Cognitive Neuroscience

This text balances experimental and clinical perspectives with a survey of a variety of mental functions. In a conversational style, the authors provide clear, accessible explanations of difficult concepts, making use of analogies and case studies to illustrate them. A consistent structure throughout each chapter defines a mental function and the role of each part or parts of the brain in that function, followed by a discussion of what neuropsychological syndromes say about the cognitive and neural organization of the mental function.

This was the textbook for a cognitive neuroscience course that I took last fall. I found it very unapproachable. The topic in itself is heavy, and the authors have opted for a style of writing that pretty much results in a text that feels like 100 studies merged into one fat blob of text. True, the subject is rich in details, and so is the text. Instead of admiring the effort put into creating such a comprehensive text (or brick), I kept thinking to myself: "The authors hate people, especially their readers."

Interesting topics but amazed at the numerous typos that were a little distracting and at times worrying since this book was introducing me to a lot of jargon, so when I read 'the the' or 'in constrast' or 'upcoming upcoming' or 'signficantly' or 'Goggle', I guessed something went wrong, but in other cases I guessed so only when I didn't get any results when I 'Goggled' 'neocrotical processors' or 'dichaptically'...
Also, the text refers to interesting figures on the book cover?, but I purchased mine without?

I only read the chapters on memory, attention & higher cognition, plus the summaries of all other chapters. Overall, I found it really helpful. I was surprised how much we seem to understand about what's going on, for example where in the brain what types of evaluation takes place, what functions different areas provide in completing complex behavior or how working memory works.

I read most of the chapters except the first two for a cog neuro course. It is pretty approachable in terms of difficulties. The style of writing gives its density unnecessarily for my personal taste.

Really not the best neuro textbook I have read in my time in the field. Would give 2.5 if I could, since it isn’t the worst either
