A short, sparky novel from our mega-selling star author, Jacqueline Wilson. Lizzie has zipped up her mouth. She's totally fed up at having to join a new family and nothing can coax her into speaking to them. Not football, not pizza, not a new bedroom. That is, until she meets Great-Gran, who is even more stubborn than her - and has had a lot more practice!

Jacqueline Wilson was born in Bath in 1945, but spent most of her childhood in Kingston-on-Thames. She always wanted to be a writer and wrote her first ‘novel’ when she was nine, filling in countless Woolworths’ exercise books as she grew up. As a teenager she started work for a magazine publishing company and then went on to work as a journalist on Jackie magazine (which she was told was named after her!) before turning to writing novels full-time.

One of Jacqueline’s most successful and enduring creations has been the famous Tracy Beaker, who first appeared in 1991 in The Story of Tracy Beaker. This was also the first of her books to be illustrated by Nick Sharratt. Since then Jacqueline has been on countless awards shortlists and has gone on to win many awards. The Illustrated Mum won the Guardian Children’s Fiction Award, the 1999 Children’s Book of the Year at the British Book Awards and was also shortlisted for the 1999 Whitbread Children’s Book Award.

Double Act won the prestigious Smarties Medal and the Children’s Book Award as well as being highly commended for the Carnegie Medal. The Story of Tracy Beaker won the 2002 Blue Peter People’s Choice Award.

Jacqueline is one of the nation’s favourite authors, and her books are loved and cherished by young readers not only in the UK but all over the world. She has sold millions of books and in the UK alone the total now stands at over 35 million!

In 2002 Jacqueline was awarded the OBE for services to literacy in schools and from 2005 to 2007 she was the Children’s Laureate. In 2008 she became Dame Jacqueline Wilson.

5 stars for sentimentality.

A cute, quick read.

I suddenly remembered Jacqueline Wilson and just had to read some book of hers.
I absolutely adored her books when I was younger and I think every child should read her books growing up. :)

Jacqueline Wilson was one of my favourite authors as a child. One of the reasons I remember liking her books so much was because she tackled ‘grown-up’ issues about the trials and trepidations of becoming a teenager, as well as the worries and mixture of hormonal feelings we all remember going through. I remember reading her books and never wanting to put them down, not only did they look good with their bright coloured covers and amusing pictures, they transported me into this ‘grown-ups’ world. The story Lizzie Zipmouth is one of the shorter Wilson books I have read, the story tackles the issue of becoming a step-family and the feelings that Lizzie feels as she gives up the familiar world she lives in, to move in with her mother’s partner and his children. The story is well written and an extremely easy read. I feel the nature of the book means that it is more suitable for slighter younger children than some of her other books, so I feel a recommend age of 7-9 years is appropriate.

Lizzie menolak berbicara.

Pokoknya tulisan Jacqueline Wilson hampir semua aku suka! 🥰

Such a sweet story. Jacqueline Wilson is the author who got me into reading when I was a child. Her ability to capture real life issues in an easy to understand and age appropriate way is phenomenal. She has a way of introducing heavy subjects to children in a beautiful way. I have found some of her books in a second hand bookstore and bought them all so stay tuned for more children’s book reviews as I relive my childhood. ❤️

Although it's a easy, funny read, I feel like the plot could have a bit more detail. Lizzie refuses to talk and then after meeting a family member suddenly talks again. I would have liked to see this happen slower. It just seems a bit unrealistic. Perfect for 7-9 aged readers.

2023 EDIT: Part of my 2023 clear-up, of books I no longer like, or am no longer interested in, or remember well as standing out, or find as special anymore, or I otherwise will not miss.

[In this case, it is me letting go of all of Jacqueline Wilson's books; ultimately decided after rereading 'Hetty Feather'. A lot of them have not aged well, in my opinion, or are just baffling, shocking. I cannot abide the author's child abuse-excusing, fatphobic, internalised misogyny-filled, and sometimes ableist books for children. There are often other other problematic tropes and clichés, too. It doesn't matter if they're childhood favourites, or are "cute and harmless". If I can let go of 'Harry Potter', then I can do the same for these books, no problem. Goodbye, Jacqueline Wilson.]

Final Score: 3.5/5

2021 EDIT: Well, that didn't take me long. An half an hour read.

Such a sweet little classic JW tale. About a little girl, her mum, her new stepfamily, a great-gran, and lots of dolls! I like to collect stuff like that, too. Girl power merch. Any collector (and child psychologist) might find 'Lizzie Zipmouth' endearing.

But that line, though: 'Boys are allowed to be girly.' - page 15 (Lizzie is talking about her youngest stepbrother, Jake, who plays with thirteen Beanie Babies and likes tea parties and knitting). Oh boy. How tone deaf and clueless can you be about your own society and culture? I hope Jake is given the chance to grow up to be his full, healthy, happy and safe self.

Final Score: 4/5

Original Review:

'Lizzie Zipmouth' is short. Ridiculously short, at barely eighty pages. And it is so cute and endearing.

Little Lizzie refuses to speak after she and her mum move in with her new stepdad and younger stepbrothers. She wants it to be just her and her loving mum, and is traumatised after her first stepdad turned out to be abusive. So it's not like she's being a brat for petty and selfish reasons, or for no reason at all.

But Lizzie might be able to find her voice again after bonding with her initially-strict step-great-grandmother, who owns a huge doll collection.

Gender roles are somewhat played with. Lizzie is unapologetically girly, even though her mum doesn't want her to be, and her stepbrother Jake owns Beanie Babies. There is nothing wrong with liking what you like, though I think Jake is expected to grow out of playing with stuffed toys. Lizzie's other stepbrother, Rory, still likes football.

'Lizzie Zipmouth', as well as a story about self-confidence, is about helping others, and it teaches children not to quickly judge people. I also greatly appreciate its message of kindness and understanding towards the elderly. It's nice, pink, cute, and can be read in under an hour.

As an intricate addition and edition, the porcelain dolls are cool. It's fine to be feminine.

Final Score: 4/5

Ih suka banget baca yang ini... :D

Sebab, Nenek Buyut punya koleksi boneka banyaaaaak sekali.

Sukaaaa. kecanduan baca buku Madam Jacky nih aku.. :D
Baca buku Lizzie ini bikin terenyuh. Hihihi... Walau sebenarnya ga sedih. Tapi suka banget sama tokoh-tokoh di dalamnya... Terutama Sam dan Nenek Buyut! :D

I remember reading Jacqueline Wilson books when I was younger, and loving them for the way they related to everyday life and issues, in a really child-friendly way. The book is all about a young girl that keeps having to join new families and meet new people as her mum gets a new partner. She becomes so fed up that she refuses to talk to anyone and no matter how nice people are to her, she still doesn't talk, until she meets her new great-gran. The story continues with Lizzie's friendship with her great-gran blossoming through their shared love for dolls, up to the point where she feels able to talk properly again to all her new family and her mum. Lizzie's great-gran is then taken into hospital after suffering from a stroke and it falls down to Lizzie to help her get her voice back and start enjoying life again. It is a very heart-warming story which I think a lot of children can relate to as it focuses on changes in the family and everyday issues whilst growing up.
The language used within the book is clear and concise, with harder words being explained. Illustrations throughout the book are helpful to emphasize main points in the story and for younger children reading it who may struggle with harder words.
Jacqueline Wilson has a way of writing that is comfortable and encouraging, whilst addressing needs that children are facing as they grow up.

Mamanya Lizzie menikah lagi.
Kini, mamanya Lizzie menikah dg Sam.

.

Unik sekali ya tapi sekaligus juga realistis. Menjadi bagian dari keluarga baru memang tdk mudah, apalagi utk anak-anak. Rasa puas dan bahagia Lizzie ketika hidup berdua saja dg ibunya sehingga enggan utk menjadi bagian dr keluarga baru, apalagi tiba2 memiliki 2 saudara laki2, semuanya terasa amat realistis. Begitu pula hubungan Lizzie dg Nenek Buyut.

-hlm. 74.

As a recently qualified speech therapist, I learned so much about situational mutism and aphasia from reading this book. Turns out, people with situational mutism and aphasia are just obstinately choosing not to talk. To get them talking, you just need to pressure them more.

I’m really, really disappointed in this book. I understand it's for kids, but it sends a terrible, narrow-sighted message.

Again I love the fact that JW is tackling sensitive issues that young children may be facing themselves, and again, in this book, she hits on the subject of a parent getting a new partner and then the child having to deal with things no longer being the same.

In this book Lizzie and her mother move in with her mother's new partner and Lizzie now has to deal with step-siblings and sharing her mother with her new step-dad, and she misses their old home and the things they used to do together when it was just the two of them and we see her working through these emotions and feelings throughout the book.

I thought that Lizzie finding solice in her new great-grandmother and playing with her collectors dolls was a sweet addition to the book.

This is another short story, ideal for younger readers, that chronicles the difficulties faced by a young girl as she struggles to adapt to her new living situation, with her mum’s new partner and his children.

As is typical of a lot of children, and sometimes of adults as well, Lizzie clams up completely and the only person she will speak to is Great-Gran, who she manages to form a bond with over their shared love of doll collecting.

And it follows Lizzie as she is able to come out of her shell with a little bit of help and encouragement from Great-Gran, along with a helping dollop of unfortunate events that mean she has to step up to the plate.

A really easy read for younger readers who could possibly see themselves in the pages.

Lizzie finds herself thrust into a new family as her mum moves them in with another new step dad and two new step brother's for Lizzie. As Lizzie is unsure how friendly her new step dad is as previously having some bad ones, she takes to not speaking a word, until she meets Great Gran.

All about learning how to adapt to a new situation and family setting, we see Lizzie grow comfortable and happier especially when she's allowed to express herself properly too with someone who understands and accepts her interests, it was serious, dealing with important topics effecting people everyday in life.

Lizzie Zip Mouth by Jacqueline Wilson

A girl named Lizzie used to have a dad but her Mom got
a divorce and now her mom is looking for a dad.

Lizzie didn't have any brothers or sisters.
But today she was getting some named Rory and Jake
Lizzie was also getting a stepdad named Sam. But Lizzie
didn't like getting one because she was afraid.

Her mum and Sam were getting along so well together but when
Sam was there Lizzie didn't talk at all.

It was time to go to grandmas. When Lizzie got there her
mum an Sam decided to leave her there. Grandma had loads
of old and ancient stuff because of how old she was.

Lizzie Zipmouth follows Lizzie, who has sworn she won’t speak to anyone now that she has to move in with her mum’s new boyfriend Sam, and his two sons Rory and Jake.

This is a nice quick read for anyone who wants to enjoy some of Jacqueline Wilson’s smaller works, whether you are rereading them or younger readers discovering them for the first time. She succeeds at including a range of grown up issues into Children’s stories and making them easy to understand. The only thing I would have liked to have seen more of is helping Great Gran ‘find her voice again’ as this is only covered in a few lines.

Although Lizzie is moving into a new home, with a new stepdad and two step-brothers, she wishes things could have stayed the same - just her and her mum together in a flat, before her new stepdad came along.

So she decides that the best way to deal with the situation is to stop speaking. Despite the family's best efforts to get her to say something, Lizzie remains resolutely silent, that is until she meets Great Gran, in whom she finds an unexpected soulmate.

This is a poignant and often funny book, which looks at ways of coping with a new step-family. The friendship between Lizzie and 'Great Gran' is also touchingly portrayed. Ideal for newly confident readers.

I read this book in one hour! One I am a really fast reader and two it had very big writing and it only had about 70 pages. If you like super quick reads with chunky writing this is the book for you, it was a really nice story where there is a little girl and her mum living together until he mum meets an nice man with two sons, they move into his house but Lizzy doesn’t like it so she decides she doesn’t want to talk to anyone, even her mum! Until she meets the great grandmother and she grows a really special bond with her that she even begins to talk!
