I thought this would be one of the classics I would have trouble getting through and that every sentence would be annoingly hard to understand. I was so wrong! The first five pages were a little dull but then I was in for such an insightful and lively study of adolescent angst and psychology it really blew me away. I was completely unprepared to be this moved by this book.
By associating with two ruthless but extremely intelligent boys from his boarding school, Törleß gets sucked into the events of them torturing one of the other boys from their class whom they caught stealing money. Their treatment of Basini is intertwined with sexual abuse and Törleß finds himself more and more fascinated by what is happening to Basini and the boy himself. I kind of hoped for the story to take a different path, but nonetheless I think it was excellently done and not far from the truth of how such spirals take course. A great read!
