An emotional and awe inspiring true story of two friends who faced so many challenges while preaching Krishna consciousness in Russia. From numerous beatings to imprisonment to confinement in mental hospital to hard labor in labor camps but nothing deterred them from their devotion to Krsna.Very inspiring!

As author puts it in the conclusion "Without faith and determination no one can achieve the highest goal of life". Truly this entire biographical account will make you feel like your own problems and struggles are very small and even in greatest of setbacks, you just need not lose the hope

June 11, 2012This book shows how all these devotees have dedicated their lives to Lord Krishna, and how they have done some many sacrifices for Lord Krishna. We should take example from them. These devotees are the examplary!

All glories to sachisuta prabhu and sarvabhavana prabhu!
Salted bread is a heart wrenching tale of two fast friends who together found their way towards devotion and spirituality moving on their chosen path hand in hand till the very end.
This book describes the many challenges and atrocities that the early soviet devotees had to endure and their sheer determination in spreading the teachings of lord chaitanya and srila prabhupad in Russia during the communist rule against all odds.
The story of sachisuta prabhu and sarvabhavana das is of extreme human resilience and diligence. Their service to their spiritual master and to all the future devotees of Armenia and Russia is a penance which is equal to that taken by great devotees like tukaram maharaj etc in their times.
I recommend this book to anyone who wants to read the history of the Soviet Union, or about the history of communist rule. It describes in detail how the citizens of the USSR had no rights to practice any religion. It describes how churches were raided and turned into public toilets, how preaching or distributing any religious text could land one straight into a prison. So much so that even owning a typewriter required obtaining special permission!
The best highlights of the book are the bhagvad gita verses written at the start of each chapter which describe the particular situation in that chapter. There are many coloured photos of the demonstrations held in USSR at the time and the letters exchanged between devotees.
I must say that it would have been of great interest to the reader if dates were mentioned throughout the book and also the ages of the main characters. It forces us to calculate going back and forth the few places that mention the years and ages and at times leaves us to guess the age of the characters.
It would also been very helpful if the law regarding religious rights of people in the USSR at that time had been clearly written in the book so that the readers can view the story in the right context. I had to Google alot on my own. The book is also written in a preachy style with a few pages in between the main plot dedicated to the whole pastime of lord nrisimhadev and prahlad maharaj. This was a bit of a drag to read for someone who already knows the basics.
All in all a must read for anyone who is practicing Krishna consciousness and for any history buff!!

It's an amazing book about how two friends came into Krishna consciousness. The last few pages brought tears in my eyes it was painful to read how devotees suffered just for the God. Hope people understand the message of this book.

I would like to thank the author so much for sharing his experiences and giving us a chance to know about two such wonderful souls who gave their very life and soul for the sake of God and Srila Prabhupada's movement. Anything I will say won't be enough. This book was such eye-opener for me and I realized how insignificant my so called problems are. It made me cry so much. Two best friends...Indeed best friends, even from spiritual point of view, they gave each other Krishna Consciousness, stood by each other in the worst of times, just thinking how they had to be separated in the cell makes me cry. This book is real history, what actually happened in the USSR. I can say sooo much about it...but it feels I wouldn't be able to do any justice to it.

Everyone has to read this book.. Must Read.. I pray to Lord krishna & Radha Rani to make their Krishna Consciousness forever... This is one of the most emotional book I have ever read.
