NAOS A Practical Guide to Modern Magick

Rate this book
Naos- A Practical Guide to Modern Magick is a principle text within the Sinister tradition which outlines the path from Initiate to Master according to the teachings promulgated by the Order of Nine Angles. Along with several other classic texts, it forms the corpus of writings which the practitioner can utilise in order to advance along the Sevenfold Way and come to realise their unique personal Destiny. The New Edition is presented as an organised and coherent alternative to the previous manuscript which has, until now, been left as it was originally made available.

I have an original version of this, released through Coxland Press back in the early 1990's. At that time this work was part of the underground occult community and probably unknown outside certain circles.

In some ways it is a vastly different work from other occult guides. In other ways it is very similar.

Set in two parts: External and Internal Magick, and with substantial appendices, the book asserts the philosophy of the ONA (Order of Nine Angles) and was, at the time of initial publication, intended to be released alongside The Black Book of Satan and The Left Hand Path Dictionary. BBS was indeed released around the same time. As far as I am aware, the LHP dictionary was never released, though aspects of it did appear in certain issues of Fenrir, the House Journal of the ONA.

This substantial work is ideal for the lone sorcerer/sorceress. It offers self-initiation and guidance on pathworking alongside semi-unique descriptions of a Tarot deck (that differs from the Sinister Tarot that was released a few years later).

There are in-depth teachings on the ONA's Star Game; a seven boarded 'game' that can be used in a magickal setting to create change, but that also develops one's understanding of human psychology in a symbolic form. The game is however quite complex to learn just as a game, whilst magickal application of the game is said to assist the initiate in personal development leading to a greater understanding of oneself and the cosmos.

Other chapters include the Internal Adept Rite (a 3 month solo retreat in nature) and Entering (note, not Crossing) the Abyss.

External Magick is the second section of the book and covers subjects such as Frenzy Magick, Visualisation, Sexual Magick and Model Magick, as well as a small section on the Dark Gods of the Sinister Tradition and a ritual entitled The Return of the Dark Gods.

The chapter on Esoteric Chant provides the basic (gregorian) chants (in early notation) of the septenary spheres and some great guidance on sound magick in general.

For anyone interested in magic(k) this is a great book that offers alternatives to the usual qabalistic type of magic repeated regularly in so many books.
