🦄🧚🏼♀️🧜♀️ My Nana and Poppa had a copy of this book for most of my life and it's a probably one of the books I have read more than any other. I once saw a copy in a charity shop and for some reason I didn't buy it, something I regretted almost immediately. When I finally came across another copy a few weeks ago I got it right away.
The cover remains one of my absolute favourites and is painted by an artist called Scott Gustafson. I was obsessed with it when I was younger, and still love it now.
This book has a nice mix of Traditional Stories, Aesop's Fables, Grimms' Fairy Tales, Mother Goose's Nursery Rhymes, Children's Classics (extracts from Alice in Wonderland, Pinocchio, The Wind in the Willows, The Nutcracker and Peter Pan), Robert Louis Stevenson's A Child's Garden of Verses, American Tales, The Night Before Christmas and Hans Christian Andersen's Fairy Tales.
The stories are nice, but it's the art that really makes it. There are sixteen different artists, and their work is still often the main image in my mind when I think of Goldilocks. Lynn Bywaters' illustrations for Snow White are more firmly embedded in my mind than even the Disney film.
It was wonderful to reread this and I like knowing that I now have my own copy that I can flip through whenever I feel like it.
If I could only choose a handful of books to share with a wee child, this collection would be on the list. It not only takes care of several different genres, but more importantly, it combines the imaginative artwork that always stay with young minds.
The book is broken into several sections, so let me take you through each one. First up, Traditional Stories.
GOLDILOCKS AND THE THREE BEARS SLEEPING BEAUTY THREE BILLY GOATS GRUFF JACK AND THE BEANSTALK THE THREE LITTLE PIGS LITTLE RED RIDING HOOD
Great way to enchant the child in all of us. On to Aesop's Fables and then Grimms' Fairy Tales.
Still want more? How about Mother Goose's Nursery Rhymes? Or better yet, an entire section devoted to Children's Classics?
Let's not leave out Robert Louis Stevenson's A Child's Garden of Verses or American Tales. And then to end the book, The Night Before Christmas,
and Hans Christian Andersen Fairy Tales.
I loved them all. The different artwork from the various artists make the stories memorable and I don't think any child, or adult, will get bored when one can choose from so many different selections. Just about the perfect bedtime storybook. Sleep tight.
I used this as a reference book for my Children's Literature college class. This might be a strange use since this book is meant to read to children for their enjoyment but it shows the versatility of the books users. This book will be a great gift for children because the pictures are gorgeous. The format was great for me when I was writing papers for my class. Highly recommended to all!
I liked the illustrations in this anthology more than the selection of tales to include, which didn't seem to follow any particularly methodical criteria, other than perhaps popularity, because it's a hodge-podge of stories by the Grimms, Perrault, and Andersen with folk tales from Russia, adding in a dash of creepy with E. T. A. Hoffmann and a dash of weird cheerfulness with poems... See? Not sure what the criteria was here.
I did like Gustafson's art, however, and especially liked to learn what his vision for Little Mermaid, The Frog Prince, Cinderella, and Snow White was like.
This anthology was a baby shower gift. I love it so much! It has traditional stories like sleeping beauty, Aesop’s fables, a selection of Grimms’ fairytales, some Mother Goose nursery rhymes, some other classics and American tales, Hans Christian Andersen fairy tales, and even has the night before Christmas. It’s awesome.
Well there’s some really weird stories that have been passed down for lots of generations. The pictures are beautiful. I like having the original stories. I will be reading Pinocchio to my kids next thanks to the small clip that was in this book.
I currently have a first edition of this book, and it has beautiful illustrations in it. I'm not finding this copy online anywhere ..... Does anybody know where I can look it up??
I thought the stories were very nice and really well narrated. The illustrations that went with the narrations were very pleasant to look at too. Even though I am well past my infancy years, I was lost in the world that brought me joy when I was a little girl. This book contains very close retellings of classic stories such as red riding hood, sleeping beauty, and also verses and nursery rhymes like humpty dumpty. It also contains a series of excerpts taken from other classic stories such as Pinocchio and Alice in Wonderland. If you want to sit, relax, and enjoy a treasure of memories and good times, this book is definitely for you and your family.
Breath taking book. It was a gift for me and my sister when I was 3 years old. The illustrations are absolutely amazing and were some of my favorite things to look at when I was younger. This book has so many different tales, from many different sources, including Grimm's, Aesop's, and Mother Goose. Some of the tales are well know, such as Cinderella or The Ugly Duckling, but it also has stories I have never seen anywhere else, like The Nightingale and Br'er Rabbit. This book still captivates me, even today, and I HIGHLY recommend this book to everyone, children and adults.
A beautiful collection of some of the Grimm brothers' stories, Aesop's fables, Hans Christian Anderson's stories, excerpts from classics such as Alice in Wonderland and The Wind in the Willows, this book covers the gamut and introduces young people to a plethora of famous imaginings. The illustrations feature sixteen illustrators and all are beautiful.

This is a fairly typical book of excerpts of classic literature, abridged fairy tales and well-known children's verses. The stories are a good length for bedtime. The real beauty of the book is in the detailed and colorful illustrations.
My Grandparents gave this book to my brothers and me for Christmas one year. I enjoyed the stories but I loved it the most for the pictures. This is also the book that every Christmas Eve my Dad would read The Night Before Christmas out of.
I didn't know what the cover looked like, since I've had this book so long that the cover has been long lost on one of my many childhood moves. I loved the illustrations in this book when I was little and still enjoy reading the stories and looking at the pictures!
The illustrations in this book are gorgeous. I've had it since I was a little kid, but it's done nothing but take up space since I was about six. All the fairy tales are really true to the originals, which I appreciate and it has some great literature.
Got this for my children for Christmas. Sat down with it and didn't stop reading until I was done. Lovely collection. Beautiful pictures. My children love it.
