Almost Dark is another stellar collection of poems by Richard Terrill. I admired how he expanded his poetic canvas in this book to include the country of Poland where he has lived and taught. Terrill captures the flavor of this country which has faced such difficulties in its history. Terrill, however, does not stop there but includes personal takes involving his parents, friends, and religion; his reach is perceptive, curious, and observant. I found the poem: The Father's Room, particularly moving with infused power of the mortality that faces us all as humans. Also 23 Short Poems about Love nearly danced off the page under my reading--so eclectic, wise, and spiritual. Also, November 22, is the date of weight American history that Terrill tackles from a childhood memory. There are many other wonderful poems in this collection as well. The poems of Almost Dark rove like a searchlight picking up images that resonate with the reader. Highly recommended. No sophomore slump to found here within Terrill's second masterly collection of poems. Read and admire Terrill's all encompassing vision as an artist.
