说起寇尔森（Colson）或许会想起他关于“水门事件”的人生污点，也可能会想起他靠着信仰在监狱兴起的《Prison Fellowship监狱事工》，也会想起他所写下厚厚的《世界观的故事》。但是这本书是关于他的女儿艾米丽·寇尔森（Emilly Colson）以及她的孩子麦克斯Max的故事。之所以有这样的引入是我和书房的同工Jolie老姐妹服事时候闲聊时候聊起的话题。作为家中也有自闭症autism的孩子的家属，她很能理解作者Emily的感受以及困苦。当然，我因为此前的美剧《良医Good Doctor》有相同症状的主角墨菲医生Dr. Shaun Murphy的缘故，对这个症状有了更多的了解和关注。
这本书的中文《围城中的天梯》用一个意象的标题揭示作者的心路历程，在一个无解的家庭处境中，我还怎么活出爱与信实？作者Emily并没有很多的高言大志，而是作为一位离异的单亲母亲，一个养育自闭症儿童的软弱母亲，一点点在生活里陪伴着孩子成长。书中所写的都是生活点滴，却洋溢着的是在平淡话语背后她的坚定的信仰。当妈妈转变眼光投入孩子的视角面对这个世界的时候，“麦克斯是一份礼物”。
