Life, Over Easy

Rate this book
Watch that first step. It could turn your life upside down.

Until a fall ended his Olympic diving career, John Andrews lived for the seconds he spent in the air. Now he's adrift on a college campus, grounded by paralyzing vertigo and double vision. Worse, he sees shimmering colors over everyone's heads.

The last is hardest to ignore, and impossible when it comes to Mason. While sex with the hot, moody computer major gives John a rush as heady as diving, Mason's the only person John's ever seen surrounded by two distinct colors.

Mason feels like a stranger in his own life. His lover is dead, and he drowns his guilt in bourbon and sex-until John's innocence reawakens the man he used to be. After Mason gives the young virgin a proper introduction to sex, he plans to send him on his way. But John sees too much to make things that easy.

For John, their connection is more than just sizzling sex, it's something worth fighting for. The more he learns about the colors, though, the more he realizes the free-spirited Mason isn't free at all. John doesn't take second place to anyone-even the dead.

Warning: Anyone wishing to read this title should be an adult, free from any condition that might be aggravated by the presence of a not-too-scary haunting, sizzling sexual chemistry, and angsty young men having mildly kinky sex. Other restrictions may apply. No additional equipment needed-unless you like that sort of thing.

K.A. Mitchell

K.A. Mitchell discovered the magic of writing at an early age when she learned that a carefully crayoned note of apology sent to the kitchen in a toy truck would earn her a reprieve from banishment to her room. Her career as a spin-control artist was cut short when her family moved to a two-story house, and her trucks would not roll safely down the stairs. Around the same time, she decided that Chip and Ken made a much cuter couple than Ken and Barbie and was perplexed when invitations to play Barbie dropped off. She never stopped making stuff up, though, and was surprised to find out that people would pay her to do it. Although the men in her stories usually carry more emotional baggage than even LAX can lose in a year, she guarantees they always find their sexy way to a happy ending.

Past and present reviewage on Prism Book Alliance®

I thought I would do something different with this review, as this is my second reading of this book. We start out with my newest thoughts having just finished, and then right below is my original review I posted here on Goodreads back in January of 2014.

Getting the chance to reread this was like coming home and visiting friends in a very familiar place, even physically – I earned my MA at SUNY-Albany and walked those tunnels many a time. Bonus, or not, I lived in Schenectady while attending.

But I digress…

K.A. Mitchell makes it so easy to wander into this story and feel immediately welcomed. This is quite a feat given the current circumstances of both John and Mason’s lives on this day, the day they meet. They’re both dealing with loss and great change and neither is at their best.

These two possess a chemistry that is all kinds of sexy: physically, mentally, and emotionally. They both speak rather openly and to the point about what they want and how they feel, except when they don’t. It’s that very recognizable game of ping pong, making those millisecond decisions about what to say and why you feel the way you do, and whether the other person deserves to know it, or if you have the ability to reveal yourself. To be vulnerable. To tell the truth about who you are.

The entire story feels organic, nothing forced or tricks played. No one is playing hard to get in a coy way, but rather the walls that get built up by way of pain suffered are in place and doing their jobs. These are two people trying to, sometimes in spite of themselves, give this thing a chance, they’re taking the chance. Sometime just not at the same time.

Have I said these two are hot together? Oh good, because they are. They’re compatible and communicative, even when they don’t mean to be, and it all works.

John smiled. Mason liked it, wanted to keep making it happen. And he didn’t have to ask himself when the last time was that he cared if he could make someone else smile. He bit his lip.

I loved this the first time I read it. I loved it again this time. What I would really love? More time with Mason and John and the whole gang.

I think I’m upping my rating for this. Yup, here comes that last star. Five it is.

~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~

Second reading completed, updated review to come on PBA on Nov 14th for retro read spotlight with K.A. Mitchell... and the reason for my upping this to five stars. :)

This will be short on words but it's very long on love.

K.A. Mitchell does it again. If I haven't ever said this before, she's definitely a favorite author. She shows again here why that is so.

John and Mason have both gone through some incredibly difficult things and find themselves starting a new year in college (John as a freshmen at 21 and Mason limping to the starting line) weighed down, to say the least. KAM also starts us out with a bang, literally. I mean, c'mawn, this is how you start a story: HOT. Oh and yes, I said story, as in there is one here. Characters with complexity that mirrors anyone walking around having lived some life.

She's very good at this, using details and locations and character traits that are entirely unique and very believable. This means I'm swept along with the story because it's relatable. Totally true in this case: I went to SUNY Albany, where this takes place, and obtained my master's, and lived in Schenectady while attending LOL. Ah, those tunnels. College life, here you be. It's a time when I think a lot of layers are stripped and we're maybe at our most honest about most things as we work out how to live with those selves. I think I crapped on that explanation, but maybe you'll get it.

There are some aspects of the story I won't mention so that you can discover them on your own. They're integral and sweet and a bit magical but are totally grounded by these very well-drawn characters. Besides John and Mason, we have the two circle of friends of which they are each a part. The humor is there. The heat is there.

On that heat... lemme just tell you, this is how you end a book. No doobt aboot it, my friends. This has become a fave and will go on my comfort food shelf, as well.

Not the usual cookie cut plot of fall into bed romance. There was some yo-yoing back and forth, some outside experimental activities on Johns part.
Kind of refreshing actually, I liked John trying new things and not staying the blushing virgin.
The paranormal aspect of this book was interesting as well, I liked how his synesthesia effected the aura vision.
A great story and romance!

K.A. Mitchell fans are likely to really love this offering. It has the great sex she’s known for, solid characters, good tension, and enough of a happy ending that readers will be excited for the next book in the series. The concept of John’s new found ability is interesting and different without stretching the bounds of imagination too much. Skeptics who don’t believe in psychics, ghosts, or auras can still buy into the story with just a touch of suspended disbelief. The great writing makes the idea come alive and feel honest, instead of hokey or contrived. Also this is clearly a contemporary story with some paranormal elements.

John is a twenty-one year old freshman struggling to find his footing. Once an Olympic diver, a tragic accident has derailed his life. He can no longer dive as he deals with paralyzing vertigo and sees sounds as colors. Not to mention the slight quirk of reading people’s auras. But John doesn’t want any of this “crap” in his life. He’d be happy if the colors disappeared forever and his encounter with the hot, troubled Mason leads to more frustration, confusion, and unbelievable sex. With Mason dealing with his own struggles to move past the death of his partner, John alternately sparks and fights with the arrogant, rude, and smoking hot man. Now if only they can get on the same frequency.

The story is character driven and really hits all the great high points that fans have come to love about the author. The writing is good with some great back and forth banter. The smooth, crisp prose is easy to read and creates a fast, enjoyable pace. The contemporary setting is offset with just a touch of the paranormal. This is the aspect of Mason’s dead partner, Alex, hanging around as a ghost and John’s ability to read auras. He reads auras in single colors but they give John information about how a person is feeling. For example the colors may sharpen and shrink if a person is angry or upset.

Although I’m not a particular believer in the ideas presented, the story incorporates the aspects so well that it doesn’t take much suspended disbelief to go with the concepts. They’re presented well and are essential to both Mason and John so the ideas feel real and important versus being an easy contrived idea to prolong tension. The painful price John pays is a good balance to the insider information, although John’s abilities go too far when he can subtly nudge people’s actions. This is a minor qualm and one that I just wished the story hadn’t gone that far but not enough to really detract from the enjoyment.

The characters are well crafted and really have bite. John and Mason spark off each other for a lot of hot sex scenes, I think there are 3 within the first 50 pages, so the author’s great style and heat come through right away. The chemistry is delightful between these two and when they transition to rude, snappy comments they’re just as entertaining. The push/pull angle of their relationship works well and keeps the tension in the story as there is real doubt if either of these men can get over their own issues enough to be together. This also gives the story a light angst feel but very light. Considering the heavy work the author is capable of, readers can feel confident that this offering is definitely low angst.

Overall "Life, Over Easy" is a really good first installment. It has a happy for now ending, no doubt simply due to the first book in the series. The cast of characters introduced are fun and well rounded with no obvious villains and perfect people. Everyone is nicely nuanced and lends a full feeling to a story that is engaging and interesting. There are some minor issues that kept me from loving this one, such as some scenes lagged and the back/forth tension went on slightly too long, but I doubt many readers will be too bothered by this. Instead pick this up as another solid romance offering from an author with a great backlist.

I liked this book. I liked the characters. So why only 3 stars? I felt like the whole ghost thing was a little anticlimactic and the ending of that storyline and the book itself was a little abrupt. Especially following the BDSM element added in the last 15 or so pages. Plus there were so many loose ends.. The biggest in my mind being Drew. I mean Drew was part of the group and then suddenly he was gone. No mention ever again, not even by his friends, not even to comment on his absence. And then there is Keith. He seemed to not fit into the story. I mean he never really was a possible love interest and he didn't help John in anyway and they were never friends so he seemed a little pointless. Which is a shame because I liked him. I wanted to know what his story was and my heart ached a little because he seemed to be a a really good guy who just wants to be around someone. And then there is Tyler. I mean The psychic kept telling him and John that there was something coming and he'd need John's help and/or friendship to ge through it and then... nothing. I'm pretty sure I know what is going to happen. I have a theory and it involves Simon but I could be wrong and in the end it doesn't matter if I am because there was no resolution in the book. I guess without knowing the overall plan, It's hard to look at this book and think that it is okay alone. The main story is mostly finished, but there were so many side stories introduced and then not concluded that it's frustrating.

So, I guess I would say read it for the 2 main characters, but know that there is very little resolution for anybody, (including them- I mean like I said the end was a little abrupt- it feels like there needs to be a story about their relationship now that they managed to get together. When and if more books in this series come out, and I read them, I may change my overall feeling about this story depending on what follows.

At the start of this book, I didn't like either one of the MCs. I loved that the writer could change my perception of these characters. By the end, I cared a great deal about them.

John Andrews is a 2 time Olympic gold medalist, whose career is ended when he takes a bad fall in practice. He has gone back to college in an attempt to get his life back on track. There is a problem, he suffers from vertigo and sees the color of peoples emotions above their heads. To make matters worse, he is a virgin! That is the one thing he wants most to correct.

One night, John goes to a campus party, where he meets Mason. Mason promises to relieve John of his virginity, but before the deed can be done, Mason passes out. Mason has been living in the bottom of a bottle, since the Alex, the love of his life was killed in an auto accident. Unfortunately, Mason was driving. Their relationship gets off to a bumpy start. When it seems, that they might get together, a new obstacle appears in the form of Alex's ghost!

This is a sexy, sad, strange story that like the MCs grew on me page by page. I give it no threesome full of stars.

Nothing earth shattering here.  That being said, it is a well-developed love story with some steamy hot sex.  If you're looking for a deep read, you will be disappointed.  Just a light, love story with a couple of pieces of baggage thrown in for good measure and to keep it interesting.

I had a hard time deciding how to rate this book. While the characters were not quite as sexy or endearing as in some of K.A. Mitchell's other books (Collision Course, No Souvenirs, and Bad Boyfriend come to mind), some of the themes in Life, Over Easy were deeper. I also really liked Mitchell's handling of the paranormal elements in this novel.

Seeing Mason struggle with his grief and guilt over his lover's death and watching John cope with the brain injury that ended his Olympic diving career made this book feel a bit different from any other male/male romance I've read. The book was primarily about these two individuals finding out who they are now that their lives have drastically and tragically changed. The descriptions of Mason's grief and depression were subtle and very moving. Even more striking were Mitchell's descriptions of John's symptoms, especially his synesthesia.

The development of Mason and John's relationship occurred in fitful starts and stops. In most of Mitchell's other works, her main characters spend little time apart over the course of the book. In Life, Over Easy, Mason and John had separate lives that intersected periodically, but which did not come together permanently or even semi-permanently until the end. I actually found this refreshing. It allowed for a wide cast of characters (Mason's group of friends, and John's separate group of friends), all of whom were fleshed out well enough to feel individual. It also allowed Mason and John to get character development that was not dependent on their interactions with each other.

The paranormal elements in Life, Over Easy were very well handled. They added to rather than detracted from the grief and confusion that the characters were experiencing. The descriptions of John's abilities were particularly interesting.

I definitely recommend this novel to readers who want a bit more from their m/m romances than sex. Don't get me wrong - this wouldn't be a K.A. Mitchell novel if there wasn't plenty of sex - but there is a lot of substance here, too.

This was the first K.A. Mitchell I've read so I had no idea what to expect but the premise intrigued me. I love my paranormals to be firmly rooted in the real world and this one certainly was - the only strange thing is that injured ex-Olympic diver John can see auras (although he firmly refuses to think of them as that), and that the moody yet lovable Mason has a different kind of aura to everyone else.

First things first, this romance is not in any way sweet. This, to my mind, is a good thing. There are a fair few exceedingly hot sex scenes, but Mason and John do not get into anything approaching a romantic relationship for most of the book. This seems perfectly right and in character. Mason was one of the most compelling fictional characters I've read in a long while - a charismatic, moody bad boy with a drinking problem - but he escaped being a stereotype because of the reasons for his behaviour that became apparent and the sheer talent K.A. has for writing.

John did not come alive for me in quite the same way, but I admit that's because I always prefer a bad boy to a clean-cut sporty one. I rooted for the both of them, though, and I loved the way they antagonised each other inbetween shagging like rabbits. It's not all sex, though. There is plot, and it's a good one. To go into any more detail would risk giving spoilers and I don't want to do that. What I want is for you to go and read this book! Highly recommended - this pushed all my buttons and then some!

I love K.A. Mitchell's work, and while Life, Over easy was an engrossing read, it truly wasn't one of my favorites.

I loved John's character and his story was so fantastically told that I felt everything the poor guy went through...I seriously got dizzy reading his POV and could easily empathize with him. My heart broke for Mason...to lose someone you love so completely is devastating, and while he did act like an ass, and often, I honestly couldn't fault him for acting that way.

Like all of Mitchell's work, a unique and engrossing read.

Loved it.

John and Mason are awesome, well-written and all in honestly John had self-awareness and dignity that actually gave me a hard on.

The story line was perfect too. It was a perfect balance between contemporary romance and paranormal. Like the psychic factor in the book didn’t overpower the story, but it added to it. It was delicious.

I looooved the side characters too. Tyler and Lizzy are my favorite handsdown.

The only problem was I wished the book was more detailed or we got to see the characters more. Despite all that I felt like there was a lot left unraveled about those characters, I didn’t get what made them tic.

What a huge disappointment. It was a solid 4 stars for the first half of the book and then it went completely downhill. I don't want to give away the story so I'll just mention some impressions.

John and Mason had zero connection whatsoever. They started off with great chemistry and the sexual tension was palpable. After the classic initial fall out, I was waiting for some angsty, dramatic reunion where the characters would slowly come closer emotionally. It never came. John's apathy and aloofness reminded me of Boyd in the first chapters of ICoS. But John's character never grew or matured, like Boyd eventually did. He just stayed dry and flat until the very end. As for the actual plot development, it became very hocus pocus for me, which was a major let down, because I really think it could have turned out more atmospheric and otherwordly than it did. The erotic scenes were weird, which was extremely surprising to me because I've read quite a few of Mitchell's books and the erotica is usually very steamy and hot. Here, the scenes felt very clinical and as if the characters were disconnected. I was feeling pretty disconnected myself by the end. Good idea but very badly executed.

I'm in a bit of shock over this one. It's really unusual to not feel an emotional connection between the MCs in a K.A. Mitchell book, but I kept waiting to feel it in this one, and it never came. I think Mason was so stuck on Alex and I hated how he treated John. And while John did ask for it sometimes because he kept going back full well knowing Mason wasn't letting go of Alex, I still don't believe it was ok for Mason to treat him the way he did. It seemed like he was using John. And the ending... seriously?! No apology from Mason? John didn't care there was no apology cuz they had kinky sex and decided to be boyfriends?! And neither of them really admitting or saying anything about their feelings except that they're boyfriends?! Nothing in this story really worked for me.

Let me keep this short. Great story, well written, decent length and read.
Sex is graphic and superfluous, but I've become used to it in this genre, and it's easy to skip without losing the plot. I'm starting to believe that the editors add the overly long sex paragraphs as they think this is what gay men want?? Perhaps I'm odd in the fact that they're not needed to progress the story and although it's nice occasionally, I'd prefer it were left to my imagination.
Story is basically sound. Ex Olympian, bashes brain in practice dive, sees stars and from then on, everyone else's mood, in the form of coloured auras (although he doesn't realise that at first). Worth a read. Light and fun.

I enjoyed the complications the characters are involved in. John and Mason are both wounded heroes, and each has his internal battle to fight in, even as they circle around their attraction to each other. Because their difficulties are more than simply psychological this seems more action-y than angst-y. Each man has friends who help make them real and add complexity to the story. The amount of sex is just right and of course it's well done.

How do you start life over after a life altering event? That's the question for Mason and John. Both men have had their lives turned upside down and trying to find your way back can be very difficult. A chance meeting first brings the two men together for what seems like a one night stand, but there's so much more to life and despite themselves it is in getting to know one another they both discover healing and a way to start over. A very engaging read that will keep you turning the pages from beginning to end.

Due to the matter and the blurb I was not expecting for this romance by K.A. Mitchell to be also a light comedy, but indeed it was; better it was a romantic comedy, with some funny moments, that is even better.

Both Mason than John, for a reason or the other, have lost everything and now they have to find a way to start again. Mason was a nice and simple guy, nothing special, but he got lucky and ended with the best boyfriend during his freshman year, the boy everyone wanted, but only Mason got. They were immensely happy but a car accident put a sudden stop to that happiness. Mason cannot neither have the consolation to not being the one who was driving since he was, and Alex is now dead and Mason is alive. I think it was good, and original, that Mason is yes mourning the loss of Alex, and maybe he is drinking too much, and maybe he doesn’t know how to come out of his depression, but he has not suicidal instinct. True, if he could choose, he wanted to be the one dead, and Alex alive, but this is not, and Mason is not thinking to kill himself, he only doesn’t know how to start again without Alex.

John was an Olympic diver, two time gold medallist and All-American boy, at least until the moment a accident during practive didn’t put a stop to his career; now he is simply a college student, a bit too old to be simply a freshman, but not enough experienced to be a senior. He doesn’t fit anywhere and he has no friend. Plus he is gay and virgin, and now that he has not to be in the closet due to the homophobic environment he was living until months ago, he wants to get lost of that virginity thing. At a party John meets Mason, and they seem perfect together: John wants to experience everything and Mason seems to know everything John wants to experience; but when they are right there to make John’s dream comes true, Mason passes away for too much drinking and John gets a serious case of blue ball.

That is the first time I smiled reading this novel, but it was not the last. Even if there is an angst undertheme, Alex’s ghost who wants to communicate with Mason, and John who seems to be the perfect carrier of the message, I didn’t really feel like that was the main theme of the story. Maybe it was since not Mason or John gave too much importance to it; maybe it was the setting, a college campus where everyone seems to have fun; maybe it was since Alex wasn’t an angry ghost: all of that and the humor helped in having the comedy feeling more than the drama. And maybe, or above all, it was since Mason and John are young and horny, and they were plenty enjoying these two characteristic: they can argue, they can have opposite idea, but in the end, they were good in bed, and both of them know it; why do they have the waste such good understanding of each other needs with futile details like a ghost or the meaning of life? They are young and they have plenty of time to decide what they want to do in life.

There is a nice group of supporting characters, all young gay guys wanting to love and have fun: Tyler is probably the most outrageous, the one who welcome you with sex to then become your best friend without any jelaousy at all; but also Simon and Drew and even Keith, they all seem nice guys and for all of them I can see a nice story.

I WILL say this ... this author has one of the most irritating writing styles :-/ ... the characters [mainly the MCs] are obnoxious as hell, their personalities are alarmingly one-dimensional, the formatting is horrid and all over the place, and the plot-line is cumbersome and nonsensical!! I have NO clue how this book got ratings as high as it did, but I'm thinking I read a different book than everyone else!
I'm not trying to be harsh [it's coming naturally with this book/author], but this book really rubbed me the wrong way and the fact that I am realizing I own more books by this author - bought way before I realized this author is NOT for me - is NOT making me a happy camper right now!! This reading experience was so negative it has made me feel quite hostile :-/, something I NEVER feel when I read!!

Additional thoughts::
This book genuinely had an identity crisis ... there was half-baked paranormal shit flying around and what the hell was with that ridiculous BDSM scene at the end?!!? For pete's sake, man!! It was so misplaced, it was ridiculous! OH and John's ability to manipulate emotions/actions ... that was just plain icky and such an unnecessary part of the plot! It's like the author thought, hey, this is something you never see in an M/M book, it doesn't fit here but what the hell, let's just throw that in there!! UGH!! NO!! One last thing ... don't get me started on the ridiculous HFN ending!! It's clear this author doesn't give a flying fuck about a proper ending with an HEA and closure!! It's like this author used all her energy to create a ludicrous plot that by the end of the book, she thought "ah, it's over, fuck it, whatever"! That's genuinely what it feels like ... like the author couldn't care less about properly wrapping things up at the end, and she's not the only author that does this! WHY do authors do that?!? You invest so much in the story but can't give two shits about the ending! Don't your MCs deserve closure? Don't they deserve a glorious HEA, after all THAT?!? Don't answer that; rhetorical question! I'm done!!

*************************

And if you’re wondering why I continued to read this author’s books after discovering the author and her books are just NOT for me, it’s because when I FIRST read the blurbs of these books and before having read ANY of the books themselves, I went all out and purchased about 10 books right off the bat! YUP, I committed BIG time [dammit!!]! How was I to know I’d detest this author’s writing as a general whole and subsequently, detest her books as well?! I figured since I spent the money, I’d read the books … mind you, I gave each and every book a fair and decent chance, thus the rating is also 100% fair and decent (in that previous experiences were NOT an influence). Each and every book got the rating it deserved by its own isolated merit!! Verdict? There is absolutely NO doubt this author is NOT for me and I most definitely will NOT be purchasing anything of hers in the future!!

***********************
I WILL read the other books I bought, because I can no longer return them, otherwise I would have - and I REALLY hope they are much, much, MUCH better than this one was!! I WILL give the other books a fair and decent chance and my rating WILL be a fair one, but after that, I am completely done with this author >:-o!!!!

Mitchell is one of my top 3 fave m/m authors, and Life, Over Easy is in my top 3 faves of her books. I reread it all the time. This is also the only book of hers that has a paranormal element to it, that I know of.

I found the struggles these two men have dealt with in their lives very moving. I enjoyed how they were finding themselves as they were finding each other. It felt like each brought somehing crucial to the relationship - Mason helps John explore his sexuality while John helps Mason put his dead lover to rest. They show each other how to live after tragedy makes them think their lives are over.

As usual in a Mitchell book, the sex manages to be both hot and emotional at the same time. I'm glad she made John a little older and not your standard virgin twink (those deflowering scenes can make me a little uncomfortable, esp. when the guy is young physically or mentally). John is secure and knows what he wants. And even though Mason is the more experienced, we see him learning more about his sexuality thanks to John.

The paranormal twist is that John's accident has left him seeing colors around peoples' heads - which he reluctantly learns are auras. He wants to ignore it, but Mason talks him into learning more because it could be the key to putting the spirit of Mason's dead lover to rest. Mitchell does an amazing job of describing the effects of John's injury and his reactions to it. Even if ghosts and the paranormal aren't your thing (they aren't mine), I think this aspect is treated in a way that it won't be too onerous for skeptics to read.

Mitchell also does a nice job in having the main characters interact with their friends. These relationships are genuine, funny and help us learn more about our main characters. I hope she revisits this group so we can both see J & M some more and see more relationships blossom (the story leads me to believe a Tyler and Simon pairing was anticipated).

A sequel would help solve the only small problem I had with ths book - a niggling worry these young men wouldn't last beyond their safe college world. I'm given no firm reason to doubt, but either an epilogue, a short sequel or another book in the series would assure me they stuck together after graduation.

I always had a very story reactions to K.A. Mitchell's stories ,

either
I Hate them (like why am I reading...why put me through such self inflict pain )
or Love them(with few Kleenex and monologues in my head like - please let there still be 400 more pages or so to read i do not want it to be over yet)all in black and white no grey area try as I might

Clearly this is the one i LOVED
The premises was done crisp ,the characters had their flaws and strengths the ambiance was funny ,romantic tragic and a bit dark and the

John was the light of the story ,he is experimenting, breaking out of the shell, taking on life and living instead of choosing the Easy way out

Mason was a mess ,drinking to forget and forgetting to live,he blames himself and try to find a suitable punishment.
Though he was a complete As**** and never felt bad for the manipulation he is a good guy.

They both didn't walk into each others life but crashed in head on.
And like every crash it was unexpected ,fast, brutal, hurtful and left them with a missing limb but they got out living and finding the missing something in each other

All in all its worth a read. And i cannot wait for the Second of the Fragments series.

An unusual combination of themes. John, a former Olympic diver, suffers from visual disturbances and balance issues after a career-ending injury. Mason is mourning his dead boyfriend and avoiding his guilt and grief in alcohol and meaningless sex.

Neither is emotionally equipped to handle, or even want, anything resembling a relationship. Sexual sparks fly, but otherwise the two of them barely get along. They try to go separate ways. But something--or someone--keeps bringing them back together.

John has seen colors and auras since his injury. He can see people's moods in their auras. And when he looks at Mason, he's seeing more than one. Mason is haunted by the memory of his departed lover… and now it seems that Alex is more than a memory. He's still around.

This is not quite a paranormal or fantasy novel, though there is a ghost in it. It has much more the feel of a contemporary college romance with "broken" characters. John and Mason, and their supporting friends, are complex and well-drawn. With ample justification, each MC has a tendency to jerkish behavior, bitterness, and a sharp tongue. They've both been dealt exceedingly raw hands by life and their struggles are realistic, while revealing each man's inherent worthiness and capacity for love.

I found the auras fascinating and the ghost interesting enough. But the novel's strength is in the two main characters and their journeys toward healing, and each other.

Smoothly written, with Mitchell's usual smoldery sex scenes. 4 stars.

This was a pretty unusual story about an ex-Olympic diver with vertigo problems due to an injury and a college student that saw his lover die in a car accident and cannot seem to let go. The story has definite fantastical or at least spiritual elements woven into it, although its firmly set in the modern United States.
I liked the fact that John's disabilty was nothing I've ever read about in a book which made the whole thing a lot more interesting. The vertigo issue, the blinking, the problem with fast movement - to my mind, the book was pretty thorough in showing John's troubles in his everyday life and the way he deals with it - through his own eyes as well as through Masons'. That was definitely a very nice touch! I think what I liked the most about the story, though, is the fact that John and Mason's relationship doesn't follow the stereotypical routes: John isn't the typical virginal character, all innocent and a total pushover, but can look out for himsel; and the two main characters aren't falling all over each other - their relationship is swinging regularly from hot and heavy towards cold and distanced, and it takes a while thanks to John and Mason's issues to get to a more stable ground.
However, this book still felt a little bit too long at times. Yes, it takes time to work through personal issues but it felt sometimes a bit repetitive to me.

Alltogether a good book and I recommend reading it!

Argh. I had high hopes for this one. I thought "Ooo...cool! Auras." But, this was more of John not knowing what the colors meant until almost the end. Bummer. At least let us see him learning about them. I wanted to know what the colors meant.

This book hit home for me a little. I hated it. John losing his virginity to someone he doesn't even know like it's no big deal. Then all of a sudden he gets hit on and he's like "ooo...sex!" That was me. It made me feel like shit after and I didn't like that John was having random, nameless/faceless sex.

Mason was pretty much a dick the entire book and I wanted to strangle him. I never really even warmed up to him. He was pretty much "me me me" and even a dick to his friends.

This wasn't your typical romance because they really didn't like each other. They used each other for sex and then . No really...why did they fall into each others beds? What did they have in common besides knowing what it's like to lose your former life?

For me, there were a lot of loose ends. Is there going to be a 2nd book? If so, is it going to be about the Mason and John or someone different?

Overall, not what I was expecting :(

This story was unusual in the aspect that it had more than two MCs... at least to my way of thinking it did! Yes, John and Mason were what the story was about... but let's face it... Alex stole the show!!! This story couldn't have happened without him, and I dare anyone who reads this story to say that they were happy to see him go (thank goodness he is still hanging around!). Lizzy rocked as "the woman in the know" and all of the other secondary characters really rounded out the story well! I really hope that at some point the author will feel the need to revisit this wonderful group of characters and give us another happy ending... or two!!! I really liked the way the author wove the story around John's "abilities"... how we were able to watch as he slowly began to realize that what he thought he knew about his "curse" was actually just the tip of the iceberg and that he had more to offer to his friends and maybe even to others than he ever thought possible... maybe it isn't a curse after all!!! Mason didn't even know that he needed John, just thought he had a great ass and would make a great f*ck buddy, but Alex found ways to get through and set him straight (no pun intended)! Was this a great story? Maybe not great... but it did fulfill my like of BDSM as a kink as opposed to it as a lifestyle... and at one point it brought a tear to my eye... and let's face it... it had me giggling a time or three... so that makes this book a good read for me!!!
