Sabaki means staying open to the world at large and responding to others in a way that blends energies in new directions. Whether it is a question of repelling an attack or building relationships, the combined energy that comes from sabaki is an effort of cooperation, openness, and respect. Whether you are training for health, competition, or self-defense, The Sabaki Method can show you how to turn defense into offense, anticipate attacks, condition the body, and focus the mind. Kancho Ninomiya takes the mystery out of karate.
This book is a non-standard book of karate. Most of the book is devoted to moving in karate with regards to sparring and fighting. See also Fighting Karate and More Fighting Karate.
This book came out in the 1990's. I was aware of the Sabaki challenge and had rented some videos on the competitions, but hadn't read the book. One of my friends recommended that I look at it. The author came from Mas Oyama school of Kyukushin karate, which is known for its (limited with know punches to the head) brutal full contact fighting.
I found the discussions and education on the positioning and fight movement quite useful. The use of blind spots, pendulum power, and foot work is really exceptional. I recommend martial art readers to look into this book. I picked mine up used. There are many videos on Youtube that are also useful to see the training methods in action.
