A must read for any parent of a child with DS. My five year old is reading well thanks to the help and encouragement from this book. It has valuable information on how our children learn as well as games and activities that you are able to copy straight from the book. They have tips for how to get your school to implement these ideas into their programs as well as activities for you to do at home. Since I home-school it was all the more valuable to me.

The author spent years researching and implementing this style all the while being ridiculed by her professors for doing it. From teaching students aged 4 years to 40 years she gives testimony of how reading has changed the lives of people with Down Syndrome. Our children CAN read, they may just have to learn from a different approach.

I must also mention that while at age 4 my daughter was beginning to read well we also found another great benefit from this program. It helped her speech as well. For a girl who would barely speak a 2 word sentence, let alone more, after actually seeing a sentence on paper she was then able to repeat it and learn how to do it. It is great speech therapy for children not speaking well.

This book is a great resource--the book itself is inexpensive because it is geared towards parents, and techniques are presented very clearly.

The books focuses on a sight-word technique, building on a basis of functional sight words. It is designed for readers with Down syndrome, but the techniques here could work with any student who learns best via visuals/sight words. I like the way the book focuses on learning as fun, and incorporates games ideas into each lesson section. Probably designed that way because it is a resource for parents first and foremost, but i like to play whenever i can too, so why not make learning to read game-based?

For teachers who are working with students who are lower, this book has tons of great ways to start the reading process. Lots of work with learning names, family members and very simply vocab. I wish there had been more material for higher functioning students with Down syndrome. I was looking for a way to further get him immersed in text - he's reading an E right now YAY - and really make reading fun. I was hoping for more on creating buy in and minimizing some behaviors that are impacting his reading.

All in all, the text was good - I was just looking for something a little different. The search continues!

This book is helping me get into my little guy's mind. Great ideas on how kids with Down Syndrome learn, and practical application in teaching them reading.
