Rate this book
Lady Brindelle of Belle Rivere was seventeen the summer Sir Stephen Gaillard, Castellan of Cambrai, bought her for his bride...and left her a widow!

Though the fair-haired innocent had heard tell of the harsh life in the north of France, nothing prepared her for the rancor and venom that reigned within the castle of Servieres. Unspeakable deeds long done had bred a vicious enmity between her husband and his brothers, a legacy of malice and suspicion destined to haunt her unborn child.

In a desperate attempt to find someone to trust, Brindelle struggled to unravel the dark mysteries of her new family. And all too soon she began to see that a brooding evil stalked the dimly lit passageways of Servieres...an evil that lived for nothing more than her death!

This late 80s Zebra Gothic certainly looked interesting as it is set in 1400s northern France during the time of Philip the Good, but it just wasn't what I was looking for. It felt more like an overly dramatic historical romance than a gothic to me. (How many times can they say "Mon dieu!") I did grow bored and didn't really care about the characters or their travails.

There is a heavy theme of pregnancy / babies / heirs which may or may not be a positive for readers depending on what you like in your romances and/or gothics.
