Odd Blood #2

Strange Blood

Rate this book
A new normal?

Josephine Pajimula has settled into being a full time Thrall—a human nanny to an elderly vampire—and living with a bunch of dramatic but lovable vampires. Between introducing her undead roommates to new technology and balancing her human relationships, Josephine has her work cut out for her.

When mysterious supernatural events occur, the obvious culprit has to be Misha, the resident spirit… right? Maybe if Josephine wasn’t so distracted navigating her new relationship with Eadwulf, she could think more clearly. Having a vampire for a boss was one thing, but now he’s also her boyfriend!

Can Josephine figure out what’s causing the strange happenings in Rosalee Castle? What will she tell her family at the dinner table? Is “boyfriend” the best title for the guy who is also technically your “vampire master”? And more importantly… Shouldn’t this vampire bite have healed already?

Strange Blood is the second book in the Odd Blood series featuring diverse characters and creative expletives. A hybrid romance with cozy horror elements and lots of dark comedy. This story contains maybe .05% of spice but is 100% a kissing book, continuing the story of a newly discovered demisexual main character.

Strange Blood is one of those amazing sequels that brings you right back into the fold without loosing any ounce of magic from the first. I was so amazingly fortunate to be able to advanced read this book. Blessed really. I devoured this book in a manner of three days and laughed more than I can count. I distinctly remember shrieking at one point. Because this book is what we do in the shadows but elevated. It's evolved. because it's not just crude humor or vampire butts or a conversation about humanity, it's genuinely funny. The characters are charming and ridiculous without giving me second hand embarrassment. Eadwulf is a himbo with so much emotional intelligence and a side to him that will make you swoon. Josephine is the refreshing main character who is fed up with vampire bullshit but realistic enough to know where her limits are. She is learning as she goes and you learn with her. I genuinely loved the exploration of demi-sexuality at the same time as a realistic slap in the face of hustle culture that disabled humans deal with every day. Would half of this book not exist if Jo wasn't a stubborn, "i'll just take some dayquil and it'll go away", 30 year old woman who doesn't have time to stop? YES! And that's what so brilliant about it because it wasn't frustrating at all. It was done so fantastically that I truly enjoyed it and went "SAME!" a thousand times. As always, #teamAna. Norma is my inner beast. And Misha is a dickhead but he gets some brownie points for this one.
You're going to want to woodcock watch out for this one.

Sweet, funny, and a little dark, this sequel to “Odd Blood” is everything I’d hoped for. Crowley continues to develop fascinating, complex characters - yes, even the himbo vampire Eadwulf has complexity! We get to see these characters grow and change, adapting to a new (un)life, and there are plenty of laughs and feelings to go around. I really enjoyed watching Josephine’s development in maturity, navigating a very different type of relationship for her, and her sexuality. It never felt forced or shoehorned, and equal consideration is given to the major side characters. It’s rare that I genuinely care about the side characters or their motivations, but Crowley gave me a found family I never want to let go.

That bee keeping scene is the boo boo best. More please!

I know Azalea is taking a break and adjusting things so I will adjust my review once the changes come out but I just don’t think I would change a thing. This book was adorable, just as adorable as Odd Blood. Our Himbo Bby Wulf is such a kind and sweet soul. I love that he’s a beekeeper. Jo learned more about herself & her vampire housemates, I adore her so very much. I loved learning more about Ana and Norma is a literal riot! I adore this series so much and can’t wait for book 3!

All the shenanigans readers of the first book have come to expect…and a plot twist! Also…. "fopdoodle". You will understand when you get to that part in the book, lol.

Josephine continues her relatability (to me) in the way she avoids burdening Eadwulf with her health concerns, up until the point she actually *is* "enfeebled". I did the same thing myself when I had c*vd. My nesting partner of the time staged an intervention and took me to the hospital after a few weeks of it. I spent a few more weeks in the hospital, and have long term health issues resulting…(so don't do that, y'all. Don't do what we did and *not* seek appropriate care please).

I enjoyed this book immensely. If you enjoy himbo vampires, shenanigans, ghosts, poltergeists, inept ghost hunters, asexual representation, neurospicy representation, or any combination….you will almost certainly enjoy this book!

I am simply obsessed with this series! Strange Blood picks up where Odd Blood had immediately ended. Upon receiving her bite from Eadwulf, Josephine found herself falling harder for Eadwulf and having to deal with an angry spirit who's causing trouble at the castle. One of my favourite things about this book is how Josephine and Eadwulf's relationship blossom 😭🫶 Eadwulf as always, is an adorable himbo who I love more than anything. I mean cmon, how could you not love this vamp?? I love the charm and humour this book has and am excited to read the next instalment.

I can’t get enough of this series! Azalea’s writing is clever, heartfelt, and well-paced, I truly enjoy every minute with these books. Strange Blood was everything I loved about Odd Blood and more! More character development, more relationship progress, more knowledge about the monsters that exist. I love seeing Josephine and Eadwulf’s relationship change, and I was definitely swooning during one scene in particular but the full cast of characters is just perfection. I can’t wait to read book 3!

ANOTHER COUNTDOWN… but to what?!

The was an amazing sequel! Odd Blood let us dip our toes into the murky waters of Eadwulf and his hive, but this book really pulled us into their scarlet depths.

I loved the way Crowley gave each character depth beyond what they were. This book really let us see Ana, Eadwulf and even Norma with all their quirks, their patchwork of scars they tried to hide, and their interests. It also showed us glimpses of Eadwulf and Josephine as their relationship bloomed.

I wasn’t fully sure what I was expecting. They’d vanquished the vampire Hunter. What else was left but to ride off into the sunset… or moon rising (we can’t risk Eadwulf in the sun)? I was pleasantly surprised by where this story went and am desperately trying not to give anything away. What I will say is this is — just like the first book — definitely worth the read!

The ending… *shakes fist*

I know I’ll be rereading them and any book that warrants a reread is a five star read. Keep your eye out for this author…

A delightful comedy/romance/horror book

Firstly, I received this book as an ARC. Most important this book is fantastic and the second it's out I'm buying the paperback. I don't even think I have the words to do this series and author justice, so just trust me when I say that I recommend this series to all my friends. Run don't walk! 💚💚💚

I absolutely adored this book, from page one when it grabbed my heartstrings and didn't let go! The continuation of Josephine and Eadwulf's love story was everything I was hoping it would be and SO MUCH MORE. There's something that can't be beat about those soft moments when paired with those intense dramatic ones. Azalea Crowley's literary voice and world building absolutely immerses me in the story, in a way very few other novels have.
Her writing of ace spectrum characters is also so refreshing, utterly relatable and real but also respectful of the journey and evolution of this character's identity. You can tell it comes from a place of love and maturity. It's something I personally took a lot of comfort and joy in.
ADDITIONALLY
The vampire lore and comedy was top notch, and the woodcock watchers were hilarious! The drama was also compelling, high STAKES if you will ;) and I love how the conflict in this book was primarily between the main characters, so we got to see all of them grow together. The first book's conflict was so effective for setting up the world & the characters, and this was a perfect follow up.
Needless to say, if you're looking for a perfect Himbo Vampire romance slow burn with comedy drama and just a hint of spice, Odd Blood and Strange Blood by Azalea Crowley are a feast to sink your teeth into.

3.5 stars. Fairly a good story but was disappointed that we don't get a lot of scenes between Josephine and Eadwulf. I like Norma. I felt the other characters were overcrowding the main characters' spotlight like there's too much effort put into trying to get to know everyone otherwise it was a fun read in itself.

First things first of course I enjoyed the book! I will say it leaned more into horror this book than the first but definitely more deeper psychological horror than the general gore and monstrosity of Odd Blood. Norma as usual was a gem and I can never get enough of that silly woman. As usual we have a very interesting and frequently funny take on vampirism and the community around them. Comments on racism, capitalism, working retail, rent prices, and the complexities of family are all present and nailing it. Josephine, our main character, further explores what romance is and means to her specifically, and how does attraction even work (especially when your himbo boyfriend isn’t exactly alive)?! As usual, refreshing neurodivergent and asexual spectrum representation. Expect to watch romance bloom often very comically and with believable couple hiccups (and bees!). Expect spookiness, exes, sex jokes, family gatherings, and elections. Also please I beg you to read the trigger/content warnings, while this book does have cozy romance vibes the horror is not an afterthought in this series! Be kind to yourselves and respect your limits!

And Josephine….GO TO A DOCTOR!

Here is my list of Trigger and Content warnings with the authors as well. The biggest themes other than general vampire nonsense was about an ongoing medical neglect issue, especially for us living in a pandemic world (though the book is set pre-pandemic). I think this could be very sensitive for readers right now.

Heavy: blood, blood loss, chronic/ongoing illness, death/murder, dementia, hauntings, injury/infection, medical emergency, medical neglect, neck wound, negative self talk, occult

Moderate: body horror, concealing (possibly) contagious illness, consent violations (nonsexual), depression, enthrallment/mind control, fever, food shaming, ghosts, gore, low self esteem/self-hatred, memory disorders, nightmares, panic attacks, possession, profanity, PTSD, roommate violence, sexism, sexual themes, traumatic shock, violence

Light: aging parent, amnesia/memory loss (brief), childhood trauma, dieting (mention), eating disorder, emesis (mention), financial trauma/insecurity, medical treatment, microaggressions (the humans), misogynistic language, religion, restraints (brief), seance, slut shaming, starvation, terminal illness (implied)

Strange Blood is an amazing sequel to Odd Blood. I love this series so much that I don't want it to ever end. At least, not their world.

Everything we experience within this book is crazy. For those that didn't feel the connection between the couple? You're definitely going to feel it in this one! Not only are they hilarious, they're sweet and it makes me wanna pair up with someone.

Also buddy reading this book is so much fun. Because you can have a freak out whenever a chapter does something. Which was every chapter let's be real.

I just love Josephine, the Rosalee Park vampires, Carlos, Michelle and Joanne 🤣

I can't wait for the third book coming this fall!!! Please give this series a chance. If you love cozy horror, beautiful himbos, female leads that are finding their strength and funny but equally messy roommates.

While I did enjoy the first book, I am finding myself bored and a bit annoyed with this one. So far, nothing has really happened in this book and I am bored because of that. Second, Josephine keeps doing dumb shit that just makes me frustrated with her. LIke putting her glasses under her pillow when she sleeps, like why would you do that. Also leaving a bandage on a wound for days and just hoping it is fine. This is disgusting and why would you want to risk infection? Also the relationship with Eudwulf that started at the end of the last book has not gone anywhere and it continues to feel like they are just a boss and employee.

Basically I am bored by the story and annoyed by Josephine so I am stopping here.

I truly, absolutely, indefinitely adore Strange Blood and it's returning cast of delightful characters!!!

Strange Blood is a lot more intense than the first book, Odd Blood, and there is more action, more sass, more spitfire attitude, and more adorable lovey moments that are always so endearing!!

I couldn't get enough while I was reading and didn't want to stop, but, like the first book, I will have to wait for book three to continue the story!! I'm willing to wait because this story is worth waiting for!!

I highly recommend giving Strange Blood a read!!!

Gah!! It's so freaking adorkable!!!

Not as many vibes or thoughts as the first book.
Despite this starting off right after the last one ended I was really struggling to reconnect in the first half for some reason. I finally got sucked back in and enjoyed the second half of the story.

Josephine and Eadwulf are adorable. I really love how they are written. They feel like real people. I also enjoyed the more mysterious vibes in this one.

I forgot to write this in my review of Odd Blood but it’s just as true for this book - I adore the discussion questions in the back. They are hilariously fun.

Enjoyable read. Strange blood twists and turns through Josephine and Eadwulf’s budding relationship. However their growing connection is fraught with challenges from vampire politics to Josephine’s mysterious illness. The chapters with Josephine and Eadwolf one on one really shine. The pacing was a bit slow in places but overall it was a solid read. It did leave on a cliff hanger so I am curious about book 3.

This was such a good book, I absolutely devoured it. I ADORE the asexual/demisexual representation - her feelings of shock at realizing what she was feeling was so real, and I just appreciate being able to read my experience through someone else's lens. Also, Norma is amazing - the dinosaur costume???!?! I'm actually dead. And I also appreciate the depiction of not wanting to inconvenience anyone to the point of almost k*lling yourself, cuz damn if that isnt relatable as hell.

Even better than the first!

Strange Blood felt faster paced, picking up right after the events of the last book, but was just as satisfying as Odd Blood and I am loving Josephine's character development.

The tender moments with Eadwulf gave me butterflies while the paranormal occurrences turned me into a bundle of nerves. This cozy horror just hits right with its perfect balance of emotions.

I have the pleasure of being a Beta reader for Az.
This series is so cozy and reminiscent of what we do in the shadows. There is always food, haha, which I enjoy as well as the banter between all the characters. Watching Jo and 'Wulf stumble through their relationship is heart warming. Highly recommend, as always!

the found family dynamic is even more dysfunctional, hilarious, and adorable in the second installment. Eadwulf is equal parts swoony and clueless which makes him the most lovable hero. he’s so patient and understanding with Jo. Jo really spends this book really coming into her own. she’s discovering herself and her new life. crowley do love a cliffhanger tho so beware!

eadwulf is written like how i think elliot from stardew valley would be like if he was a vampire, and i cannot verbalize how much joy that gives me.

and besides that, i love josephine, and i loved how she grew both as a person, but also as someone who finds themself in a relationship for the first time….cheering her on makes me feel like i’m cheering for myself lol
