This review encompasses the whole series.
I had to reread this series again for a youth literature school project.
Truth is, it's bad, badly written, often badly thought-out. The narration, the characters, and especially the dialogues, feel so young that when you find out, somewhere around the 5th novel, that the protagonists are around 18-23 years old, the revelation comes as a slap to the face.
They act the way 11 year-olds act, no matter how well they may wield a shield, or how much they save their world.
To the reader I am today, this series does not deserve three stars, but that's the thing, it wasn't written for me. When I read it back when I was eleven years old, the adventures appeared grand, the characters heroic, the villain terrifying (and not as ridiculously non-threatening as he is now), and for that reason i give it three stars. Because I enjoyed it, I devoured all ten novels and liked them, and that was precisely what it promised my 11-year-old self.
However, I cannot give it more than three, because too many blatant incoherences have slipped within the narrative, too many simplified and almost disrespectful portrayals of diverse cultures have left a bitter taste in my mouth, and simply too many evident errors serve to only catapult you out of your reading, and these are not age-appropriate mistakes. No matter which public you write for, there are some things that, as an author, you are expected to deliver, for exemple, remembering basic details about your main characters.

This is one of my favourite childhood series - I read it as a kid and re-read it often, as it's nostalgic. I still really like it, but the writing is definitely more suitable for young teenagers or even pre-teens. I still really enjoy it as it is a nostalgic read for me, but I would only recommend for younger audiences if you have not read it before.
