A Short History of the Ismailis: Traditions of a Muslim Community
A major Shi'i Muslim community with a long and eventful history, the Ismailis were until recently studied primarily on the basis of the accounts of their enemies, including the Sunni polemicists and the Crusader chroniclers. As a result, a host of legends were disseminated on the teachings and practices of the Ismailis. The study of Ismailism began to be revolutionized from the 1930s, with the recovery of a large number of Ismaili texts preserved in private collections. A Short History of the Ismailis brings together the results of modern scholarship on the highlights of Ismaili history and doctrines within the broader contexts of Islamic history and Shi'i thought.
Critically examining the Ismaili historiography and other types of relevant source materials, this book covers the main developments in all the major phases of Ismaili history, including the early formative period, the Fatimid and Ismaili golden age, and the Alamut and post-Alamut periods. It also examines the major schisms among the Islmailis as well as their more recent history.

In the mind-bogglingly complicated world of Islam there is perhaps no more difficult group to understand than the Ismailis. Yet Daftary has made a good fist of doing so here and gets top marks for his efforts. Make no mistake, this is an extremely dense book with a wealth of academic detail. It would be easy to lose the reader with a subject such as this, but Daftary has that rarest of skills - he writes extremely well and has great style, even though this is most definitely a scholarly work. That combination alone is a rare thing indeed...
The Ismailis are one of many Shiite groups and one of the smaller and less understood Shiite groups at that. The majority of Shiites today are to be found in Iran, where the so-called "Twelver" system prevails. What this means is that most Shiites believe that there were twelve Imams, the first being Ali, the twelfth being the Mahdi, who is currently in a state of occultation and will return on the day of judgement.
By contrast, the Ismailis are known as "Seveners", after a schism within the Shiite sphere following a disagreement about who should be the seventh Imam. The "Seveners" proclaimed Ismail to be the rightful Imam, hence their name.
Another major group within the Shiite world are the "Fivers", who also disputed the succession of Imams and followed Zayd - hence their being known as the Zaydis. The Zaydis are still commonly found today in Morrocco and Yemen, but up until the time of the Safavids, some 500 years ago, they were the largest Shiite group.
Of these major Shiite denominations the "Ismaili Seveners" have the most colorful history. The epicenter of Ismailism migrated around the countryside in the most unusual way, first to Syria and then Tunis, before conquering Egypt and establishing Cairo as their capital. From Cairo the "Ismaili Fatimids" ruled as the most powerful dynasty in Islam, the only time that a Shiite dynasty has been the foremost power in the Islamic World.
From this peak the Ismaili movement suffered a series of setbacks, including a major schism once again over who should be the Imam - Nizar or Mustaali. The Nizaris established themselves in the mountains northen Iran and Syria, and it is from them that we get the Assassin legends. The Egyptian Fatimids broke down into ever smaller groups, and now exist mainly in northen India as the Bohras.
There is no doubt that this is a great book but the funniest part of it is found in the title "Short History" for it is anything but that. In fact, I would only recommend this book for readers who already have a fairly fundamental grasp of Islamic history. To dive into this book without it might just leave you shaking your head. Explanations of Ismaili belief systems, such as Neo-Platonic cosmology can be difficult to understand at the best of times. Background reading required first.

Very dense and very comprehensive. If you're looking for a broad introduction to the many Ismaili groups from the dawn of Islam until the dawn of the 21st century, this book's for you.

در باره کتاب : این کتاب در مورد یکی از مقاطع طولانی و مهم تاریخ دینی منطقه خاورمیانه و تاحدودی افریقا است که متن اصلی تقریبا از سال 148 هجری قمری شروع به اتفاق افتادن میکنه و تا هم اکنون هم ادامه پیدا میکنه.سیر تاریخی کتاب به گونه ای هست که یک دید کلی و در بعضی موقع با جزییات کافی از حکومت ها و سلسله های موجود در سرزمین خاورمیانه از دوران بنی امیه-قلعه الموت-حمله مغولها-دوران صفویه و ... در اختیار خواننده قرار میده که اطلاعات بسیار با ارزش و خواندنی هستند.
کتاب با افسانه زدایی از اسماعیلیان و چرایی افسانه بافی برای این مذهب کار خودش شروع میکنه و با بررسی سلسله ای امامان اسماعیلی از زمان بنی امیه تا حال حاضر و اتفاقات و حوادث سیاسی-تاریخی-فرهنگی-فلسفی یک پیش زمینه روشنی از تاریخ اولین حکومت شیعی و فلسفه منجی نگرانه شیعه و همینوطر مشکلات و تفرقه های اتفاق افتاده در زمان های مختلف و چرایی اونها را به مخاطب نشون میده.که حتی امکان ریشه یابی بعضی از فرقه ها مثل بهاییت هم در درون این نوشته تاریخی قابل مشاهده میتونه باشه.
نکته قابل توجه این کتاب اشاره داشتن به بیشتر حوادث اتفاق افتاده از دوران بنی امیه تا حال به همراه با جزییات بسیار اموزنده مثل چگونگی اداره شهر ها-سلسله مراتب حکومتی-نقش پررنگ زنان در حکومت-استفاده از تقیه-پیدایش صوفیان-شروع دوباره نظام های گنوسی-عرفانی در ایران پس از مسلط شدن اسلام و ... هست.البته از تطبیق اتفاقات افتاده در تشکیل اولین حکومت اسماعیلی بیان شده در این کتاب و اتفاقات مربوط به دوران ما هم نمیشه به سادگی گذشت که در بهضی مواقع شباهت های انکار ناپذیری با هم دارن.
-برخلاف بعضی از کتاب های تاریخی، نوع نوشته و ترجمه کتاب به خوبی باعث جذب خواننده میشه به خصوص در ۴ فصل اول

-مهم است که یاد اور شویم که در تمام منابع اسلامی که از نزاریان به عنوان حشیش نام برده شده این اصطلاح به صورت مجازی و در معنای تحقیر امیز(ادم فرومایه) و (مطرود و بی دین) به کار رفته است.تعبیر و تفسیر لفظی و لغوی این کلمه در مورد نزاریان ریشه در خیال پردازیهای غربیان در قرون میانه و جهل امیخته به خیالبافی انها از اسلام و اسماعیلیان دارد.
-ابو عبداالله جعفر ابن محمد الصادق که واپسین امامی بود که هم شیعیان اثنی عشر هم شیعیان اسماعیلی به امامت او قایل بودند پس از انکه شالوده اعتقادی شیعه را بر مبنایی استوار قرار داد در سال ۱۴۸ رحلت فرمود.اختلاف و نزاعی که بر سر جانشینی او در گرفت سبب تقسیم تاریخی تشیع امامیه و پیدایش اسماعیلیه شد.
-اسماعیلیان نزاری یک اقلیت مذهبی هستند که در کشور های بسیاری پراکنده اند اینان پیوسته و تقریبا بلا انقطاع از زمان سقوط الموت تا روزگاران اخیر تحت تعقیب و ازار مذهبی قرار داشته اند.به این دلیل اغلب متوسل به تقیه شده اند و ممتد شده خویشتن را به پوشش های مختلف چون صوفیان،شیعیان ۱۲ امامی سنیان و حتی هندوان در اورده اند.اینکه نزاریان اصولا پای برجا مانده اند و در روزگاران جدید به صورت یک جامعه مترقی با هویتی ممتاز در امده اند خود گواه انعطاف پذیری سنن انها و نیز قدرت سازگاری پذیریشان تحت رهبری بصیرانه امامان متاخرشان است.

Ismailici. Zarys Lisiołów.

Jeśli Lisioł piśnie karmaci, nikt nie zareaguje, ale jeśli futrzak piśnie assassyni, to już sporo osób skojarzy o co chodzi. Jednak nic nie bierze się z powietrza. Wszystko ma swoją historię. Dlatego futrzak postanowił rozszerzyć swoją wiedzę i sięgnął po książkę „Izmailici. Zarys historii” autorstwa Farhada Daftary’ego. Lisioł musi przyznać, że to była jedna z trudniejszych lektur z jakimi przyszło mu się zmierzyć.

Książka jest napisana językiem trudnym dla laika. Przesiąknięta pojęciami z języka arabskiego oraz nazwiskami, na których połamiecie sobie język przy wymowie – chyba że macie w tym praktykę. Jest to pozycja ściśle naukowa, nie dla początkujących. Nawet daty są podawane w dwóch wersjach. Po kilku głębszych łykach sake, można nabrać wątpliwości, który dzisiaj mamy rok.

Lisioł przyznaje, że wielokrotnie musiał się wracać i czytać dokładniej skąd, jaka grupa się wzięła. Wyznawcy Islamu nie stanowią takiej jednorodnej mozaiki jak się nam czasem wydaje, a podział na szyitów i sunnitów to dopiero początek góry lodowej. Do tego dochodzą ideologiczne podstawy tych podziałów oraz geopolityczne np. chęć obalenia Umajjadów.

Książka jest naprawdę bardzo wartościowa i wnosi sporo do tematu, jednak nie będzie stanowić pomostu do wiedzy dla niewtajemniczonych. Lisioł poleca tylko osobom obeznanym z tematem, dążącym do pogłębienia swojej wiedzy.

PS. Jakby ktoś wciąż nie wiedział o kim dokładnie jest książka, to Ismailici to ugrupowanie religijne wewnątrz islamu szyickiego. W pewnym sensie odłam polityczny także.

قرأت الترجمة العربية منه، كتاب جيد جدا يسلط الضوء باختصار غير مخل على مجمل تاريخ الإسماعيليين منذ البدء حتى القرن العشرين، يوضح كيف تطورت هذه الجماعة التي بدأت غامضة وسرية، وانتهت إلى الاندماج مع الحداثة، وتطوير أفكارها.. ويوضح الانقسامات العديدة التي مر بها الإسماعيليون، والعقبات التي واجهوها، في رحلة شيقة بأسلوب علمي يفند بعض الأساطير التي قيلت عن الإسماعيليين من خصومهم.

إن التاريخ الإسماعيلي، فضلاً عن تاريخ الإسلام الشيعي العام، من الكبر بمكان يجعله في حاجة إلى معجم أو قاموس لضبط تاريخه ومعتقداته. ومنذ الانشطار الإسماعيلي/الإثني عشري في منتصف القرن الثاني الهجري، لم نحصل على فرصة سليمة لقراءة التاريخ الإسماعيلي، خصوصاً عندما تعرف أن الإسماعيليين قد مارسوا، خلال تاريخهم الطويل منذ الإمام الأول عليّ بن أبي طالب حتى الآغاخان الرابع الحالي، تعاليم وأنظمة عقائدية معقدة ومركبة جداً من ضمنها التقيّة (السرية)، فكانت النتيجة أن جاءت معرفتنا عن الإسماعيليين من فم الضد: السنيّة أو الإثني عشرية، مثلاً، أو حتى الأوروبية القروسطية.
بجانب الكتاب الضخم لتاريخ الإسماعيليين وعقائدهم، حرر د. فرهاد دفتري أول معجم عن تاريخ الإسلام الشيعي الإسماعيلي ليغطي المفاهيم العقائدية والتاريخية للجماعة "الباطنية" الأشهر في الإسلام.
هذا المعجم يُمثل موسوعة إسماعيلية مُرتبة أبجدياً، لا كرونولوجياً، يمكن تصفحه في أي وقت من أجل قراءة سريعة لأي شخصية أو مكان أو معتقد شيعي إسماعيلي.
