Now that world comes vividly to life in a brilliant debut novel of shocking realism, powerful insight, and searing suspense.

Alexandra Cooper, Manhattan's top sex crimes prosecutor, awakens one morning to shoking news: a tabloid headline announcing her own brutal murder. Was Isabella targeted by a stalker or -- mistaken for Alex -- was she in the wrong place at the wrong time? In an investigation that twists from the back alleys of lower Manhattan to the chic salons of the Upper East Side. Alex knows she'sin final jeopardy...and time is running out. Linda Fairstein (born 1947) is one of America's foremost legal experts on crimes of violence against women and children. She served as head of the sex crimes unit of the Manhattan District Attorney's office from 1976 until 2002 and is the author of a series of novels featuring Manhattan prosecutor Alexandra Cooper.

Like Fairstein, Alex ('Coop') Cooper is in charge of the Special Victims Unit of the Office. She works closely with NYPD detectives Mike Chapman and Mercer Wallace. The 17th book in her best-selling series - DEVIL'S BRIDGE - launches in paperback in June, 2016. The 18th novel - KILLER LOOK - debuts on July 26th.

This year, Fairstein will debut a new series for Middle Grade readers - 8-12 years old. Her kid sleuth, Devlin Quick, appears in INTO THE LION'S DEN in November, 2016. The series is an homage to Nancy Drew, whose books inspired Linda's two careers - in crime fiction and in the law.

Ms. Fairstein is an honors graduate of Vassar College (1969) and the University of Virginia School of Law (1972). She joined the Manhattan District Attorney's office in 1972 as an Assistant District Attorney. She was promoted to the head of the sex crimes unit in 1976. During her tenure, she prosecuted several highly publicized cases, including the "Preppy Murder" case against Robert Chambers in 1986.

Linda Fairstein left the District Attorney's office in 2002, and has continued to consult, write, lecture and serve as a sex crimes expert for a wide variety of print and television media outlets, including the major networks, CNN, MSNBC among others. Ms. Fairstein is often called to provide her opinion on high profile prosecutions including: Michael Jackson's molestation charges in 2004, Kobe Bryant's sexual assault charges, and Scott Peterson's trial. She is also a frequent speaker on issues surrounding domestic abuse.

Ms. Fairstein lives in Manhattan and on Martha's Vineyard with her husband, Michael Goldberg. Her novels draw on Ms. Fairstein's legal expertise as well as her knowledge of and affection for the rich history of the city of New York.

Im case any of you aren’t educated on Linda’s past, let me enlighten you. This woman sent 5 innocent young black males to jail and tortured them throughout investigations and interrogations. If you choose to support this woman in any way, you are just as disgraceful as she is. I hope you writing career rots just like you will after judgment day.

I thought, as a Law and Order SVU fan, this might be something I might like (except in book format). Well, it was all right at first. I liked Alexandra. A very strong willed character, although she had her girlie moments, she wasn’t a stone cold woman of ice either. That was good. Her friendship with Mike Chapman was really fun to read. Chapman made the story more interesting with his sense of humor. His jabs towards Alexandra (and vice versa) were fun to read.

The plot was all right. It wasn’t really that exciting. The only twist was who Isabella’s male companion was, but it wasn’t that shocking or revealing. However, I’m glad Alexandra didn’t mope about and became dramatic diva over that moment. I do like seeing her all up in a temper though - that was really entertaining to watch.

So, the plot was rather mediocre, and although I did like the characters, it wasn’t enough to make me fully enjoy the book. What rather killed it for me was, it was rather dry. So dry, it took me a while to finish a book that only had 336 pages. Oh boy, did it ever drag. On top of that, Alexandra also handles many other cases and it’s all mixed in with the main case featuring Isabella. Now although this is realistic, to me it felt like it was added to fill in pages of the book. It wasn’t exciting, it didn’t particularly interest me, and there were many minor characters added you could not keep track without at least back tracking to figure out which case she’s talking about now. It came to the point where I skimmed through most of the last third of the book, read the grand climax (which wasn’t that great in the first place) and then I was done.

I was just curious what was so great about these series and I just wanted to see how it was like. I realize this is the first book so of course, perhaps books after this one are better. Yet, I’m not sure if I’m going to get the second book. If it’s like this one, I will pass. This might not be for everyone, but those that are into legal thrillers are welcome to try and see for yourselves.

Final Jeopardy is book one of the Alexandra Cooper series by Linda Fairstein. Alexandra Cooper through her life was perfect with a lovely man to love and job she adores. One morning Alexandra Cooper opened her morning paper and saw the front page heading stating she was dead and when Alexandra Cooper realise that the body belongs to her friend Isabella Lascar. With the help of Detective Mike Chapman started to investigate her murder. The readers of Final Jeopardy will follow the twist and turns in Alexandra Cooper and Detective Mike Chapman investigation to see who murdered Isabella.

I have read other books in the Alexandra Cooper series, and I enjoy them so much I decided to start at the beginning. I enjoyed reading Final Jeopardy it provided me with background information on the main characters of the Alexandra Cooper series. Linda Fairstein does a great job in incorporating her working knowledge when developing the plot and settings for Final Jeopardy. I like Linda Fairstein portrayal of her characters and the way they intertwine with each other.

Final Jeopardy will highlight for the readers the devastation that stalking can have on everyone involved. Also, the readers of Final Jeopardy will learn how the Sex Crimes Prosecution Unit and New York law enforcement work together.

I recommend this book.

Craptastic writing. I listened to the audio version narrated by the spectacular Barbara Rosenblat, which is its only saving grace.

I'm mortified that this woman built her literary career on the wrongful conviction of the Central Park Five. How does Linda Fairstein sleep at night?

I just went on a legal kick and am getting immersed in the world of Alexandra Cooper. My mom had some of her books and I of course just grabbed a random one (The Deadhouse) and remember being really annoyed by the character of Mike Chapman. Yes, even at the age of 21 I called him an ass and didn't see what his friendship with Alexandra (Alex) was all about. Through the years I randomly grabbed and read two of her other books and never thought about reading them in order. I finally decided to do that and started in book #1, "Final Jeopardy."

"Final Jeopardy" takes place in New York in 1997. The lead character is Alexandra Cooper. Alex works for the DA's office and heads up the Sex Crimes Unit. Alex is passionate about putting away those who would rape and abuse women and children. When one of Alex's old friends, Hollywood movie star Isabella is murdered at her Martha Vineyard's home questions abound. Was Alex the real target? Or was a stalker after Isabella? Alex is told to stay out of the case, but she helps out her friend Mike Chapman, a detective with the NYPD with the investigation.

I liked parts of Alex that we see her. She is shown as a wonderful advocate and she knows her stuff legally. Fairstein shows attorneys coming to Alex to discuss cases and she provides them information and help along the way. She respects her boss, Paul, and wants to make sure she obeys his directive about staying out of the case, but she can't help being pulled in.

Probably the only thing I disliked about the character is how she allows Mike Chapman to talk about her. He is derogatory to the extreme and the only time I could even stand this character was when something came to light about someone close to Alex and Mike called their mutual friend Mercer and they came and hung out with her. Fairstein via Alex tries to make it that Mike just can't bother with being PC, but he is outright nasty about women and derogatory towards other races, so enjoy reading that mess. I started to skim anytime he talked. The only slightly cute thing about these two is their shared love of Jeopardy and betting on the Final Jeopardy question.

Mercer is in this, but barely it felt like. He is dealing with a serial rapist and I wanted to hear more about that case. The case dealing with Alex's friend was nasty at times. I wondered why Alex was even friends with her since she barely seemed to like her.

Alex has a boyfriend named Jed who seemed like a non-entity throughout the book.

We hear about Alex's parents and brothers' but they don't figure in this at all. We just hear how her father became rich and how he passed on that wealth to his children.

The writing was pretty crisp and Fairstein proves enough legal insights to make you gnash your teeth at how terribly sex crimes used to be prosecuted back in the day. Heck, they still don't sound awesome. I have to mention though that my Kindle version had a ton of typos. It started to get a bit distracting after a while. I wish this had been re-checked after being released via Kindle.

The flow was good, though there were a couple of hard pause points. One was when Alex goes into her doomed lost love and I maybe laughed. I also had some wine at that point so maybe that was what was making me crack up. It was very Gothic Romance for a bit there.

The setting of New York and Martha's Vineyard is interesting. Fairstein obviously studies the locations that appear in her books, so enjoy reading the history of a lot places. That does distract from the overall plot at times, and I hope in later books Fairstein manages to balance that better.

The ending was a bit out there. I definitely didn't catch on until all was revealed.

This is the first book in the series. I think Alexandra Cooper is one tough-as-nails woman. She's a sex crimes prosecutor and pulls no punches in the courtroom. Someone is out to get her. Is it a case of mistaken identity? I'm looking forward to reading more about her in the next book.

In the case of "Final Jeopardy", Linda Fairstein’s debut crime thriller, the author attempts to create a tough but sophisticated female SVU prosecuting attorney who juggles an ever increasing caseload as she tries to solve the brutal murder of her actress friend. While this protagonist type promises appeal to reading fans ranging from Patricia Cornwell to John Grisham, Alexandra Cooper proves to be a heroine lacking any qualities that might endear her to such readers.
Sobbing for hours over a friend murdered by a shotgun blast, Alex then dishes on “the bitch” a few pages later. This is one example of the uneven yet elitist characterization she reveals including dropping awkwardly placed f-bombs, attending ballet class, acing tricky crossword puzzles, bragging about designer labels she patronizes, being obsessed with one-upping a colleague engaged in Final Jeopardy question interjections, and bad-mouthing suspects whose syntax offends her English major ear.
In her protagonist’s first person narrative, Fairstein creates insensitive dialogues between Alex and rape victims, even going so far as to racistly create one Shaniqua Simmons who initially refuses to press charges against her boyfriend Nelson.
Although the murder becomes mired among countless suspects, twists, and ongoing cases, the revelation of the murderer offers no surprise-to anyone but Alex. The plot shamelessly drags for 400 pages with useless details. Do readers really need to know that Alex’s desk blotter is red or that she entered her username and password before logging in her computer? Sadly, it seems that the only loser here is the reader who wasted time on this poorly edited unbelievable story.

FINAL JEOPARDY - NR
Fairstein, Linda - 1st in Alex Cooper series

"I sat on my living room sofa at five o'clock in the morning with a copy of the mock-up of the front of the day's New York Post in my hand, looking at my own obituary." Alexandra Cooper, Assistant DA in New York, had lent her retreat in Martha's Vineyard to a Hollywood star. When a woman is found murdered at the wheels of Alex's car in her own driveway, the police assume it is her. When it turns out to be the house guest, a snake pit of possibilities opens up. If Alex was the intended victim the murderer could be any of the rapists and killers she'd successfully prosecuted and who were now on parole, or maybe a suspect from one of her current cases. But if the killer had got the right woman were they an obsessive fan or someone closer to home? Or was the motive entirely unconnected with either of the women's careers?

This was clearly a first book. The best I can say is that I'm glad I bought it in paperback.

Alexander Cooper is Manhattan’s top sex-crimes prosecutor who finds herself a part of a murderous tangled web. A “friend” is murdered while staying at Alex’s home in the Vineyard and everyone at first suspects that Alex was the victim. This book includes unexpected twists and turns that leave the reader guessing. The main character comes across as a little rich girl at times, but she definitely is gutsy and someone to admire. I found the first half of this book slow, perhaps because I did not have the time to sit down and let myself get into it or perhaps it was because the story seemed to take a while to gain momentum. I will definitely look for the second book in the series.

That went quickly. I should have realized that with so few chapters that it was abridged. The library has subsequent book in the series on audio, and this was good enough that I'll read more. I like the main protagonist Alexandra Cooper. It's pretty light, but not a bad mystery.

I first became acquainted with Alexandra Cooper in the book Entombed (book 7) and I found her to be an intriguing character and I loved the story of the book. So, naturally, did I want to get to know her from the start.

In Final Jeopardy is Alex mistaken for a murdered woman. But, the actual victim was Isabella Lascar, a Hollywood film star that was staying at Alex's place at Martha's Vineyard. The question is, was Isabella the target or was she just there at the wrong place and the wrong time and it was Alex that was the real target?

There are several things that appeal to me when it comes to this series, first I like that Alex is a sex crimes prosecutor. I'm so used to reading about cops that a series around a prosecutor is a welcome break. Second, the stories are interesting with fascinating tidbits about New York's history. Fairstein gives the reader the background story of Martha's Vineyard in this book and I love books that manage to add historical tidbits to the story.

The case was interesting, was Alex the real target and is she still in danger? Or was Isabella the killer's target from the beginning? Alex has to with some close police friends try to find pout the truth and I have to say that it was an interesting book to read and the revelation towards the end of the book was, well fascinating.

Final Jeopardy is a good solid book and a great start to the Alexandra Cooper series. I have read three books so far and I quite enjoy them and I'm looking forward to reading more.

At the suggestion of a friend of mine, I decided to give the critically acclaimed author Linda Fairstein a
try and was extremely pleased to be able to find her very first debut novel in my preferred format - audio!

The heroine, Alexandra Cooper is Manhattan’s top sex crimes prosecutor who wakes up one morning to learn some shocking news - the newspapers and news channels were discussing her brutal murder! Naturally, she was far from dead, but knew at once from the reports that the body found was not her but her friend Isabella Lascar, a Hollywood star whom Alex had allowed to stay at her Martha’s Vineyard home. The question facing Alex now was Isabella targeted by a stalker; or was someone out to kill Alex and mistook Isabella for her?

The characterization of Alex and her colleagues were wonderful as well as the background one is exposed to concerning the legal workings of a top ADA prosecutor. I loved the dialogs between Alex and her wisecracking colleague Mike Chapman who is a hoot in some ways to disguise a brilliant investigative mind. There are a plethora of twists and turns to keep the pace rapid and a good amount of interesting secondary characters which add a lot of depth to the mystery.

Bottom line: A terrific thriller and a most enjoyable way to discover a new author whose I hope to read a lot more from.

I couldn't figure out why this book had such a low rating until I started reading through the reviews. I thought Goodreads was for reviewing books, but most of the 1 star reviews on this book are not about the book, but the author. I have to admit I'm pretty disappointed about this. Judging a person's character and morality should be saved for social media platforms such as Twitter and Facebook. Let's use Goodreads for what is was meant for, reviewing books.

Enough about that. Final Jeopardy is an entertaining mystery and kept me guessing to the very end. I enjoyed the banter between Alexandra Cooper and the detectives. Can't wait to read book 2.

Linda Fairstein mined her own experience as a top prosecutor in New York’s Sex Crimes Unit for this debut thriller, starring NYC prosecutor Alexandra Cooper. The book opens with Alex reading her own obituary – a case of mistaken identity when she loaned her vacation home to a Hollywood star.

This is definitely what I look for in this genre. It’s a fast-paced mystery with plenty of suspects, interesting plot twists, a likeable main character, and some complicated relationships. I was kept guessing right along with Alex and the detectives. In the meantime, I became invested in Alex’s personal life and public work. She’s a complex woman, and I like that she doesn’t wait around to be rescued but figures out a way out of her own dilemmas.

I definitely want to read more of this series.

When an actress is murdered while staying at ADA Alex Cooper's country home first reports identify Cooper as the victim. She becomes in the manhunt for the killer while uncovering a multitude of secrets about those close to her. There is a romantic twist for those who enjoy that. The final jeopardy answer is "What is the first book of Fairstein's Alex Cooper series?"

Synopsis: Manhattan's top sex crimes prosecutor opens her newspaper one day to some shocking headlines: Sex Prosecutor Slain - FBI, State Troopers Join Search for Killer. The supposed victim is Assistant D.A. Alexandra Cooper, but Alex is still very much alive. Dead, on the wooded road leading to Alex's summer home on Martha's Vineyard, is beautiful film star Isabella Lascar. Isabella had borrowed Alex's house for a secluded holiday. Now her body has been found without any identification in a car rented in Alex's name, her face disfigured beyond recognition by the shotgun blast that took her life. The local police naturally assumed she was Alex.

There are two possibilities. Somebody despised Isabella enough to trace her to Alex's Vineyard retreat. Or the killer's intended victim was Alex, and Isabella was shot by mistake. If so, the assassin may try again, and the next time Alex may not escape. With longtime friend Mike Chapman from NYPD Homicide as her temporary bodyguard, Alex must probe the Sex Crimes Unit records in the Manhattan Criminal Courts Building, searching the files of closed cases, pending sex offense complaints, and lists of convicts recently paroled. Somebody in one of those records may have hated Alex enough to wish her dead. Isabella, too, had her enemies, including a stalker who wrote letters and made threatening calls. The hunt for the killer goes on, while Alex, with her characteristic intensity and humor, continues the gritty procedures of her daily life - witness and victim interviews, courtroom appearances, serial rape investigations, and late-night precinct meetings with cops and detectives.

This is the first book in the Alexandra Cooper series. I appreicate the fact that this book takes place entirely in and around NYC, including Martha's Vineyard. As a former New Yorker, I like the history lessons that Det Chapman provides as running commentary throughout. Chapman's snarky commentary is pure NYC. The only thing I have a hard time with, is the redundancy of the fact that Coopers parents were beyond wealthy after having created some heart valve. It gets tiring after awhile.

Another part that some may find silly, is when Cooper and Chapman tune in nightly for the Final Jeopardy question, and then bet to see who can answer the question. Ok, so, I used to be a mad follower of Jeopardy, so I appreciate the humor involved.

The writer, Linda Fairstein, served for many years as New York's Assistant District Attorney in charge of prosecuting sex crimes, so she has a first hand look at the crimes in the NY area.

The first 50 pages and the last 50 pages were enjoyable. The whole middle of the book just plodded along. I got really tired of all these asides into previous activities of minor characters. The inner workings of the Sex Crimes Unit of the DAs office was interesting - up to a point. The author was obviously excited to be telling the general public all the intricate details of the workings of the office, but a general overview would have sufficed. There was just lots and lots of "filler" to wade through.

The plot was good and the characters were pretty much OK, but reading through all the filler was boring and tedious. It would have been much better confined to 200 pages instead of the 400 in my edition.

I'm glad I finished it. I started to quit numerous times, but ... I really wanted to know who the perp was and what the motive was. I'm glad I persevered. The ending was interesting and well thought out.

I am stunned to see that anyone could even stomach to read this authors work! I would never rant on this site unless it’s related to a book, but what this woman did was despicable. Her profile claims that she has been protecting women since however long, however if she’d spent her time fighting for the rights of a raped women instead of forcing her prejudiced beliefs onto other people than five children would not have been wrongfully convicted of rape! I have one thing to say to this elitist bitch and that is, I will be buying your book from a second-hand place(so you don’t get money) then I will be burning them and tearing them apart. I hope you feel the injustice that you have forced on other people and am still denying that you did! *Takes a breath* Rant over!

Another one gleaned from Face/Off. Interesting character, and I'm sure I'll read more, but there are some doubts...

While I really enjoy an author who truly knows her subject, there's a fine line between offering keen insight and constantly screaming 'I know more about this than you, pathetic reader.' Ms Fairstein comes pretty close to that line, and I worry that if she keeps this up, it will be well and truly trampled.

Alex is an interesting character, and the mystery decent. I'd like to see her toughen up a bit considering what she does, but let me try again...she's worth a second look.

Hello Alexandra Cooper! Looks like I'll be reading all 16 of these page-turning murder mysteries as fast as I can. A mix between John Grisham, law and order SVU, and the NYT society pages, I couldn't put this first book about power lady NY assistant district attorney and her police force squad hunting down an actress's murderer. Full of fun New York City haunts, it keeps you glued to the page for the romance and the mystery... next please!

A few weeks ago I was planning a road trip, part of the route which was a dead zone for my car radio. Mountains do that. So, since I like to stay awake while driving long distances, I headed to the library to pick up a couple of books on CD. I picked up Mrs. Pollifax on Safari, narrated by Barbara Rosenblat, whom I thoroughly enjoy. It's hard choosing audio books, but I found Final Jeopardy also narrated by Barbara Rosenblat. Since I'm a huge fan of both the TV show Jeopardy and Barbara Rosenblat, I figured this would be a great choice. I was wrong.

When I hit the radio-free zone of the Cascade Mountain Range, I put in the first CD of Final Jeopardy, happy to hear the voice of Rosenblat. The happiness didn't last long. This was not a compelling book at all. I quickly switched over to Mrs. Polifax and happily drove to my destination. Since I finished the book prior to my return trip, I went ahead and tried Jeopardy again. I finally just accepted that this was what I was going to have to listen to and tried to be positive as the miles rolled by. It did help me stay awake, for which I am grateful. However, none of the characters were even likeable, much less relatable, and I kept wondering how Barbara Rosenblat had gotten herself into a situation of having to narrate the book.

Anyway, I won't be reading, or listening to any other Linda Fairstein books. There are too many other good ones to waste my time.

What a fun read this book is! The main character, Alex Cooper, and several of the supporting cast are well described -- I feel like I know and like them. I was surprised that more about their relationships was not resolved at the end, but the book obviously left open many avenues of personal relationships for the series that followed. I can see why this novel remains a perennial favorite among Linda Fairstein fans!
