Whether describing twilight, a toothpick, the ritual of shaving or the act of going upstairs, his gaze is ingenuous, humble, amazed. Mute objects, fleeting gestures, changeless passions: Král forces us to look at them anew. Each limpid, graceful essay is a brief voyage of discovery in which lowly objects and everyday actions, so often unobserved, are transfigured. Petr Král has the unerring ability to perceive, to catch the commonplace by surprise and with the unsettling clarity see beyond the everyday to the fabric of life beneath.

About the author

Poet and essayist, Petr Král was born in Prague in 1941. Beginning his studies with film, he later joined the troupe of post-surrealists surrounding Vratislav Effenberger.

In 1968, Petr Král fled to Paris, reinventing himself as a writer—quickly adopting the French language—writing in both French and Czech, merging surrealistic principles with elements from the Beat generation in Routes du Paradis {Routes of Paradise} and Pour une Europe bleue {For a Blue Europe}.

After editing Le Surréalisme en Tchécoslovaquie {Surrealism in Czechoslovakia} in 1983, Král shifted to incidental introspection, defining himself as a poet of detours.

Petr Král´s most recent work includes: Éra živých {Those Alive}, Základní pojmy {Basic Notions}, Masiv a trhliny {Massif and Cracks} in Czech and Pour l'ange {For the Angel} in French.

Teksty świetne, błyskotliwe i trafne przeplatane są trochę nazbyt udziwnionymi, gdzie autor trochę się zakręca w mnogości metafor i językowych zawijasów.
Kilka zostanie ze mną na dłużej, będę do nich wracać.
Bardzo lubiłam czytać tę książkę po przebudzeniu, na rozruszanie mózgu, ożywienie myśli porcją surrealizmu.
Brawa dla tłumacza, musiał się porządnie nagimnastykować i za bardzo ciekawe posłowie, które dało szerszy kontekst.

Najlepsze momenty, kiedy dobrze opisane są jakieś chwilowe wrażenia i zabawne spostrzeżenia są niestety popsute przez te najgorsze, które trącą zbereźnym dziadem

Un livre qui admire le quotidien et le banal. Ce n’est pas un hasard si Milan Kundera en a fait la préface, lui, l’auteur du particulier.

Alors du café à la chemise, on assiste à la découverte d’une dimension cachée des choses qui se déploient déjà tellement sous nos yeux.

123 frammenti in cui l'ordinario viene visto con sguardo contemplativo e poetico.
C'è sobrietà della parola, senza rinunciare a un linguaggio amplissimo. Kràl celebra la quotidianità destrutturando e scovandoci dentro piccoli magici dettagli che capovolgono la percezione. La poesia si nasconde nelle piccole cose che ci circondano dal semplice caffè, all'attaccapanni, alla porta ecc.
Mi ha ricordato tantissimo "Abitare poeticamente il mondo" di Christian Bobin, anche se Kràl preferisce puntare sull'ironia.

[...] A volte passiamo davanti alla libreria l'intera mattina, semplicemente oziosi, tirando fuori a caso un volume dopo l'altro e rimettendoli a posto dopo aver brucato un paio di parole .. Non è perdere tempo, è come cominciare, ogni volta, una nuova e sconfinata, immemorabile, vita. Sfogliando il mondo intero in un colpo solo diventiamo noi stessi immortali, e continueremo ad esserlo quando un fulmine si abbatterà su di noi, qui e ora, sorprendendoci con un libro aperto in mano.

Una raccolta di pensieri sugli oggetti che fanno da sfondo alla nostra vita, che usiamo senza prestarci troppa attenzione. Come gli orologi sui quali posiamo frettolosamente lo sguardo nonostante scandiscano il tempo del nostro vivere, o la camicia pulita e stirata che indossiamo e agli occhi degli altri ci rappresenta più della pelle che ci copre, o l'attaccapanni con il quale solidalizzare perché riesce a mantenere la propria vera essenza nonostante si nasconda sotto il peso dei cappotti che gli appoggiamo sopra. Leggendo incappiamo poi in riflessioni sulle azioni che compiamo soprappensiero. Come ridere, ad esempio. A piangere si comincia subito, appena venuti al mondo, ma ridere... Quand'è che abbiamo riso davvero per la prima volta? Sicuramente non subito, perché la risata "nasce dal contatto con la comunità più ampia, dai primi conflitti con gli altri, dalle prime esperienze di fallimenti sociali e di patti amicali". E lo starnuto che arriva all'improvviso, che messaggio ci vuole dare se non quello che è sempre possibile sorprenderci e andare oltre i limiti che il corpo e lo spazio delimitano? Attraverso le riflessioni di Petr Král, alcune lunghe una pagina altre solo poche righe, racconti brevi che ricordano le tele di Magritte, scopriamo che tutto è poesia, perfino le azioni più volgari.

I struggled to get anything from this brief read (it took me about a day from cover to cover). I like the Pushkin Press and the books they put out, and I'm glad that they are willing to take risks - as this book is proof. Not every risk pays off, and this one didn't pay off for me. These essays are all highly 'poetic' - there's a surfeit of 'we' throughout, and a preponderance of references to naked women - but I couldn't say, on reaching the end of most, what the point had been.

(średnia arytmetyczna ze wszystkich ocen poszczególnych poezji) bardzo mi się podobało ale mam dwa minusy: pierwszy-chwilami zbyt przesadzone opisy; drugi-praktycznie w każdym rozdziale autor musiał powiedzieć coś o kobietach, albo jakieś porównanie, albo kobieta pojawia się bez ostrzeżenia i pełni duża funkcje.

I must confess I'm predisposed to like this book because a dear friend gave it to me. It is quite the strange little book, examining countless things I have taken for granted without ever questioning. It looks at these things with a fresh eye, one that focuses on the brevity of the experience. A very existentially minded encyclopedia. Well worth a read, but I encourage you to read slowly, the longer you reflect the better it gets.

Miało swoje momenty, jednak seksistowskie wstawki przebijające na wielu stronach (jak: 'usta kobiety, co widać teraz wyraźnie, zwisają mizerną fałdą, skóra pod bluzką zdradza niemal staropanieńską zleżałość; pewnie okaże się też dziobata i wzdragliwie drżąca, kto wie, co tam w ogóle ma między nogami) całkiem mi zepsuły przyjemność czytania.
