Ra's Chosen #1

Soul Hunger

Rate this book
Book one in the Ra’s Chosen series.

As one of Ra’s Chosen warriors, Mehen must protect mortals from the undead who hunt them. Gifted by the sun god Ra, Mehen has never struggled with the task—until he saves a woman from three undead, and finds himself in need of saving. Something about the woman stirs him, and he’s consumed by his need not only for her body, but also her blood.

Blythe may have been saved by the mysterious man, but her reaction to the feel of his arms around her and the way his eyes wander to her neck don’t make her feel much safer. When she’s taken to his headquarters against her will, she finds herself a prisoner. But when he unleashes passion unlike any she’s ever known, she realizes she’ll do anything to stay imprisoned.

But Blythe is not who she seems. And Mehen finds himself in the fight of his life to save the woman he loves from the evil that yearns to possess her.

Pretty good book and nice start to the series. Ra is the Sun God. His chosen are a group of hunky vampires (living in our time). Their mission is to seek out his enemies 'the undead' and kill them. Mehen is their leader. While on patrol, he rescues Blythe and they have an instant attraction for each other. He is the 1st of his men to go through mating heat...and this sets up the rest of the series for the others to find their future mates. I liked all the guys and their sense of humor. The suspense was okay and the love scenes were hot. I now have the rest of the series on my Kindle.....

Despite being intrigued by the use of the Egyptian pantheon- and being free... dnf.

Once again we find someone leaning heavily on the Whedonverse vampire mythos and a plethora of other paranormal romances out there where a cadre of supernatural warriors hunt down the evil other vampires. I couldnt shake the feeling that I was reading plagiarized material- even though I wasn't.

The hero had promise with his uber possessiveness- not usually a bad thing for me- but he felt too Kenyon-Ash wannabe with his brooding 6' 8" frame and bmw motorcycle riding and the heroine? Another "something special about her" Bella that nobody has ever come across before. Combine that with amateurish dialogue- I was out before a quarter of the way through.

Good idea, but lacking in fresh blood- literally.

I'll give this 3.5 stars. This is my first for Chenery and I can say that I both loved it and was a little disappointed.

Mehen is an Egyptian warrior to the Egyptian god, Ra. I thought this made for an excellent story line because, lets face it, you don't read much about Egyptian anything in the romance category. Or, at least I don't. Mehen is the leader of his band of brothers and together they fight the undead who threaten mortals. All of the men have lived their immortal lives accepting that they will forever be alone. They are not vampires, but the feed on humans as a basis for survival...and that's about as far as the connection goes. Mehen doesn't know it, but he is about to have his world turned upside down.

Blythe is a woman scored. After a wicked divorce leaves her practically destitute, she is working a job she hates just to survive the legal fees. She lives in what I would describe as an efficiency apartment, and considering what she started from, it's a real shame. After leaving work late one evening, she finds herself facing a small group of undead. And like any good romance, Mehen The Delectable Warrior, swoops in to save the day.

My issues with the story started pretty early on. The first being language. This is what I can only describe as a romance attempting to masquerade as erotica...and failing miserably. It was chalk full of sex, which was fine. Most of it was well written, just poorly executed. Example: At one point while they are in the shower making love, Mehen uses one hand to lift her, then starts kissing down her neck. The next sentence just jumps into "And the other (hand)lifted..." etc. That wasn't the first time I had to reread and piece together what the author was trying to tell me.

The biggest oopsie was during a scene with the rest of the brothers. They were sitting down to a talk and I turn the page and...it's missing! Poof! I have not idea what was said and never will. I read on anyway because the story isn't completely unfortunate and had plenty of enjoyable moments and redeeming qualities. It isn't poorly written despite its obvious flaws, and I honestly enjoyed the better half of it. I can say that I liked Mehen, but he was like a woman P.M.S.ing constantly and always "cramping" due to his blood hunger. I swear if I could have I would have forced him to down a bottle of Midol so I didn't have to suffer through another one of his mopey sessions of "I have cramps and I'm starving but I refuse to feed because (insert lame excuse here)." Truth be told, I will go on to read others in this series because they hold promise. I actually felt more of a connection with the other brothers, namely Takan, who all seemed more developed than Mehen.

Overall, if you can get past the technical difficulties, it's worth the read.

All of the books in this series are exactly the same, down to the first sexual act of two fingers in the snatch and licking her off. Well, if I don't remember incorrectly, there was one first-time that wasn't that, but really, an okay read, but nothing great, especially not the sex. Monotonous after a while. The only book that I might like is foreseen hunger, but after reading through the first 5 I'm not interested in picking it up for a while.

Edit: I forgot to say, did it bother no one else at all that all of these women gave up their lives immediately as soon as they got together with their guys? How do they go from independent women to happily staying cooped up at home with nothing better to do but cook, gossip, and nag at the single guys in the home? Staying at home with nothing to do is not all it's cracked up to be. I don't understand how they could possibly be happy with giving everything up, all of them quitting their jobs and their families. I mean, what's wrong with working during the fucking day? The undeads are sleeping anyway, so it should be safe enough for them to have other things to do besides wait on their husbands, right?

This is book one in the series of Ra's Chosen. The story is very unique and creative. I really enjoyed it. It just seemed to focus more on the physical side of the relationships and missed out on a chance to really get in depth with the characters.

I loved the Egyptian plot line. I hope that there is a second soon. It seems to me that authors continually get better so I believe that I will like the 2nd more.

Blythe knew she was running into a trap. There was no exit at the end of the alleyway, but that didn’t stop her from trying to run. Her fight or flight instinct had kicked in and flight ended up being the big winner. Doing her best to run in heels, she took off down the alley and prayed that someone would happen to be there who could help her.

She skidded to a halt before she reached the back of the alley. Another man stood there, and from the evil grin on his face, he had to be with the other two who had now moved in behind her. Blythe wanted to scream for help, but she had never been a screamer and there really wouldn’t be much point. It would be a waste of breath. No one would hear her. That didn’t mean she would go down without a fight, though. As the men inched closer, hemming her in, she pulled the strap of her purse off her shoulder and put her head through it so it hung across her chest. She then slipped off both her shoes. Not as spiked as stilettos, they still had a big enough heel to do some damage if she could manage to hit one of the three men with it.

A cold sweat ran between her breasts. Blythe slowly turned in a circle waiting to see which one of them would strike first. As they moved in closer, she could see their eyes. Something didn’t seem right about them. To her, it looked as if nothing was behind them, that their souls were gone. Even though the men grinned with sick anticipation, their eyes remained emotionless and flat.

One of the men opened his mouth and gave Blythe a good look at the sharp fangs he had. She stumbled. This caused the three to edge even closer. When she looked at the other two, she saw they also sported fangs. Apparently she had been singled out by a group of wannabe vampires, because there could be no way those fangs were real.

To try and keep them back, Blythe brandished her shoe menacingly at them. “Get back.”

Just as one of the men made a grab for her, the roar of a motorcycle filled the alleyway. Distracted by the sound, Blythe looked away for a split second, which her attacker used to his advantage. He wrapped his hand around her upper arm and pulled her against him. She struggled to free herself, but it didn’t do any good. His other hand snaked out and grabbed a fistful of her hair. He yanked her head painfully to the side while his fake fangs started to descend to her exposed neck. Blythe whimpered in fear.

The thundering roar of the motorcycle grew deafening as it shot past Blythe and her attacker. After that everything happened fast. One minute her attacker had been about to sink his teeth into her neck, and the next, he gave her a rough shove to push her away. Blythe could only stare in horror when her attacker’s body jerked and seemed to start to decompose before her eyes. The stench coming off him almost made her retch, but she couldn’t tear her eyes away. In what seemed like a matter of seconds, her attacker disintegrated, leaving only an empty pile of clothes on the ground.

Looking up, she searched the alleyway for the other two. Now that their companion in wannabe vampirism had gone poof, they had focused their attention behind them. Blythe gasped. At the back of the alley, sitting on a flashy blue and white motorcycle, she saw a very large man. He turned the motorcycle’s engine off and with one fluid movement got off the bike. The two men hissed and bared their fangs as he pulled off his helmet.

Blythe’s jaw dropped. Now that he stood, she could see he had to be over six and a half feet tall, his large body all muscle. She could easily see the large muscles in his thighs bunching under his jeans as he walked toward her remaining attackers. Blythe’s eyes widened when she realized he held a sword in his hand.

Like a warrior of old, he swung the sword in front of him with natural skill. As the weapon arced in the air, the two wannabe vampires hissed and then went on the attack. The motorcycle guy stood his ground and waited for the others to come to him. The fight didn’t last long. As soon as they got within reach of his sword, he swung it toward the attackers. The first one took a sword cut across his chest, while his buddy took one across the throat.

Like she’d hit rewind on a scary video, the two quickly decomposed like the first, leaving only a pile of clothes on the ground to attest that they had been real. Ready to gag, Blythe looked up to meet the gaze of her rescuer. At least she hoped he was her rescuer. He still held the sword in his hand as he advanced on her with slow steps. Her breath sawed in and out of her lungs as she started to back away. He must have noticed her staring at his sword with no small amount of fear, because he slowly reached behind his head and sheathed it in something concealed under his jacket. He then held up his hands while he continued to walk toward her, smiling. Seeing he also had fangs, Blythe did what any sane woman did when her brain decides she’s had more than one too many shocks in one evening. She fell to the ground in a dead faint.

I think:

I really like reading this book. I's a romance-fantasy kind of book, sorta my style. I love the storyline and every character's traits. To be honest, I thought it would be boring but I found that the story is full of twists and turns. And this story is a must to be read.Soul Hunger

Mehen is probably the most frustrating warrior I have read about thus far. While I understood his hesitation in accepting Blythe as his mate, he completely went about it the wrong way and suffered for it more than necessary. To make matters worse he didn't even talk about it to anyone, not even Ra, who had planned everything out to the last detail when he told his Chosen that they were all destined to have a mate. They make this point about 75% into the book but, COME ON! Mehen, get a grip on yourself! Blythe was more than ready to accept their fate, after some convincing and time with the others, but at least she didn't go out to test the limits of their bond.

After reading the above paragraph ^, I'm sure you are thinking that you should not read this book. Despite Mehen being a dumbass, the book was rather good. It gave a new perspective on vampires and was intriguing to learn about some of the Egyptian cultures (doesn't go into deep detail, but you still learn a few things).

I first got this book back in October 2013 and I re-read it to refresh my memory after I got the rest of the series in Dec 2013. I originally gave this book 5 stars probably because it was so different from other vampire novels I've read and I found the back story intriguing.

After reading it a second time, however, I give it 4.5 stars. While it is new and inventive, I found some of the dialogue a little…"childish", for lack-of-a-better-word. I believe the author was trying to make it sound more 'lifelike' -- meaning I could see this in a script for a movie, play or TV show. I think you would have to be really engrossed or familiar with the characters before you and chuckle at some of the jokes and puns they make. I'm currently reading book 4, Akori's story, and I am at that stage or very close to understanding the characters. I have only just started it so I don't know how I feel about him yet, but the others that are already mated -- Mehen, Set, & Denger (<3 to Denger) -- make it funny when Akori, and I think Kysen, make it seem like they can defy destiny and not get mated. *They literally laugh their butts off at the idea).

ANYWAY, this book, and series, is fun and interesting and I say is it worth the read.

Bk1: Should Hunger (Mehen+Blythe) -- (finished)
Bk2: Mate Hunger (Set+Desiree) -- (finished)
Bk3: Longed-For Hunger (Denger+Nyx) -- (finished)
Bk4: Embrace the Hunger (Akori+Jordan) -- (currently reading)
Bk5:Reincarnated Hunger (Kysen+Cena)
Bk6: Foreseen Hunger (Takan+Falon)
Bk7: Ra's Hunger (Ra+Shanda) -- *Can't wait to read!!!*

Can love really conquer all between woman and man, even when mortality threatens to separate them in end? Or when the gods of good and evil blur the lines even more?

One of Ra’s chosen, Mehen, leads his fellow warriors in the fight against the undead and the protection of mortals. He’s lived hundreds of years knowing what his duty entails and has accepted the loneliness that comes with it. That is, until he saves a feisty young woman from three undead and suddenly his emotions, desire, and bloodlust kick in to overdrive. When he begins to crave more blood than he should, develops a sense of protectiveness for Blythe that borders on ridiculous, and when Ra refuses to answer his calls, he knows he in deep trouble.

Recently out of a bad marriage, Blythe trusts no man and is enjoying her sense of freedom, despite her financial hardship. When Mehen roars into her life on his sporty motorcycle all muscle, might, and pig-headedness, she’s not sure she’s ready to fall for his good looks and easy charm. It’ll take a whole lot of effort on his part to break through her barriers and win her heart.

I really enjoyed Soul Hunger. The characters were easy to fall for and the action grabs you right from the start. The secondary characters really give depth to the plot and open the door for future books. I couldn’t help but feel jealous of Blythe. Who wouldn’t want to be a lone female in the secure headquarters of six gorgeous warriors chosen by the sun god himself? Lucky girl. There were only a few editing mistakes (missing words) that caught my eye and some of the diaglogue seemed too wordy or mechanical at times. There were a few times when I wanted to throw something heavy at Mehen’s head, but other than that, I enjoyed every page from beginning to end.

If you’d like to see one lone woman take on half-a-dozen brawny warriors and have them practically eating out of her hand before she’s through, then pick up a copy of Soul Hunger. It’ll leave you hungry for the next story in Ms. Chenery’s creative and entertaining warrior series, Ra’s Chosen.

This is a start to what looks to be a very good series. This book had me hooked from the beginning. I like the background to this series and the Egyptian theme is a good one.

I haven't read an action book by Marisa but I think she did a good job.

I enjoyed the heroine Blythe, she was funny, smart and courageous. She handled herself admirably with the circumstances she was put in. She was a heroine you could easily be friends with. There where no games being played here. She wanted that dumbass Mehen and she fought to have him.

Why am I calling our hero a dumbass - that was because he acted like one throughout the book !!!!!!.

Due to his constant running away from Blythe and not fighting for her I did not get the feeling that he really wanted her for her. It felt more like because they where destined to be mates he had to feel possessive towards her - love not so much. The romance was missing, yes, the attraction was there but the build up to love not so much. Maybe if he showed more love towards her or showed that he really could not be without her or live without her, I would of connected more with him.

It is not often that an author writes a hero I do not fall for but with Mehen it was hard for me to love and connect with him.

As I said this is a good book, I just need more from Mehen which I did not get. Good series I cannot wait to read Set's book.

First off let me just say that I loved the concept of this book. The whole Egyptian thing was awesome. I love watching the history channel when it does Egyptian history.

With that said, the dialogue was corny as hell. It could have been a lot better written. I was cringing on some parts and wanting to laugh out loud because the dialogue was just....::shakes head:: bad.

The characters weren't all that well developed. Except for a few because they played bigger rolls. Such as Takan, Akori, Set. Akori, because he was the womanizer. That made him stand out IMO.

The plot could have played out better. The problems were solved way to fast. Everything just kinda got fixed too quick. I wanted it to drag out a little. Maybe have a little more action.

Speaking of action, the author isn't a good action writer. All i'm saying on that.

I gave it two stars instead of one because I liked the whole GOD's concept and the Egyptian stuff, the little bit it had.

This book's similarity to others in the same genre made it a bit boring, but also a fast read. Skipping long details was easy because they were exactly the same in other books - bad vampires vs good vampires, 1000s-year-old "good guys" who lack a love-life, group of guys who each will find their mates within the next few years...

Big question... how the heck does one carry a khopesh in a scabbard??

What annoys me about this genre is that it's totally ridiculously unrealistic that these guys find their destined mates all at the same time. That's what I enjoyed about the MacKenzie Vampires series by Nina Bangs, her heroes found mates from completely different eras. This is not the case here.

The plot twist... ugh, really? And I think the whole "friendly but close-mouthed god" thing is totally overdone. Lots of deus ex machina in this book. I think that is the danger in writing a god who is actually an involved character in the book.

I think Soul Hunger is a great book. Im always reading different types of vampire books and even though Ra's Chosen are technically not vampires they have some similarities and I just love the many different versions of "vampires" that authors can come up with. This series is mainly about 6 egyptian warriors that are hand chosen by the sun god Ra to kill what in modern day we call soulless vampires or in their case undead. Soul Hunger basically describes Mehen's story (the leader of Ra's Chosen). He is the first of the chosen to ever find his mate (Blythe). It did frustrate me a little that Mehen tried so many times to get away from Blythe when it was plain and simple that they were destined to be together! They go through many struggles and steamy sex scenes but in the end they stay together as planned. Marisa Chenery is one of my favorite Ellora's Cave authors and I Cant wait to read the second book to this sieres.

This book has an interesting background with all the Egyptian mythology, and that carried me along in reading even when I was annoyed with certain elements. Ra's Chosen are warriors who protect mortals from Set's undead, and Mehen, the leader of the chosen, is discovering a new twist to Ra's plans, one that includes a mate. Blythe is trying to make sense of everything the chosen are sharing with her, and no one can deny the connection she shares with Mehen even when neither of them wants it.

The things that bothered me the most about this story are all about Blythe's background and a gift she receives. She seemed to always have what was needed to make conflicts just go away rather than having the story work through things in other ways.

The writing is passable as best, the storytelling generally weak, but it's an enjoyable read. This book is almost more erotica than romance novel, which will be a plus for some and a minus for others; I don't mind either way. The author clearly shares some common pet peeves about romance novels and chooses to defy them (mostly the constant miscommunication that tends to go on) a bit, but doesn't really know how to create conflict otherwise. This is a Mary Sue born and bred, but a decent one, and, if you're in the mood for this sort of thing, this is the sort of thing you'll like.
If I'm able to pick up others in the series for free, I will, and I *might* pay as much as .99 for the one about Takan, but probably not; there's too much competition at this level of barely passable writing.

Good easy read... Characters were ok and seemed to care about each other but I got annoyed by the repeat in the story line. They would come together, he would get scared and run over and over again without any real changes in the situation. I also thought the story was forced with solutions that just magically fixed everything while the charaters did little or nothing to help themselves. Overall worth reading once, but I would love to see the story developed more in upcoming books.

This was an excelent book.
Loved the characters, and I felt the interections between them.
Blythe bonded with the other males, and we could see that she had a connection with all of them.
And about Mehe, well I liked him, but when he bite another woman, knowing that Blythe asked him not to, that if he did it, it was like cheating to her, and he still did it, just to prove a point.
I mean, what the hell?
She asked for you Not, I repeat NOT do it, and he still did it.
Ohh well.

Mehen and Blythe. This was a really good read, Mehen is one of Ra Chosen who fights the undead and she is his chosen mate. The first of the mates for Ra's Chosen. It had a little of Dark Series kind of feel to it, same kind of story line. He finds his lifemate and only her blood will sustain him. But is was still enjoyable.

Enjoyed this book more that I thought I would. This was a new direction from my typical PNR reading and I am glad I found this new series. The characters were likable. I am excited to read the next book to see where the storyline goes. Would recommend it to other PNR readers.
