The Kingfisher Illustrated Horse & Pony Encyclopedia by Sandy Ransford is a fantastic gift for children who dream of having a horse or pony of their own. There is a clear introduction to the horse followed by chapters explaining horse and pony care, riding lessons, and breeds. The encyclopedia is packed full of gorgeous photographs of horses and ponies -- showing how they look, what they do, and where in the world they are found. And of course every horse lover wants to ride, and The Kingfisher Illustrated Horse & Pony Encyclopedia takes the novice rider from first mount to cantering and galloping.
The pictures alone make this book worth the purchase. Beginning with the types of horses and continuing on to housing, grooming, feeding, health concerns, tack, riding lessons and then the more advanced training needed for showing and special events, this book gives an informative introduction to anything ‘horse’! Short of going into advanced training and information this has what the average horse hobbyist needs to own a horse, and is quite comprehensive.

But my favorite part was learning about the different breeds illustrated with beautiful pictures. I wonder if I am too old to wish for a pony.
I purchased this book for my granddaughter. It is an outstanding reference for all things horse and pony. It is written in a straightforward easy to read manner that does assumes the reader is genuinely interested in all horses and wants to increase their knowledge base,
