One of the great forerunners of 20th century painting This richly illustrated and expert study follows the artist from the early gloom-laden paintings in which he captured the misery of peasants and workers in his homeland, through his bright and colourful Parisian period, to the work of his final years, spent under a southern sun in Arles. Here, at last, he found the light that produced the unmistakable Van Gogh style. At Arles, Saint-Rémy and Auvers-sur-Oise, in the feverish burst of creative energy that marked his last two-and-a-half years, he produced the 465 paintings on which his immortality rests.

Van Gogh craved recognition during his lifetime but was denied it until after his self-inflicted death. Today he is universally seen as one of the great forerunners of painting of the 20th century, and one of the tragic masters of art. About the

The story and works of beautiful human being who gave the world and his works of art so much of himself that there was nothing left for himself. His agony in living is clearly expressed in his paintings as well as his joy in the colours and the nature he tried to capture. The book is a tiny glimpse into a journey of madness, love, betrayal and genius.
To see the world through Vincent's eyes is truely a wonderous experience but scary and overwhelming also.
Some photos are included of his work over the years including Sunflowers and of course The starry night but some lesser known to me at least like Cafe terrace at night: Arles and Monmartre: Paris which is to me beautiful, simplistic and vibrant.
I love this man who gave so much of himself to his art..... "I put my heart and soul into my work and have lost half my mind in the process" Vincent Van Gogh

Well done review of the life of Vincent Van Gogh with prints of his art and snatches of his personal letters to his brother. Concludes with a timeline and some photos of places & people in his life. Also an in depth look at the meaning in his use of color and space.

All in all a tragedy. I'd prefer to take Don McLean's take that "this world was never good enough for one as beautiful as you." I wonder how he would be diagnosed today, with all the labels we now have for mental illness and social difficulties and isolation/depression. Add to that his epilepsy at the end.

Like so many artists, writers and singers his popularity and mythical height grew immensely after his suicide. Sad.

Van Gogh by Ingo F. Walther - Taschen Basic Art 2.0

"I put my heart and soul into my work, and have half lost my mind in the process."

I picked up this book after finishing The Letters of Vincent van Gogh. Like all books of the Taschen series, it includes a biographical account, the analysis of paintings and style, quotes, etc.

After going into so much depth in 500+ pages of Van Gogh's letters, this brief matter-of-fact account seemed pale by comparison. However, it was cool to see some of the paintings which Van Gogh described working on in his letters but I haven't actually seen before. Overall, a nice enough book of a series I respect.

The paintings are printed in full color, the paper and binding are of good quality.

Vincent schilderde in Brabant, in Den Haag, in Drenthe.

"Van Gogh had failed in every aspect of his life. He saw only one way out." This man died thinking he failed in life. Can you imagine how sad is that? My heart is broken in two pieces though.

Van Gogh just emmaned pure talent, he painted with so much pasion that his feelings it could see reflected in his works. My intention isn't romanticize his tragic life or how depression consumed him, I just wanna express those feelings of melancholy, sadness and nostalgia this reading caused in me.

Impresionism and post-impresionism are my favorite artistic trends and here is one of those painters which always caught my attention. I have a lot of things to say about his life but I don't think I could be able to expose in a correctly way so I rather to keep it to myself.

Vincent looked for love in a world who it couldn't give him back, he was underestimated in life but raised when passed away just like he thought. While he could, sought to comfort people trough his paintings and he's doing it until now. 💙

In the past few months, I've become absolutely obsessed with van Gogh. His work and life fascinates me, and I've been keen to read something more than just Wikipedia articles for a while now. This book - out of everything available - was what I ended up with, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. It combines details on van Gogh's life, quotes from him and people around him, plus analysis on his artwork (and also beautiful pictures!) to create a very detailed, insightful book.

"En mi trabajo arriesgo mi vida y por su causa mi razón se ha hundido a medias".

Un libro que ayuda a conocer de cerca el trabajo e influencias de Van Gogh, además de su profunda tristeza y soledad, a lo largo de su vida. Aprendí mucho sobre sus obras, la relación de estas con sus estados de ánimo y la idea que tenía de plasmar al mundo y la naturaleza.

Muy hermoso y triste.

Having recently visited the LUME van Gogh exhibit at Newfields art museum, my interest was piqued about Vincent van Gogh. What contributed to his unique personality? What was the deal with him cutting off his ear? Why did he shoot himself?

As is typical for me, I did a bit of searching to find some books to read to learn more. I found a few highly-rated biographies, but most were over 500 pages. I really didn’t want to learn THAT much more. Side note: this was my mindset when I wrote my biography of “mad” King Ludwig — I thought many people who wanted to visit his castles might want to learn his basic story without getting bogged down in every minor detail of his life.

So, I ended up checking out 2 books, each with many illustrations and each under 100 pages in length. They were “Van Gogh” by Ingo Walther, and “The Life and Works of Vincent Van Gogh” by Janice Anderson. I would recommend both if you’d like to learn some basics on van Gogh’s life and works.

Vincent was born in 1853, one year to the day after his parents’ firstborn, a stillborn boy that had also been given the name Vincent. Vincent’s father was a pastor and for a time, Vincent considered following the same path.

After trying various different career choices, Vincent decided to try painting as a vocation. This happened in his late 20s, and he produced an amazing amount of paintings before his death at 37.

He lived for a while in southern France, in a building he calls “the yellow house.” His roommate there is fellow artist Gauguin, who seemed more stable than poor Vincent. Gauguin and van Gogh had disagreements over philosophies of art. Gauguin decided to move out, and this pushed Vincent over the edge. He followed Gauguin out of the house, threatening him with a knife. The next morning, Gauguin found that Vincent had cut off a part of his own ear with knife and was now in the hospital. One of van Gogh’s famous self-portraits shows him with his ear bandaged.

Vincent had many struggles in life. His paintings never sold (he gave one portrait to the man he used as a model, and the man used it to patch a hole in his chicken house). He relied on his younger brother and closest friend, Theo, to pay his basic bills. He was rejected romantically and never married. He was a complete failure in everything that his contemporaries regarded as important.

In 1889, realizing his instability, he went to live in an insane asylum near St Remy, France. Here he created some of his most famous paintings, “Starry Night” being one example. “That is the eternal question,” he wrote to Theo, “is life all that there is of life or do we only know one hemisphere before our death? Speaking for myself I have no idea what the answer is but the sight of the stars always starts me thinking.”

In July 1890, feeling hopeless after more life struggles, Vincent went into a field with a gun and shot himself in the chest. He dragged himself back to the asylum, where he died two days later.

“It is only too true that a lot of artists are mentally ill — it’s a life which, to put it mildly, makes one an outsider. I’m alright when I completely immerse myself in work, but I’ll always remain half crazy.”

Pełna tęsknoty do nieskończoności natury, prób uchwycenia dynamiki rzeczywistości i ciągła walka o byt, przetrwanie i oddech.

I can't change the fact that my paintings don't sell. But the time will come when people will recognize that they are worth more than the value of the paints used in the picture. 😔

Although only hitting the tip of the iceberg of Van Gogh’s life, this book features some of the most prominent of his paintings from each main location he lived and provides context for them.

Art History is the one class I took in college that was a revelation to me. I loved how history and visual interpretation combined together. Artists and art are just interesting too. I am quite a long time removed from college now and I often find myself yearning to go back into the art history world and to expand my appreciation of art. Fortunately, this book did just that for me.

Vincent Van Gogh is larger than life. Almost so that you forget who he really was and only the crazy things he did stick in your mind. This book tells some of his biography, but the author does an excellent job of tying moments in his life to his art. This is an overview of both Van Gogh's life and art which I suppose is obvious from the book's short length. However, just because it is short, does not mean you don't need to read the book carefully to get the most out of it. The writing is academic and some sections about Van Gogh's paintings require a fair amount of attention to fully comprehend. I was completely engrossed in this book and learned a lot about Van Gogh. His life is incredibly tragic which I had somehow forgotten, but what really made me happy was that I looked at his art in a new and deeper way by the end of the book. All credit for that goes to the author. I've tried some art history books and found them too dry or not as engaging as I hoped, but I really enjoyed this one and plan on keeping it on my shelf for years to come.

I'm not the most enthusiastic art lover, however, I have always liked Van Gogh. I am always drawn to his paintings whenever I find myself in a museum and have always been fascinated by his style and more so his defiance.

It was great to have so much of his life's work packed into one book. This book tells the story of his life and includes paintings along the way, as well as quotes from Van Gogh himself. It's amazing to see his style develop as his life does and you can literally see it happening.

Highly recommended to anyone with even the smallest interest in Van Gogh.

I'd love to own all of Taschen's Basic Art books. I just picked up their Van Gogh book which has great prints of a lot of his work. I've read the first few chapters which explore Van Gogh's life and career as an artist. Very interesting read so far, but even better are all the great pages of artwork.

Many of us claim to understand his work but did you take a step-back? Is it the same perspective? This short (but very useful) book sparked my interest in reading "Lust for life" by Irving Stone and when it comes to biographies, he never disappoints.

Concise book, written chronologically. High quality color pictures. I'm impressed by the depth of the descriptions by the author. I am not an artist, but I can follow what is being said. This is my first book on Van Gogh. I'm hooked. I need more of his art.

I couldn't put this book down, moreover the length is deceiving. In my opinion it largely merits re-reading and thorough re-visiting of the art as well as the prose that accompanies the masterpieces of this sadly tragic, troubled genius.

As a few examples:

'You can feel the stars and the infinity of the sky. Since Life, in spite of everything, is like a fairytale. You know, people who do not believe in the sun, in surrounding like this, are godless.'

I am not sure if I agree with the last part, nor do I feel a belief in God is required for anyone. I dont think van Gogh was religious but clearly he was deeply spiritual and in my opinion if one is motivated to living by a joie de vivre, by some positive energies out there, it doesn't matter if they are agnostic or aethiest. I feel art, colour, nature and the skies WERE van Gogh's personal God representation.

'The cypresses constantly occupy my thoughts: I want to paint something similar to my sunflower paintings...it's amazing that nobody has yet painted them as i see them, in their lines and proportions they are as beautiful as Egyptian obelisks.'

And how bittersweet that he was able to foretell his own demise, light years ahead of his time:

'It is only too true that a lot of artists are mentally ill. it's a life which, to put it mildly, makes one an outsider. I'm alright when I completely immerse myself in work but I will always remain half crazy.'

Really do yourselves a favour and read this, you get the added advantage of enjoying some of the most beautiful paintings in creation.

I thoroughly enjoyed this coffee table book about Van Gogh! I enjoyed seeing so many of his paintings printed beautifully, described and analyzed.

The book was organized by place and time, so it was cool to see the author analyze how his style and preferences changed and developed over time.

I would’ve loved a little explanation of how Van Gogh became the renowned artist we all know. It’s fascinating to think how he died believing he was a complete failure.

I appreciated the author’s analysis of Van Gogh’s love for portraits - most of which were done of plain, everyday people - and for mundane landscapes and minute bits of nature. Van Gogh saw and appreciated the world in such a unique way. I am inspired!
