1980: Billy 'Kid' Glover is seeing things in triplicate and the doc prescribes a rest cure. When he returns to Yorkshire, 'Vienna' is on the radio and, although subtle, there have been some changes. The seventies have given way to a new decade and the young folk of the old town are waiting in the cold for the opportunities that might come with it. The change is slow and not always welcome. The pits are being closed and the police can't catch the Ripper. But Ziggy Hero, David Bowie impersonator and ghost rider is planning a gig. He will prove that some things really are worth waiting for. Sex, drugs and ropey Harland Miller's unconventional rites-of-passage novel.
This book had been hyped by a friend but it failed to live up to it. It could have been written by me about my life in Wigan on the dole in the 90s. i.e. not something worthy of a novel. A slow story punctuated with moments of violence and nothing really of interest to me. I did like the very real characters however
I thought it was OK until half way through. It became apparent that the subject matter wasn't being done justice and that the plot development was struggling to keep up with the early promise.Stylistically it was promising but I'm sad to say that this was only half the book I wanted it to be,sorry.
