A comprehensive guide to keeping fish healthy for the serious hobbyist.
A healthy environment is crucial for any aquarium. Fish need more than a tank of water and a daily sprinkle of food to stay healthy, and the fish-keeper is regularly challenged to understand irregularities that can cause trouble.
Manual of Fish Health is a fully illustrated and highly informative reference that concentrates on:
Maintaining a healthy aquatic environment
Recognizing and coping with pests, diseases, parasites and bacteria
Balancing water chemistry so the fish's environment is always healthy The book also includes an A to Z directory of common pests and diseases and a practical guide to their control and treatments.
The expert authors explore the vital aspects of health care for all types of fish, including freshwater and saltwater, tropical and temperate, and pond and aquarium. The clear and concise text is abundantly illustrated with underwater photography, charts and diagrams.
I chipped away at this book, reading here and there, rolling my tired eyes every time the author mentions consulting your veterinarian concerning a health issue with your fish.
Does anyone know a good fish vet?
There is a lot of information here, and this text could be valuable as a reference work.
The sad truth is that many aquarium fish live about two to five years, and many who die in the home aquarium do so because they just don't live that long. I'm a firm believer in the theory that people who rush to treat and dose their fish with all sorts of chemicals and medicines at the first sign of what might be an illness — are doing more harm than good.
In Canada, some common aquarium medicines, such as antibiotics, are no longer available (except through your vet) because people with using them willy-nilly and antibiotic resistance is a real concern — for all of us.
This book does start with 73 pages of "Planning for Health" which outlines the best practices for keep fish healthy and preventing problems. As the old saying goes, a gallon of prevention is worth 125 gallons of cure (?—or something like that).
