Translated from the English version published in January 2006, this book is an introduction to the core Christian doctrines, the historical context in which they arose, and their ongoing importance to contemporary Christian belief and practice.

About the author

Justo L. González, author of the highly praised three-volume History of Christian Thought and other major works, attended United Seminary in Cuba, received his MA at Yale, and was the youngest person to be awarded a PhD in historical theology at Yale. He is one of the few first generation Latino theologians to come from a Protestant background. He helped to found the Association for Hispanic Theological Education and the Hispanic Theological Initiative. Dr González is now on the faculty of the Interdenominational Theological Center in Atlanta.

I read this for my “Christian Theology” college course and always learned something new each chapter! I’ve got a pretty solid working knowledge of the things discussed in the book, but the part I lacked was the historical background and the names of the early apologists who debated about the concepts. I appreciated the introduction to these famous names in relationship to their ideas as well as how they were connected to each other so that I now know who were contemporaries and who built on whose ideas.

Casi cualquier libro que se ocupe de doctrinas lo hará desde la perspectiva de las conclusiones: creemos que esto y creemos que aquello y a continuación adjuntamos una lista de fuentes que apoyan nuestras conclusiones. Lo cual está bien para efectos de consulta, pero no para entender los porqués detrás de los qués.

Esto es lo que Justo Gonzalez hace en este libro, para cada cosa que es en su opinión una doctrina fundamental de la iglesia cristiana, se pone a desenmarañarlas como si fueran hilos hasta llegar a la fuente original pero sin ignorar los nudos y los enredos que inevitablemente aparecen en dos mil años de historia.

En resumen: un libro muy útil a la vez que interesante y sorpresivamente entretenido (para mí, al menos, que me gustan estas cosas) que debería ser parte del currículo de todo cristiano.

Excellent!

You wouldn’t think that a person would be able to write a concise history on Christian doctrine but Gonzalez has done just that. If you have ever read anything by Gonzalez before then you know that his writings Christian history are unparalleled. This book is easy to read and accessible for discipleship programs, church studies, and graduate programs alike. Such a great book. Five stars.

A textbook that I would have honestly enjoyed reading even if it hadn't been assigned (probably would have enjoyed it more actually because I could have read the chapters in their intended order instead of skipping around). It's concise, yes, but also thorough and pretty impartial– González gives fair treatment to every point of view across denominational lines, and the contemporary relevance sections at the end of each chapter were spot on (even though the book is a little outdated now).

In general, this book is well done. I just have to issue a warning about the author's elevation of Calvin, who had feet of clay as much as other reformers or more so. I would not have wanted to live in Calvin's Geneva! More needs to be written on this subject. There was an arrogance to Calvin's spirituality that belies some of the things he wrote. Other than that, the book is readable and discussable in its general overview.

This is a concise, readable synopsis of Christian doctrine and how it emerged. I really appreciate this book. I learned a lot from it and was challenged by its depictions of various topics, including apostolic succession and justification. Gonzalez knows what he is talking about.

Excellent, Enjoyable, Gonzalez at this finest.

Gonzalez walks the reader through the history of Christian Doctrine. What I really appreciate is that it is broken down by doctrine not a timeline. This make the book and the history easy to follow.
