Modern Judaism: An Oxford Guide provides a comprehensive introduction to all aspects of contemporary Jewish life and thought, covering social, cultural, and historical aspects of Judaism alongside theological issues. The book as a whole is concerned broadly with the period since the end of the eighteenth century, but its main focus is on contemporary Judaism and emerging trends. The main subject is Judaism as a religion, but this is interpreted broadly, in line with Jewish self-perception and with the realities of the situation today, which encompass avowedly secular, atheist forms of Jewish identity.
Nicholas Robert Michael de Lange (often known simply as N. de Lange) (7 August 1944, Nottingham) is Professor of Hebrew and Jewish Studies at the University of Cambridge and is an ordained Reform rabbi. He was taught and ordained by the British Reform rabbi Ignaz Maybaum, a disciple of Franz Rosenzweig.
Reading to evaluate for possible classroom use. Nice spread of topics. (Though, I notice the editors specify they want to acknowledge previously silenced voices, yet include no chapters on the less-known Jewish communities.) I am an admirer of de Lange's work, and he edits some nice volumes.
