Azalea Sharp just wishes her life would go back to normal. But what’s normal when you’re being hunted by the House of Ravens and spirits are using you as a doorway to another world?
Forced to apprentice to a Shadow Mage she wants nothing to do with, Azalea must put aside the past and join his hunt for a set of powerful relics to prevent a dangerous gateway opening to the Echo Dimension.
But fate has other ideas, and Azalea grows closer to the man she desperately wants to hate. To save the world from an onslaught of destructive magic, she is forced to make a choice: let him sacrifice himself or watch the world burn.
Apprentice is the gripping sequel to Initiate in this new adult urban fantasy series.
Jenny grew up in small town New Zealand on a steady diet of fairytales and fantasy books. She lived in Mongolia for nine years with her husband where they spent the unfrozen months of the year living on the edge of the Gobi Desert mining gold. When she isn’t writing, Jenny enjoys hiking, meeting new animals, and loves to curl up in a sunny corner with a cup of tea, a cat, and a book. She lives in Darwin, Australia, with her husband and their two street cats from Mongolia.

In the second book of the series, again I loved the use of the magic system and the beautifully described world and locations both exotic and mundane and Azalea has plenty of action. There are plenty of nasty and self centered vain characters to fight or hate. At that level it was a fun and exciting read.
Yet the most interesting aspect to me, were the situations Azalea and Torin were placed in, and the interactions between them. What did Azalea's loss mean to her? How did their ability to sense each others emotions affect them? How did Azalea cope with being a trainee in such a situation and did Torin reasonably care for his trainee. As characters, sometimes they annoyed me enough to end up putting much thought into how they were treated by others and how they treated each other. It is a book that puts characters in interesting positions to think about.
Apprentice, book two in the Shadow Atlas series, follows Azalea on her continued journey to explore the magical side of herself and saving the world at the same time. This enemies to lovers young adult romance will keep you guessing at what is going to happen next and who will end up with who. Jenny has created an intricate magical world layered within the well known city of London. Azalea's path pulls you along to learn more about the history of magic, the gods and her family. This ARC read was one that I could not put down and found myself sneaking in time throughout the day to see where each new page would lead.
TW: alcohol use, mention of parental loss, death, blood
I absolutely loved the sequel of Initaite. The world-building is again so detailed and beautifully written. I really liked the storyline and how you get dive deeper in the characters and relationships.
The characters are going on a quest. The book is packed with action, suspense and mysteries. There is also more romance in this book then the first one. There is a little love triangle between Azalea and Erik and Azalea and Torin. A couple extra characters get mixed in the book which I loved. Without spoiling, Azalea has to go through a lot emotions and make difficult choices.
I am so excited to read the next part and I can't wait to get my hands on it.
Book two and boy is it good! We carry on from book one and it’s every bit as fast paced and action packed. Brimming with adventure, magic, suspense and drama. We follow Azalea and Torin on their journey to exotic locations as the stakes are raised and trouble follows them wherever they go. It’s a wonderful interwoven story that draws you in and is enthralling and captivating and has a little more romance as we enter a love triangle between Azalea and Erik and Torin. It’s a fun and exciting Ya read, magical and tense in places and had me hooked from start to finish.
3.5 stars - This book was full of adventure. Enjoyed the tension between Azalea and Torin and how their relationship developed. The dream part made me laugh when they both realised they were in the same dream 😂 I need to know what happens next with that ending.. and also if they can resist to stop their bond from growing stronger.

I couldn't put this book down! The world building is absolutely amazing and you can tell how well researched this book is. I really loved the two main characters and am super excited to see what the next book holds for them!
Such a fun contemporary magic YA adventure. High school me would have gone crazy for this series, adult me thinks they are a really fun escape. There is plenty of fun tropes, drama, and adventure. While I didn't always believe some of the characters motivations it's a great read if you don't over think it and just enjoy the ride. I'm really looking forward to continuing the adventure in book 3.
Tropes: Enemies to Lovers Love Triangle Grumpy Sunshine Fated Mates The Chosen One
Jenny Sandiford's "Apprentice" picks right back up from where "Initiate" leaves off. With the truth of Torin's past actions now on her mind, Azalea struggles to come to terms with her anger. The added difficulties of the deals struck with the Archmage and the Gods alike means she cannot get far enough away from him. Torin is no better; tasked with being Azalea's mentor, he now has to keep her safe from his father and the impossible mission the Archmage has set before him. Can they find a common ground to build their future? Or will the past set them up for failure?
Welcome back to the world of "The Shadow Atlas", where good and evil aren't as clear as we thought them to be.
In a stunning sequel, the world of magic continues to expand and explore new paths and fates. Shadow magic takes center stage as Azalea and Torin hunt down jade relics of the past. Between monsters, gods, and the Shadow Atlas' riddles, there is enough adventures, fights, and world-building to keep any reader enthralled.
Only days have passed since the fight with the Gallu and Azalea is still headstrong and stubborn, but she isn't as quick to leap into situations without thinking it through. Her heart still guides her, but she is learning to weigh the odds a little better. On the complete opposite hand, Torin's facade is starting to crack. His goals have shifted and as he grows closer to Azalea and the promise of truth, he is starting to get reckless. Both characters give us this amazing insight to what it takes to be a hero, balancing one's ideals with the other's.
Warnings: This novel did contain themes such as violence, mild language, sex, and Death. Sandiford did not disregard the gravity of such scenes and handled those scenes in ways that were not gratuitous.
If you loved the energy and magic of the first book, the second chases that high while giving you maturing characters, grittier stories, and new mysteries to solve. Everything you enjoyed about "Initiate" and its nostalgia returns while building the bridge to the enigmatic "House of Ravens". "Apprentice" is immersive and once you pick it up, you'll believe there is magic out there still. And the ending will leave you anticipating the next installment.
Note: I received an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.

This second novel in The Shadow Atlas series is full of suspense and adventure! Exactly the right pace and amount of action to make it a great read, and definitely left me wanting more. Can't wait for the next installment so I can find out what what happens with Azalea and Torrin as this captivating story continues.

Over time, the memory of the gods and relics faded into myth. The truth was lost to ancient history. Until now …
Apprentice is an outstanding sequel to The Shadow Atlas series! I thoroughly enjoyed returning to the world created by Jenny Sandiford and following Azalea and Torin on their adventures. The stakes get higher; the problems multiply, and the characters agonise, flex and grow. We get to travel around the world in Book Two and I adored visiting the far-flung locations … particularly when we are chasing hidden magical objects. LOVE!
The romance grows in Apprentice too, and we get to see how the relationship between Azalea and Torin develops—particularly now that Azalea knows the truth about Torin. Throw a bit of a love triangle in there and you hold your breath, hoping they can figure it all out!
I particularly enjoyed the character of Fabian in this book. He was richly portrayed and loud out loud funny at times.
The action builds throughout the book, and towards the end, it seems like all is lost. I kept turning pages, wondering how our heroes were going to get out of trouble. I won’t give the ending away, of course, but suffice to say – I’m very much looking forward to Book Three!

This is the second book in the Shadow Atlas series and man... it was good! It didn't suffer from Second Book Blues/Syndrome. It was well written (like the first book- The Initiate) and packed full of action (also like the previous book) and had a slow burn you'll be rooting for 1000%! I loved the juxtaposition between Azelea and Torin as well as the unique places they found themselves (and the relics) in. Now, for me, the trials they had to navigate to spirit away said relics (usually from creatures thought only to reside in Legend) were circumvented waaaaay too easily. That trope usually feels like a bit of lazy writing, BUT, somehow, Mrs. Sandiford managed to make it work. It worked so seamlessly that my ADHD addled mind didn't fixate on it too long... high praise en mi casa. Now, is simple achievement of difficult tasks and easily mastered powers in a coming of age tale a trope that usually niggles and chafes?? Yes, yes it is BUT again, the character development and interactions (coupled with the rest of the action) eased this pet peeve of mine into Mellow Mood... a feat worth mentioning twice.
Overall: This book was another fun, exciting, quick read with an ending that had me searching/hoping/desperately wanting more AND what better praise can there be than that? Wellll, I'll also cop to enjoying these books so much that I'll be on the lookout for more of her future work to come.
Anywho, I highly recommend this book to all who like a fast-paced read with an interesting magic system, solid character development, and a slow burn worth sticking around for. I'm excited to see where this story is headed.
~ Enjoy

WE GOT A MAP!!!!!!!!!!! I yelled this out the moment I saw that page. I’m directionally challenged and I LOVE me a good map. From one Jennifer to another THANK YOU! You would not believe the difference in reading enjoyment a simple map can make. ARC kindly provided from the author/publisher via BookSirens for an honest review.
With our new found background of Torin’s past we jump back in to our main story with Azalea Sharp just after the tragic end of the first book. Both our main characters’ now have to deal with the fallout to their actions and the loss of the lives along the way. Azalea’s penance is to serve the the Archmage by helping Torin finish the hunt for the relics she so mysteriously wants. While they go on their fabulous magical archaeological adventure the rest of the world continues to shun and hunt them down. Family Lies Archaeology Adventures Ancient Mythological Creatures. God Ordained Soul Bonds Betrayal WAR This book like the first was an amazing wild ride. The world just keeps getting richer and more nuanced. The characters felt more cemented into this world, and properly fleshed out in their reactions to the events going on around them. The only one that seemed out of place was Jade; she seemed more like a very perfectly placed plot advancing mechanism that our main character utilized fully but towards the end she started to grow on me. Which leads me to believe she will feel right at home in book 3, and I look forward to seeing who she become in the grand scheme of things in the rest of this series. I enjoy this series so much and will once again begin my count down until book 3!
I flipped the last page, and I went 'NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO.....'. I want to read more. I want to know what happened later. I didn't even realize I was in the last chapter until I flipped the page to the title 'Also by Jenny Sandiford'.
Azalea gets kicked out of the Initiate program after Elam gets killed during the Gallu hunt. The Archmage decides to make her, Torin Dumont's Apprentice, clearly to piss off Azalea. But there is a secret between these two that made them so powerful. They made the impossible relic hunt, possible.
But why does The Archmage want these relics anyway? What's her plan? Is she such a sage to keep them treasured and protected?
This is the perfect sequel, right here. Very well-built plot and characters. There is so much going on in the story. And I loved reading this part. Writing is so good. I loved this better than the first part. And the tension between Azalea and Torin!!? Uffff...you can feel it through the book. Now I can't wait to read the third one.
This one, clearly, is now one of my favorite fantasy reads. I really want to watch this, made into a movie someday. All the hollow cuts, magic described between Azalea and Torin, the tension and of course the snake tattoo on Torin.
This, now, goes into my recommendation list. And I will keep recommending this for all the fantasy lovers.
Jenny, Thank you so much for the ARC. I am glad I signed up to join your ARC team for Initiate. I got hooked right from the start. Sign me up for the next one, too🙈✌️
I wasn’t sure about this book when I first got into it, but I had high hopes after the first one. Authors are always learning, and I was sure that after the first book, the writing and plotting would improve as well. I was not disappointed.
The book is once again written in third person limited, though the perspective sometimes shifts from chapter to chapter, depending on who the author wanted to focus on—usually Azalea, Torin, or Fabian. The book begins with another Before section, giving the reader a sneak peek at what the story is going to focus on without any of the characters knowing.
Erik really is a roller coaster in this book. I mentioned in my review of the first book that his 180-personality-change didn’t make sense, but seeing more of his character arc, all the pieces are fitting together. Things between him and Azalea get much more heated after their kiss during the battle with the corporeal gallu, much to Torin’s dismay. There’s an obvious love triangle here, which is not my favourite thing to read, but I know a lot of people enjoy it—especially with the added tension because of Torin’s past.
The writing quality definitely went up in this book compared to the first. While in Initiate I found quite a few sentences that were worded in ways that were confusing to me, this book had none of that. It all flowed a lot smoother, and the text was clear and easy to read. Sandiford’s style is casual but not too much so, maintaining seriousness in the tense situations and warmth in friendly ones.
I never felt that the book was moving too fast or too slow story-wise, but the romance was a bit whirlwind for me. I haven’t been in any serious relationship, but I’m definitely not the type of person to fall into a friends-with-benefits type of deal, nor one to dance around a potential romantic interest. Because of that, I felt a bit lost in reading those parts; I’m sure others would feel differently.
I’m also super impressed (again) with the beauty of these books. Many self-published authors fall into a pit after realizing just how expensive it is to publish a book on their own, and they cut corners where they shouldn’t. Sandiford hasn’t done that here. The entire book is edited in detail, the covers are all compelling, and the interior formatting is clean and professional. I love it all.
This whole series is great for readers who loved Harry Potter but want an older, more mature cast of characters.

We pick up directly after the events of book one, so if you haven’t read it stop pick it up enjoy and then come back to this story. Not quite sure how to give a brief summary of actions without spoilers so I’ll just say that there’s tons of action, lots of magical adventures and some very interesting relationships that develop. After I read book one I had some mixed feelings but I’m very happy that I read this book because the story is enthralling. The world building is very cool as it’s a magical community hidden in plain sight at the Tower of London! It’s a bit on the long side, but it’s a magical adventure that has something for fans of all genres. Book two is no sophomore slump it’s a definite must read!.

Second book of the series and I absolutely love it, it follows straight on from book 1, and there's so much adventure and drama. After the revelations at the end of book 1 things are understandably tense between Torin and Azalea, but they've been forced to work together on a mission. I love all the mini quests they go on to collect the relics and the mystical creatures protecting them. This story had some great twists and revelations, and it's becoming difficult knowing who can be trusted. This story has a great slow burn romance building as the bond grows between Torin and Azalea, and the development of there powers and abilities together. I love the use of magic and prophecies in this, and the riddles that come from the shadow atlas and visions. It's a spell binding story that's truly captivating. Can't wait for part 3!
The Shadow Atlas Series Book 2 – Apprentice Follows Azalea as she continues her journey, unraveling the mysteries of her magical abilities while simultaneously trying to save the world. Sandiford's storytelling pulls you along Azalea's path, inviting you to discover the rich history of magic, the involvement of gods, and the secrets within Azalea's own family.
Sandiford has a knack for creating a world that feels both fantastical and grounded, with the magical elements integrated into the backdrop of London. The characters are relatable, and Azalea's journey is one that I enjoy reading.
There is more romance and action. The story explores the depths of magic and also takes you on a thrilling adventure filled with heart-pounding moments and unexpected twists. I read this book in two sittings. A really fun read!
Sandiford has done it again! She has written in a book that pulled me in from the very first page and held me enthralled until the end. All I can say is, I need more! Now please!
I absolutely love Azalea and Torin. And baby griffins! OMG! I never knew until now that I need them in my life!
The plot was so well-thought-out. The characters are real. I feel like their friends that have been part of my life all along. The places are real, beautiful, and with a twist of magic added in.
I have a feeling The Shadow Atlas series is nearing its end, and I will miss these characters who have become a part of my life.
They have taken me on such amazing adventures to places I doubt I will ever see otherwise.
This book picks up right after the events at the end of book 1, and Azalea is dealing with finding out that Torin was responsible for her father’s death. They’re still dealing with the bond, the crazy missions the Archmage is sending them on, and forcefully having to work together. We do get a good bit of growth from Azalea in this book. She still acts impulsively, but not quite as badly as book 1. Torin, bless his heart, I just want to shake him some times. Finally, we get these two communicating with each other and we see lots of progress in their relationship. This book really has a lot of things happening. It’s fast paced and page turning, keeping the reader hooked until the end. Can’t wait to see what happens in book 3!
This is the 2nd book in the Shadow Atlas series, and it was an easy 5/5 for me!
The tomb raiding/relic hunting storyline was brilliant! I mean, mystical artefacts AND mythological creatures? What more could a girl ask for?
I really enjoyed the first book and the Torin spin-off, but this one just went up to the next level! I nearly missed my stop on the subway more than once because I was so engrossed in the story 🤣
The plot was well paced and kept me on the edge of my seat. Also, would I read another spin-off about Torin hunting the relics? Hell, yes, I would.
I have such high expectations for the rest of this series. It's definitely one that's not to be missed!

4.25/5 ⭐️
Apprentice by Jenny Sandiford is an amazing sequel and continuation to the Shadow atlas series. The magic system and the world were just as amazing as the first book. It was great reading about everyone again and see them continue to grow. The enemies to lovers was amazing and I didn’t even know who would en up with who in this book. The plot was truly interesting and I loved getting to know more about the magic and the gods. I honestly cannot wait to read the next book in the series and see where it will go from here. I absolutely recommend this book and hope everyone who liked Harry Potter can give it an opportunity.
I received an ARC of Apprentice and I count myself very lucky because of this! I couldn’t stop reading and had to sneak in more reading time during my lunch breaks! This series is now one of my all time favourite new adult fantasy series’, with beautifully constructed magic and very fleshed out character relationships. I loved seeing how Torin and Azalea’s relationship evolved throughout this book and found it very intriguing to have them being able to read each others emotions! I gotta tell y’all the enemies to lovers new adult romance is so good and I like how it’s a bit more of a subplot. Also, two words. Baby. Griffins. 🥰🥰
Jenny is a amazing writer, she immerses us in the story for hours. Again has a lot of action, thriller and surprising events. I liked the other first books, but she could surprised me in this one. We still follow Azalea Sharp with her journey to discover more about her powers, deal with her relationship with Torin and the chaos around her. Yes, her life is worst and will be more confusing in this book. Just exciting to read the next one. :D.

I’m so glad I got to read the first two books I the series back to back.
A fabulous continuation of the story! The magic gets more intense, there’s more travel and relic hunting, shifting relationships, and events that change the world.
Jade’s prophecies are proving true. The people once thought to be evil and on the wrong side of magic may not be what the seem. Power floods the earth and creatures are unleashed. Can it be reversed? I need book 3!
Had to read the last couple of chapters of the previous book to bring me up to speed, has been awhile since I read it. This book takes off running from the beginning and doesn’t give up. Lots of action, slow burn romance, great friends and support characters, also continuing to world build. Cliffhanger ending so bring on next book. Her and Torin consult the shadow atlas as well. Something about the archmage feels off and the pair struggle with what they ultimatelty have to do.
