খারাপ না কিন্তু হ্যাগার্ডের অন্যান্য বইগুলোর সাথে তুলনা করলে বলা হবে উনার এর থেকে বেশ ভালো ভালো বই পড়েছি। এন্ডিংটা মনমতো হয়নি, হঠাৎ শেষ হয়ে গেল এমন। আরেকটু ভালো হতে পারত।

I love an historical fiction novel. This one was as easy read, but sometimes things were just a bit too convenient or contrived. No illustrations accompany this novel, so that, for me, is a bummer.

‘Belshazzar’ (1930), published posthumously, is the last novel by Henry Rider Haggard, who finished it a few months before his death in 1925. ‘Belshazzar’ displays some of the exhaustion and grief of an old man who has seen a whole generation of young men cut down: it lacks that magical zing that marked his famous romances like ‘She’ and ‘King Solomon’s Mines,’ while it displays Haggard’s painstaking search for historical accuracy. This underlying gloom clearly reflects Haggard’s own profound despair following the devastation of the First World War, which cast a dark shadow over his final years.
Ramose, the protagonist and narrator, is the son of the Pharaoh Apries by a Greek concubine. As such, he has a remote claim to the throne by virtue of his royal blood. He is not the Pharaoh’s successor, however. Following a string of unfortunate events, including a love affair and a nearly mortal fight in which a Syrian priest is mutilated, the Pharaoh must either kill or exile him. Ramose leaves for Cyprus with his old teacher Belus and a foundling orphan after a major battle with Babylon in which a Babylonian female prisoner gives him the child to protect, vowing that the infant has royal blood in her veins.
After this point, the narrative loses its drive. Instead of a dynamic historical novel, all we seem to do is wait for seventeen or eighteen years while the infant Myra grows into a great beauty and Ramose grow immensely wealthy as a merchant; no sooner does Ramose marry Myra, than she is kidnapped by the Pharaoh as a bride for the aging King Nabonidus of Babylon to cement Egypt's friendship with the Babylonians against a new enemy, Cyrus the Great of the Persians. Then follows another protracted period of waiting, during which Nabonidus spends the last ten years of his life in self-exile in the desert, while Myra is taken under the protection of the Prophet Daniel. Upon Nabonidus’s death, his son Belshazzar returns from fighting the Persians for his coronation, and to take Myra as his own wife. Belshazzar himself is stripped of his historical military competence, and transformed into a classic, flat pulp villain driven entirely by tyranny and cruelty.
The dramatic writing-on-the-wall scene occurs in the last chapter, after Belshazzar has roundly insulted the god of the Hebrews. However, even this scene, and the confusion that ensues, is almost perfunctory in the telling.
While Haggard is ruthlessly correct about timelines and historical facts, he is not so scrupulous in the descriptions of real persons. Thus, the Pharaoh Amasis, who is initially seen to be a friend of Ramose and Belus, becomes an implacable enemy for reasons that are never made very clear. Amasis, known to history as the Pharaoh Ahmose II, actually was both a good soldier and general, and a wise ruler, who reigned over Egypt for the best part of half a century, and is remembered as one of its last native Pharaohs. Why Haggard vilified him here as a major antagonist is inexplicable, as it adds very little to the plot. Furthermore, fans of Haggard's earlier works will find a surprising lack of his trademark post-World adventure and mystical occultism; the narrative remains grounded in political realism until the final, abrupt biblical miracle.
It is not easy to get a copy of the book, either in print, as an audiobook, or as an e-book. I found a downloadable copy in the Roy Glashan Library via Gutenberg Australia.

যদিও একে প্রেম কাহিনী বলা যাবে না। তবে প্রেম-ভালোবাসার পবিত্র পরিণতিই এই বইয়ের মূল সারমর্ম। যুদ্ধ, প্রেম, নারী, সংঘাত, রাজ্য, ক্ষমতা, লোভ, ধর্ম, সততা, বীরত্ব কি নেই বইটিতে। তবে বইটির নাম বেলশ্যাযযার না হয়ে অন্য কিছু হলে ভালো হতো। এখানে ছোট করে বলে রাখি অনন্য- অসাধারণ- অকল্পনীয়, হেনরি রাইডার হ্যাগার্ড এর আরেকটি অনবদ্য সৃষ্টি?

«Валтасар» — последнее из опубликованных произведений Райдера Хаггарда. Написано оно в духе всех его работ на тему древнего мира — с минимальным соответствием исторической действительности. Читателю хватит некоторых фактов о прошлом, на основе которых для него будет развёрнуто полотно повествования. На этот раз речь касалась событий вокруг крушения Вавилона. Это царство, некогда славившееся могуществом, оказалось на пути персидского царя Кира, вознамерившегося включить Вавилон в состав своей империи. Но эта историческая данность — антураж, несущий ознакомительную цель. Главнее наблюдать за жизнеописанием некоего лица, называющегося сыном фараона.

Curious novel which culminates in Belshazzar's feast and the writing on the wall, mentioned in the Bible (Daniel 5). I couldn't take the love story seriously, though. The fact that Ramose raised Myra from a child and practically adopted her makes him her father, in my opinion, so it was quite weird and disturbing that he actually wanted to marry her. It could have been possible in ancient times, I don't know, but it detracted a lot from the enjoyment of the story.
I liked the character of Ramose's teacher, Belus, best of all. A physician and seer of immense ability, he reminded Gandalf (Lord of the Rings) by his participation in every plot and venture. Unlike Ramose, who mostly just let things happen to him.

হেনরি রাইডার হ্যাগারর্ডের বই মানেই বিশেষ কিছু। ব্যতিক্রম হয়নি এই ক্ল্যাসিক্যাল ফিকশন ও। একটানা পড়েছি, ৩০০+ পেজের বই মাত্র দুদিনে শেষ করেছি। গল্পের একটি বিষয় আমার কাছে ভালো লাগেনি,(বললে স্পয়লার হয়ে যাবে তাই বলছি না) সেজন্যই রেটিং: ৩.৫/৫ দিলাম।

আমার কাছে বইটা মাঝারি মানের মনে হয়েছে,
কারনো হ্যাগার্ডের লিখনি শক্তি আরো খুবই ভালো,,
তবে বইটা পড়ে একটা আক্ষেপ রয়ে গেলো
শেষ হয়েও হইলো না টাইপ,
অনুবাদ নিয়ে কোন অভিযোগ নেই,

বই রেটিং ৫.৩ দিবো কারন আমি হ্যাগার্ডের
এর চাইতেও শক্তিশালি লেখা পড়েছি।

A story set in ancient Egypt and Babylon. Ramose is the illegitimate son of the Pharoah. He becomes a soldier and then a merchant, very creepily marries his adoptive daughter Myra, and goes on a quest to rescue her after she is kidnapped to marry the king of Babylon. The prophet Daniel is a background character, he helps protect Myra because she is apparently a princess of Israel.
I didn’t think much of it. For one thing, it was boring. For another, Ramose’s mysoginistic attitude really put me off, especially his utter lack of respect for his mother Chloe. There was this bit where the new Pharoah who had overthrown Ramose’s father is coming to visit them, Chloe is happy and Ramose is horrified that she’s happy.
“Don’t you realise this is the man who killed your lord, the father of your son?”
“He was my lord, but he loved me for a few years then got tired of me and married me off to another man. And he was your father, but he tried to have you executed on trumped up charges. It’s only thanks to this new Pharoah giving you his protection that you’re still alive, and for that I’d forgive him anything - besides, he didn’t kill your father, his men did that without his knowledge.”
*disapproving head shake* “Typical shallow woman. He killed her lord and the father of her son, but because he’s Pharoah she welcomes him like a god.”
Plus, of course, the fact that Ramose married his daughter. He was constantly saying “She is not my daughter”. Dude, you may not share any DNA but you raised her from a toddler and she called you 'Father’ until she was an adult. She’s your daughter and you are gross. This made it very hard to root for the characters, since them settling down to a life of wedded bliss is not what I consider a happy ending.
