Readers have already fallen in love with the quirky personalities that inhabit Heavenly Daze. In A Warmth in Winter , the unforgettable characters and humorous circumstances offer poignant lessons of God's love and faithfulness. The story centers around Vernie Bidderman, owner of Mooseleuk Mercantile and Salt Gribbon, the lighthouse operator, who despite the vast differences in their struggles are being taught about the ultimate failure and frustration of self-reliance.
Lori Copeland was born on 12 June 1941. She had a relatively late start in writing, breaking into publishing in 1982 when she was already forty years old. Over the next dozen years, her romance novels achieved much success, as was evidenced by her winning the Romantic Times Reviewer's Choice Award, The Holt Medallion, and Walden Books' Best Seller award. She has been inducted into the Missouri Writers Hall of Fame.
Despite her success in more mainstream romantic fiction, in 1995, she decided to switch focus. Her subsequent books have been in the relatively new subgenre of Christian romance. She has also collaborated with authors Angela Elwell Hunt or Virginia Smith on a series of Christian romance novels.
Lori and her husband of over forty years, Lance, live in Springfield, Missouri, surrounded by the beautiful Ozarks. They have three grown sons, three daughter-in-laws, and six wonderful grandchildren, and two great-granddaughters. She and her husband are very involved in their church, and active in supporting mission work in Mali, West Africa.
The third book in the Heavenly Daze series started out slow, but had me hooked after the third or fourth chapter.
In this installment we learn more about Vernie Bidderman, the owner of the mercantile who prides herself on running her business well, until someone from her past calls her and throws her whole world off kilter.
Also, the relationship between Salt Gribbon and Birdie Wester continues to develop as they both share a secret; however, Salt’s unwillingness to accept help puts a strain on the relationship, which may be its undoing.
Vernie and Salt are typical self reliant Mainers. In many parts of Maine, you have to be able to take care of yourself because you often live quite far from conveniences. A side effect of this lifestyle can be pride: I can do all things MYSELF. Both Vernie’s and Salt’s stories explore this heart issue and the path to forgiveness.
I want to talk about slang for a moment.
The authors use the term ‘Ayuh’ which in Mainah means ‘yes.’ The thing is this series takes place off the coast of Ogunquit, which is in southern Maine. I live in southern Maine and very few if any folks around here say, “Ayuh.” In fact, those who live in this part of Maine are picked on for living in a suburb of Massachusetts.
I was born and raised in Downeast Maine. That is ‘Ayuh’ country. It’s also where you are not considered to be a Mainer unless your family has been around since statehood. I might be exaggerating a tiny bit… or not, depending on who you ask. But I digress.
The locale of the slang is a minor issue, but as a lifelong Maine resident a noticeable one.

Series: Book 3 of 5 Grace in Autumn by Lori Copeland and Angela Hunt Published by Thomas Nelson Christian Fiction
And enjoy the latest adventures of our new friends in Heavenly Daze. We learn a lot more about Cap'n Salt and Bobby and Brittle knees, as Georgie calls her. Annie is in for some big surprises and Vernie has a surprise of her own and learns about the importance of forgiveness. Keep your tissues handy for the end as there will be a few tears before the end of this Christmas season.
Best one yet in this series! This outing is both heartwarming and illuminating in each chapter. The issue of pride is the focus in a couple of people and how it can take over and destroy our daily joy, if we let it. Reading this book is like going home to a small community, where everybody knows your name, but likely not all your secrets nor motivations.
A heartwarming Christmas story based on as island (Heavenly Daze) off the coast of Maine. If you enjoy stories of "angels among us," this one is for you. You also have adorable little children, a grumpy but very goodhearted grandfather and a collection of town residents. No sex, no profanity. A strong Christian message. A fun read.
After having read the first 2 books of the collection and having fallen in love with all the characters, I *really* enjoyed a continuation and redemption of their stories. Salt, his son, Birdie, Anne, AJ and Vernie all had further insights into their lives and the redemption of their stories was so encouraging!
"A Warmth in Winter" by co-writers Lori Copeland and Angela Hunt. This is book 3 in the "Heavenly Daze Series". I love it. This is one of those series where I feel like I have gotten to know the people and live in their midst.
This one is my favorite of the three I've read. It was pretty good actually! The other two were just 'okay'... I have two more to read in this series, but first I must read the latest M.C. Beaton Hamish MacBeth book which was published earlier this year. (YAY) Although I must say there is nothing in the Hamish MacBeth books to feed my spirit like in the Heavenly Daze series. I love the Bible scriptures scattered throughout these Heavenly Daze books. Keeps me focused on God and feeds my spirit as well as entertaining and that's always a good thing! Definitely this book was my favorite... it had more 'action' in it.
I liked the simplicity and warmth of this book. It follows three or four people who live on the Island of Heavenly Daze, just off the coast of Maine. The island is rumored to be inhabited by angels who live among the people and bring miracles to their lives. There is also a little love story that keeps you reading and hoping. Very uplifting.
The characters are so likeable. They are easy to relate to. It's highly likely when you read this book you will know or have known someone like one of the characters in the book. I have enjoyed the biblical references, they really make me think. I have enjoyed the off type of humor; gives me a good chuckle. This is my third book in the series and I now have #4. I plan to read them all.
I am not sure which book this is in the Heavenly Daze series, I believe it is #3. This one really has the Angels on the Maine island of Heavenly Daze working overtime to care for the 30 mortals who live on the island. You can just about feel the chill as the people walk around or cross the water to the mainland. The writing is good and the characters are like old friends to the reader
This was an inspiring Christmas story about family, forgiveness and unity. It is 3rd of a series of 4 but I have not read the others. Just happened upon this one first and decided to read it for December.
Turns out this is part of a series. Now, I'll need to go to the beginning of the series, but it made sense anyhow. So far, I've enjoyed all books I've read by Lori Copeland. They are calm, peaceful, and full of people seeking faith.
Local Maine story of an older man who takes care of a lighthouse. He has a son who is struggling with alcohol addictions and two small children. He ends up taking the children from his son, and trying to raise them without anyone noticing in the local town. I enjoyed the references to Maine.
