Berlin 1945: The Final Reckoning

Rate this book
A comprehensive history of the last battle of Nazi Germany, this book begins with a study of the background to the battle and a description of events on the eastern and western fronts before the Soviet forces reached Berlin.

The strategic importance of the city to the German war effort and morale is considered, and the reasons why the Western allies halted their advance on the Elbe rather than race the Soviet troops to the Reichstag.

Pendant if at times and definitely written by a pro Russia writer as opposed to most other western histories I have read.

That the Soviets bore the brunt of the fighting in Europe is unquestionable. After all the Germans invaded their country and drive to the outskirts of Moscow.

That the Russians suffered 29 million In casualties is partly because they used human wave tactics and had political officers and politicians who never put themselves on the line, forcing decisions.

Not the way I would like to be fighting a war

I haven't read about Berlin's final days. A great read on the topic. An excellent resource for research and term papers.
