I was doubting myself whether I was fair. Started giving 3 (and less) so-so’s to many books that I recently read. Was I becoming too judgmental. If a book can’t satisfy me during the first 50 pages, can it not become better later.
This book is about Iris, woman who murdered her husband, and is set off to prison for the next 18 years. Maximum penalty a woman can get in Canada. Iris is one protagonist, her jail Atlina is another. When you start imagining perfect society, imagine its prison. Atlina is considered to be culmination, majestic accomplishment of the modern architecture. A place from which escape is utterly impossible, placed 70 metres under the ground. Adducted in that way that any sort of malice response, awkward behavior, body position, is instantly recognized and suffocated. Yet, it’s not a materially dark place. Architecturally and digitally was built perfectly – in the end, constructed to inspire to never think again about the world outside, to never want to wish for any other life.
This book is not projection of some utopian futuristic future, nor it really has any whatsoever connections with science fiction. The storyline is really pulsing. It has no elements of horror, it just combines bigger than life things: how we solace each other in this techno world of alienation, where and how we seek comfort and safe ports. Is libra of our decisions just a slutty seesaw now kissing detachments of the modern man: control, fear, coldness and coercion then coming back and kissing warm values like: love, art, sharing and bonding.
And this is why this book is interesting. It’s a battle between a human mind and body versus the inox (stainless steel) purity of this under the ground building. The only connections that prisoners have with the nature are digital pictures from the LCD monitors placed in the dinning hall. When it's autumn, pictures are brown and warm, when it’s winter, snow, birds on the trees, deer eating willow’s bark.
Yet it’s not a book just about architecture and desperation, hopeless futility, like from the Star Trek’s cyborg, 'We are Borg. You will be assimilated. Resistance is futile.'
It’s about human alienation and in this metaphor, what we expect from each other. There are many metamorphosis we do every day, just is it possible to stay true to yourself, is it possible to be who we really are, or technosmose is inevitable. Do we need new super urban, super techno bathed in stainless steel luxury of things, or we need osmosis? Throw techno away, splash your face with pure water, make a balance. Make a contact with yourself.
