This book was offered free at Amazon.com some time ago, but it got shoved to the back burner and then, alas, totally forgotten until it popped up again - this time as a freebie for Kindle Unlimited subscribers (I signed up recently on a trial basis). When I read the description, I said why not - and then discovered I already have it.
And I finished it in a single day, albeit one when the weather was questionable and I had a little extra free time - it's only 237 pages and very easy to breeze through. It's also quite good; although I'll take a big issue with the "Entertainment Weekly" claim that it's for fans of Robert B. Parker's "smart but tough-as-nails heroes," former boxer and book author Jack Rhodes makes for an interesting character. His wife, Sara, blew her head off with a shotgun just as he was starting to gain success as a writer. After a 15-month stint as a nearly drop-dead alcoholic, he begins to write again and becomes wildly successful with a series of mysteries about a serial murderer simply called the Killer.
This book, the first in a series, begins as all that success begins to go to hell in a handbasket with an especially grisly murder seemingly based on Jack's first book (he's now in the middle of writing the fourth). Problem is, the real murder took place before Jack's first book was published. Is it a copycat? Or did Jack's descent into an alcoholic stupor include acts so dark that even he can't remember? Then, a second murder is discovered - linked to yet another of his books - and (no surprise), Jack becomes Suspect No. 1 and goes on the run in an attempt to prove his innocence and, hopefully, prevent yet another murder that could be based on his in-progress novel.
I do have one nit to pick (which I acknowledge comes because I'm a writer by profession myself, but totally nonfiction). I know using "alright" instead of "all right" is acceptable in some circles, but definitely not in mine. Interspersed throughout, it was like fingernails on a blackboard every time I encountered it. Enough, already!
All told, this debut novel is well worth the time I spent reading it. In fact, the follow-up - Killer in the Hills - is available free through Kindle Unlimited, and yes, I grabbed it. Stay tuned!

A gripping thriller where Jack Rhodes has lost fifteen months of his memories and does not know if he is guilty of the murders that he thought he made up. An intense story follows as Jack struggles to continue on with his life while it unravels around him. A fascinating and clever plot unfolds that kept me enthralled. Thanks Stephen Carpenter for a stimulating read. I anticipate a suspenseful ride in your next book.

This book started off good, but somewhere along the way it got lost and went downhill fast. The beginning was really interesting wondering what is happening and who is doing everything. I loved the killers chapters and the way everything was being slowly being revealed. One thing I did hate throughout was it was a bit too descriptive for my tastes. Not horrible so, but enough that it kept making me stop and think really? Did we need that much detail in the description? It is one thing that can bug me. Like calling out every name band of everything - I don't need it. It always makes me thing of product placement in movies and tv - like is the author being paid to advertise for the brands?
Besides the descriptive, I was enjoying the book. But things just unraveled about halfway through and the end...the end was just too much. Now I need to add some spoilers here so don't read ahead if you don't want to know. I told him how the killer showed up at his house and he managed to get out of the handcuffs and get to his secret gun and shoot the killer, but not dead. Then when the killer shows up again he just happens to be right next to another loaded gun and he just happens to be able to again shoot the killer. It was just a bit much. My husband was just like what? He just happens to have loaded guns all over the place? Yeah. One gun okay - the shotgun that was his dead fiances....that I am not buying. Then I told him what happened after that and he was just like wait...the book isn't over yet? I said nope - it just keeps going! Really it went on too long. Like right after that maybe have an epilogue chapter where you sum up everything, how he went to get help and moved to NYC to be with the lawyer lady and how things are good now. I don't need to see him do all of that because...well because the story was over when the killer died. And the author should never try and write a sex scene into his books. It just didn't work. Yes, you don't really 'see' them having sex, but the way the scene was written was just incredibly awkward. Not the best way to wrap up a book, which is unfortunate since the first half was pretty good.

Fast-paced, well-written escapist fun. I needed a book to disappear into and this one held up. I usually pick up something like Stephen King when I want to get lost for a while, but "Killer" really was quite a good substitute.
Recommended for those who like suspense novels and want a quick read.

Weird and trippy and clever and an unsettling surprise, this was a gritty and dark book that for some reason I could NOT put down.
Jack Rhodes goes on a terrible bender after his fiancee's suicide and does not get sober until fifteen months later, when he wakes up in the hospital as a suspect in a murder. He cannot remember anything that's happened to him during his months as a besotted drunk, and is fortunately cleared of the murder before he gets out of the hospital.
After getting his life back to some semblance of normal again, he deals with the pain of his loss and shame by writing. Constantly writing, and the book he later publishes (called "Killer") just pours out of him. It is a murder mystery, and quickly turns into a series of three books, dealing with a mysterious and elusive serial killer who targets young women, and the main character in the books is a police detective whose character is eerily reminiscent of Jack's dead fiancee.
Life gets easier for Jack after his books become wildly popular bestsellers. He is recognized on airplanes, made rich through the sales of the novels, and is even working on a fourth and final installment where, his publisher promises, he'll reveal Killer's true identity once and for all.
But one day, he's summoned back to California from his new home in Vermont. The police there have uncovered a body in a shallow grave. Her name is Beverly Grace - eerily similar to the name of the victim in Jack's first novel: Grace Beverly. Other details mirror his book. But it's not a copycat murder: this one happened BEFORE Jack's first book was published.
In a frantic journey across the country, Jack visits the scenes of his other two books and finds that each holds another murder nearly identical to those in his books, but which were committed before the books were published. He even knows things the police never released to the public. Soon there is a manhunt for Jack, who fears he is losing his mind, knowing he's innocent but not knowing how that could even be possible.
I thought this was a terrific plot, twisted and dark, wholly surprising and remarkably well developed. Although the last couple of chapters seemed a bit predictable, the rest of the book was a compelling and disturbing read. I got this one on Amazon.com at a ridiculously low price; probably the best bang for my reading buck this year.

Killer was very fast-paced and well done (that is if you like mystery/horror stories). I read it in two days, which I never do. It's a story of a reclusive mystery writer who wrote stories about a serial killer whose stories proved to be events that actually happened - before he wrote the stories, making him the #1 suspect in the murders. The problem is, during the times when the murders occurred, he was in an 18 month stretch of heavy drinking caused by the suicide of his fiance and he has no memory of that time in his life. The story follows him has he alludes the police and FBI trying to figure out how he could have learned about the girls who were murdered, trying to prove he wasn't capable of such horrible things. I really liked this book.

I completely enjoyed meeting Jack Rhodes and the supporting cast. This book was well written in my opinon with a great story flow. I was busy trying to figure out the twist of what was going on, coming to a couple of erroneous conclusions midway through. Delighted that I couldn't immediately figure out the plot, I continued to enjoy this offering. I will definitely pick up another book by this author in the near future. The contrasts between all the characters, especially Jack and Dave, was very intriguing, keeping your mind racing about the connection between the two. Again, an excellent read!

Very quick read and truly a great story. Somewhat cliche in the whole gotta have a sex scene with a hot chic thing (note sometimes these just aren't necessary to the story and seem contrived). Other than that a good mystery great pace creepy character... My kind of book.

Featherton, Vt. Jack had moved into his cabin.
Sheriff Claire Boyle came to welcome him to the community.
It wasn’t just a social call though.
Detective Marsh (LAPD homicide) had called her about a murder.
LAPD Parker Center. Detective Marsh hands Jack a manila envelope.
Grace Beverly does that name ring a bell? A name in the 1st. murder book Killer (2/2/2002) Jack wrote.
Temescal Canyon, Palisades. Newly built Condo’s. A backhoe uncovered a female corpse of Beverly Grace. Same MO as in the book.

A very awesome book cover, great font & writing style. A very well written murder mysteries book. It was very easy for me to read/follow from start/finish & never a dull moment. There were no grammar/typo errors, nor any repetitive or out of line sequence sentences. Lots of exciting scenarios, with several twists/turns & a great set of unique characters to keep track of. This could also make another great murder mysteries movie, or better yet a mini TV series. There is no doubt in my mind this is a very easy rating of 5 stars.

Jack Rhodes is in purgatory. Not really dead but certainly not alive, ever since the suicide of his fiancée Sara, he has spent every day with his best friend, Jack Daniels. He couldn’t face much less deal, with the sight that he saw in his backyard. Sara, lying in the grass with her face missing and the shotgun lying ingenuously next to her is too much to deal with.
More than fifteen months passes before the black, empty existence slowly lifts and he finds himself handcuffed to a hospital bed with his other arm in a cast. Slowly the world he has tried so long to escape begins to return, leaving him more questions than answers. Faster than his return to reality, the questions are answered. A cop informs him that he is suspected of the murder of Richard Bell. One of the good things about drunks is that they are surrounded by people that aren’t. I listened to the audio version and I'm not sure if it made it better or worse. I'm going with worse because the narrator was quite monotone. However, the story itself isn't great. Right off the bat it starts with a comment about how most people who complete suicide leave a note. That's a myth. But then there were just so many implausible scenarios. The part about the Mafia guy really didn't fit, nor did it need to be included. And the ending wrapped up a little too neatly. I prefer a "happy" ending, but I also prefer one that's realistic. Nonetheless, the premise was interesting and different and it had the makings of a good book. I might give the second book a try, but not on Audible.

Thirteen years after its publication, KILLER is a thriller that remains relevant. Stephen Carpenter is an exceptional writer. Jack Rhodes—the MC—tells the story with a narrative cadence that’s both smooth and jarring, depending if this boxer-turned-author is remembering “(his) Sara”—who dies by one of the grisliest suicides I’ve read in a book—or the events that led to her tragic death. The story reads quickly (because you get caught up in Jack’s horror and become desperate to know if he escapes his internal torture), but every word hits hard. It’s a fantastic tale. I highly recommend if you’re a fan of blunt, fictional storytelling that forces you to face very real fears.

Over the course of several days I slipped away from my regular life to fall into the disturbing world of writer Jack Rhodes.
A darkness winds along on the edges of sanity as Jack tries to cling to his sobriety. What is true(?) What is a work of fiction(?)
I could barely put this book down; snatching moments to drop into the creepy world of “Dave”. I highly recommend this novel. It has shades of a detective noir style of long ago, but develops into a psychological horror-filled world where sanity and sobriety aren’t always what will save a person, sometimes one needs to dig deep into his own darkness in order to find the way out.

I just finished reading Killer by Stephen Carpenter an excellent murder/mystery novel.The hero Jack Rhodes reminds me of my all time favorite fictional detective Archie Goodwin from the Nero Wolfe series the smart tough guy with a heart of tarnished gold. The novel is a paranoid fueled tale that kept me reading even after I swore to myself just finish this chapter then I would take a break. I highly recommend this novel to any mystery readers looking for a new book to get lost in. I am now getting started on Killer In The Hills the next Jack Rhodes novel.

Suppose I prefer my heroes a bit rough around the edges, flawed and far from perfect - and Jack Rhodes is definitely that. Shaped by the tragic loss of his fiancee and his slide into alcoholism this is a man with more demons than most. But what about the series of books he wrote? What was their inspiration? Were they really just the imaginings of a troubled mind? Or was there another source?

An eventful quick but good read
I don't read many "true crime" fictions so I don't have much to compare. This story was nicely written and in a believable way. Not difficult to read or too technical but entertaining. The storyline is solid. Keeps you guessing until it doesn't. It is more like a 7 OUT OF 10, but alas it is a five star system and hence the 4 stars.

Pretty good for a self published book. There is a chronology error, but it's really well written. The characters are cliched, but solid. The plots got a unique spin on the crime writer wrapped up with his fans thing. I don't know where the series is going to go from here, since everything is pretty neatly wrapped up, but as it's own story, it's worth a read.

Spectacluar horrifying crime novels!
Spellbinding stories of a brilliant psychological demented killer on the loose will keep you reading night and day! Incredibly complex and horrifying stories that let you see what's going on in the killer 's mind that make you cringe. Excellent work!

I’m looking forward to the next book
I think the story was well written and for the life of me couldn’t figure out how the author was going to pull it off and still have a good guy at the end. I did predict the ending though but I still enjoyed the book and will read more of his books. Quick read.

Keep on truckin’.
The parallel story of the killer was slightly confusing at first but was definitely necessary. Lots of twists and turns and the scene in the storage room was my favorite. I really didn’t expect that. Got to read the next two now.

Excellent story. The kind of story that grabs you and doesn't let go. Complex, detailed and very interesting. Alittle scary wondering how he was going to get out of being charged for the murders he wrote in his popular books. This author knows how to write a very enjoyable tale. Truly a good read.

I think I would have liked this book more if I read it instead of listening to it. Noah Michael Levine wasn't the right narrator for this book. He fell flat and exiting times in the book. Otherwise the book was ok. It started off great and just got weird towards the end.

A very exciting mystery that keeps the reader guessing well into the book. I really enjoyed the natural feeling of confusion for our main character. His escape was quite far-fetched, but exciting nonetheless.

I read this along time ago, just got my first Kindle and this is one of the first books I read on it. Fast paced and I really enjoyed this read.

Great hero.
Felt both mysterious and familiar. Sort of suspected the ending but that was okay. Nicki was delicious. She can cook clams for me anytime.
