex even for Telugu readers.
A powerful, inspiring and revolutionary book inthe phase of thelugu literature. The format was vachana kavitha. The lines in the poems bring out a great social responsibility in the readers heart. A new era book. I t was built with communist ideas. But very helpful for a common man. A great respect for Srirangam Srinivasrao garu. Many inspire with actions, Some inspire through habits and few insipre with words they speak and write. And SriSri garu one among those few. THis book is a great example why he was called him as "Mahakavi".
This book shaped my child hood quietly but effectively.
To those who scream bloody hell on the first sight of socialism, it all depends on where on the ladder of the society one stands. No particular "system" fits the world in general and none of these is implemented ideally, like it is supposed to be. We have failed as a world to understand the essence of either socialism or capitalism while still being human. That is the part that needs fixing, and not the system by its definition or the intention behind it.
